B. Answer these questions.

1. Why was Elizabeth's decision to become a doctor unusual?


Ans- Elizabeth's decision to become a doctor was unusual because there were no female
doctors in the United States at that time.

2. What further challenge lay in front of Elizabeth after becoming a doctor? How did she
counter this?
Ans- Even after becoming a doctor, Elizabeth could not get a job in any of the city hospitals. So
she opened her own hospital- the New York Infirmary for Women and Children. Her hospital
became a relief centre for wounded soldiers during the American Civil War. She also helped
select and train nurses for the war. She established a medical school for women and later in
1868, she opened the Woman's Medical College in America.

3. What were Emmeline Pankhurst's observations about women during her times?
Ans- Emmeline Pankhurst observed the inferior position of women in society and their legal and
social oppression by men during her times.

4. Why was the year 1918 of significance to the WSPU in particular?


Ans- In 1918, the British government passed a law that gave women over the age of thirty the
right to vote, which was a significant achievement for Emmeline and the WSPU.

5. Do you think Emmeline was right in calling off the suffrage movement during the war
years? Give a reason for your answer.
Ans- Yes, Emmeline was right in calling off the suffrage movement during the war years
because that enabled her to support the country's war efforts. She visited the United States,
Canada and Russia to encourage women to be a part of the industrial workforce.

6. What prompted Amelia Earhart to become an aviator?


Ans- Amelia Earhart enjoyed watching the aeroplane stunt shows that were quite popular during
the 1920s. One day, after taking a ten-minute plane ride, she decided that she had to learn to fly
and become an aviator.
7. Why were the years 1928 and 1932 of significance to Amelia?
Ans- In 1928, she flew from America to England with the pilots Wilmer Stultz and Louis Gordon,
thus making her the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1932, she added to this distinction by becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.

8. Why was being the best student in her class of special importance for Elizabeth?
Ans- Being the best student in her class was of special importance for Elizabeth because she
was the only woman in a class of one hundred and fifty students who made things difficult for
her. They criticized her, refused to talk to her and kept her from taking part in the classroom
medical demonstrations. Despite all this, she graduated at the head of her class two years later.
