301-230th Street, Coldwater Reserve Charlie Slater, born 1904 As a young man, Charlie was a skinner in the mine. Skin-
ners were responsible for the horses or mules, which pulled the cars that took coal
to the tipple outside, for dumping into the tipple. Charlie was lucky, as his was not a
dirty job. It was the miners who ended up being filthy. As Charlie explained, "They
were right there in the hole, right in the dust. That was where they fired the shots,
powder shots in the coal dunes."
MISSION STATEMENT When Charlie worked in the mine, picks, shovels, mules and horses were used
To enhance and sustain our quality of life through wellness and for equipment. Charlie recalled "They used mules and horses for the hoist work on
culture, and to utilize and preserve all our resources for now and
future generations. the slopes. The mules were used when miners had to haul coal from the inside of the
mine. The coal was hoisted out from the bottom of the slopes to the top."
Sigurd Teit, born 1915 "…the next job I had was at Middlesboro Collieries, on a
crew of from 5-8 men referred to as the "Bush Gang". This crew worked year round
cutting mine props for the coal mine. Most of the cutting, using whatever trees were
available, was done along the Coldwater River and on Coal Hill back of the mine… I
