POSITION SUMMARY
The Dispatch Manager supervises the daily activities and operations in the security support/communications center
within the Office of Safety and Security Atlanta Public Schools Police Department (APSPD). Responsibilities include
overseeing the preparation of shift schedules, monitoring calls, evaluating, recommending, and coordinating
certification/recertification training, and supervising staff.
**NOTE – This position requires the incumbent to work nights and/or weekends and holidays as necessary.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
• High School Diploma or GED required.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
• The following are to be obtained/completed within the first six (6) months of employment: Valid State of Georgia
Driver's License or proof of mobility equivalent.
• Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Certification.
• Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Dispatch Certification.
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.

WORK EXPERIENCE:
• 5 years of public safety dispatch and/or 911 emergency communications experience.
• 3 years lead or supervisory experience preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience
sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES


• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision.
• Knowledge of office practices (including customer services) and procedures.
• Knowledgeable in laws, rules, and regulations governing emergency communications.
• Knowledge of City of Atlanta geography. Knowledge of police, fire, and emergency medical codes, terminology, and
service priorities.
• Knowledge of rules and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in operating radio and
teletype equipment.
• Knowledge of methods and techniques used in receiving and transmitting messages accurately and calmly in
emergency situations by radio, telephone, and teletype equipment.
• Knowledge of methods and techniques used in operating state-of-the-art communications equipment and systems
such as radio consoles, computer terminals, deaf assistance phones, and other alarm systems.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
• Skilled in supervising staff, organizing, and prioritizing work.
• Skilled in using a computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) terminal. Skilled in Interpreting and enforcing rules, regulations,
policies, and procedures.
• Skilled at receiving and transmitting messages accurately using radio or telephone equipment.
• Able to monitor the receipt, transmission, and accuracy of messages processed using state-of-the-art emergency
communications equipment and systems.
• Able to make decisions in emergency or high-risk situations.
• Able to resolve problems and making decisions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Supervises the daily activities and operations within the Dispatch Center of the Office of Safety and Security.
• Supervises assigned staff, including establishing workloads, prioritizing work assignments, evaluating employee
performance, interpreting and enforcing policies and procedures, resolving staff issues, making hiring or termination
decisions/recommendations, and administering disciplinary action as required.
• Evaluates, recommends, and coordinates required certification/recertification training for staff on an assigned shift
as needed.
• Oversees the preparation of shift schedules and makes recommendations for schedule adjustments during staff
shortages.
• Prepares, reviews, and compiles statistical reports and operational data for dispatch center to ensure compliance
with performance measurements and develops recommendations for employee recognition and/or corrective action.
• Assists staff with emergency/non-emergency and high priority calls as needed, investigates citizens’ complaints, and
makes recommendations for resolution.
• Coordinates and evaluates the timely receipt, dispatch, and completion of emergency aid requests.
• Supervises the collection and storage of emergency communications dispatch records.
• Ensures compliance with Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and
Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) National Crime Information Center (NCIC) policy and laws as it pertains to
training and certifications.
• Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person during regular
business hours and as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate administrator or their representative.

Incumbent may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict.
Environmental Requirements: Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work
independently; work indoors.
Mental Requirements: Ability to read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level
essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to
process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks
in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records. Understand how to manage
stress.
