OPTICAL FIBRE CABLES –

Part 2-51: Indoor cables –

Detail specification for simplex and duplex cables
for use in cords for controlled environment

1 Scope
This part of IEC 60794 is a detail specification. It gives detailed requirements for cables to be
used in cords which are intended for use in a category C environment, according to
IEC 61753-1. They are characterized with temperature range between –10 °C and +60 °C.

The fibre requirements for this specification are defined in IEC 60793-2-10 for multimode
fibres and IEC 60793-2-50 for single-mode fibres.

Some deviation to family specification IEC 60794-2-50 requirements is allowed in certain

clauses of this specification.

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

3.1
reinforced cable
cables containing one or two buffered fibres with further protection provided by non metallic
strength members and surrounded by a sheath of suitable material
BS EN 60794-2-51:2014
–6– IEC 60794-2-51:2014 © IEC 2014

3.2
cord

“terminated cable assembly”

4 General requirements
The cable shall meet the requirements of IEC 60794-2-50.

The optical fibre contained in the cable shall meet the requirements of one of the following,
along with the normative requirements defined within them:

– IEC 60793-2-50:2012, Annex A (single-mode B1.1 fibre)

– IEC 60793-2-50:2012, Annex C (single-mode B1.3 fibre)
– IEC 60793-2-50:2012, Annex G (single-mode B6 fibre)
– IEC 60793-2-10:2011, Annex A (multimode A1a, 50 µm core fibre)
– IEC 60793-2-10:2011, Annex B (multimode A1b, 62,5 µm core fibre)
Attenuation measurements shall be made at the most critical wavelength agreed between the
customer and supplier.

5 Particular requirements
NOTE The requirements in this standard either define a specific option relative to the requirements of IEC 60794-
2-50 or define additional requirements.
5.1 Wavelength
The measuring wavelength for multimode cabled fibres is either 850 nm or 1 300 nm and shall
be agreed between the customer and supplier.

The measuring wavelength for single-mode cabled fibres is either 1 310 nm or 1 550 nm or
1 625 nm and shall be agreed between the customer and suppiler.

5.2 No change in attenuation

There shall be no change in attenuation for cabled multimode and single-mode fibres
according to IEC 60794-1-1 (see Table 1).

Table 1 – No change in attenuation

Fibre type Singlemode Multimode

dB dB
No change in attenuation after the test ± 0,05 ± 0,2

5.3 Buffer strippability

The strippability requirement is defined according to the buffer type in the cable and
requirements for terminating procedure.

Cords terminated at each end and using semi tight or loose buffer as secondary coating are
also defined in this specification. These products may be cut and used for splicing requiring
appropriate stripping.

For tight buffer type, the buffer and primary coating are stripped off together to the optical
fibre glass surface.

For semi-tight and loose buffer, the buffer material is stripped off for a specified length leaving
the primary coating of the fibre intact. Table 2 outlines the strippability requirements.

5.8 Fire performance

IEC TR 62222 provides guidance and recommendations for the requirements and test
methods for the fire performance of communication cables when installed in buildings. The
recommendations relate to typical applications and installation practices, and an assessment
of the fire hazards presented. Account is also taken of applicable legislation and regulation.

IEC TR 62222 references several IEC fire performance test methods and also other test
methods that may be required by local or national legislation and regulation. The tests to be
applied, and the requirements, shall be agreed between the customer and supplier, taking into
account the fire hazard presented by the end use application of the terminated cable
assembly in which the cable is intended to be used.
