About This Guide

Scope and The Cyclone®Kiube is a radioisotope delivery system comprising the accelerator
(cyclotron) and a choice of targets.
Contents
The Cyclone®Kiube cyclotron produces and accelerates negative ions that are stripped of
their electrons by passing through a carbon foil (stripper) before hitting the target. This
method of extraction is nearly 100 % efficient and minimizes the activation of internal
cyclotron parts so that maintenance can be carried out shortly after system shutdown. The
Cyclone®Kiube can accommodate two proton sources. Particles accelerated can be
extracted at eight beam exit ports where targets are installed.
Nirta® Liquid for the production of 18F- is the most widely used target for the
Cyclone®Kiube and therefore the description of the 18F- target is included in the
description of the Cyclone®Kiube. However, a range of other targets are also available as
options: Nirta® Liquid targets for the production of 13NH3 and 68Ga; and Nirta® Gas
targets for the production of 15O, 11CO2, 11CH4.1, 2
Utility systems are mounted on the cyclotron, or in free standing cabinets in the power
supply or technical rooms.
The Zephiros® control system, with an application server providing the user interface with
the industrial programmable logic controller (PLC) that handles the control logic,
integrates all control and interlock functions including those for additional options that are
part of your Cyclone®Kiube configuration.
The Cyclone®Kiube range includes the following models:

This guide describes functions for the Production Mode. Production Mode allows
operating the Cyclone®Kiube from a Recipe set up by the Supervisor (Administration
Mode). Members of the Regular Operator group can only use the Quick Start Production
whereas members of the Advanced Operator group can run the Manual Start Production
and can change some parameters of the recipe. Both groups are also able to
acknowledge alarms. Members of the Maintenance Technician group and Supervisor
groups also have access to both Production Mode options. Production Mode is
available on liquid targets only.

1. Optional Nirta® Liquid and Gas targets are covered in separate dedicated manu-
als.
2. Nirta® Solid is also compatible with the Cyclone® Kiube and also covered in a sep-
arate dedicated manual.

4. About Recipes

In this chapter:

 Overview
 Recipe Parameters

| MID 67061 revB | Feb-2019 4-1

About Recipes

Overview A Recipe is a set of parameters preset by a member of the Supervisor group to be used
in Production Mode. Members of the Regular Operator group can only select a recipe as
it is for the Quick Start Production, members of the Advanced Operator group can in
addition run the so-called Manual Start Production whereby they can make some changes
to the Recipe.
Recipes can only be set up for Liquid target productions.

Recipe Recipes include two types of parameters:

Parameters  Common Parameters are general settings for running the production.
 Side 1(and 2) Parameters allow setting specific target process options.

Common
Parameters
Table 4-1: Recipe Common Parameters Available to Authorized Users in Production Mode

Full Auto: is the mode the control system takes all steps to
perform the production without message to the operator
except alarms. When not selected, the operator will have con-
firm some steps, for example, if the target is already filled, the
operator will be given the choice to use the filled target, to refill
the target or cancel the production. Click the box to select Full
Auto.

Pre-heating: if selected, this option allows setting a warm-up

delay during the which the cyclotron can operating tempera-
ture with the magnet and RF systems started thus ensuring a
greater stability of the main coil regulation loop.

Beam stop type: there are two options, automatic whereby

the system will stop the beam automatically according to
selected stop mode or, manual whereby, the operator will stop
the beam by means of a button on the production monitoring
screen.

Stop Mode provides three options for the automatic beam

stop:
 On a set duration
 On a set integrated beam current on target
 On expected activity
According to the choice made here, the value is set on the
Side Parameters of the recipe (see Table 4-2 on page 4-3)

Unload Priority is used for dual beam production to set which

target is to be unloaded first. The Control system ignores this

Note: Only liquid targets are available for Production
Mode.
Note: Exit port, Requested Current and upper maxi-
mum pressure are shown here but are not part of the
recipe, these are target parameters not accessible in
Production modes.

Rinse before load provides the following choices:

 No rinse
 Rinse with load syringe
 Rinse with rinse syringe (if this device is present
on your liquid target configuration, see page 3-3)

(helium) Purge before load enable to choose Purge or

No Purge and if purge is chosen to set its timer.

Rinse/purge before load destination allows - if a tar-

get output switching device is present in your system -
to select the destinationa. If no switching device is
present in your system, the destination is as configured
in your system setup (Administration and/or IBA mode
only).

Beam: if the beam stop mode selected in the common

parameters of the recipe (see Table 4-1 on page 4-2,
the End value (automatic) is where you enter the
required time, integrated current or activity according to
the option chosen in the common parameters.
Note: Load volume is not a recipe parameter but a tar-
get parameter not accessible in Production modes.

Unload activity allows for the automatic transfer of

activity at End of beam or not.
If not selected, the production will end at the end of the
irradiation, the target remaining full.
If selected, and your system includes a target output
switching device, the authorized operator can choose
the destinationa. where the activity is to be unloaded.
The transfer time can also be adjusted.

Rinse after unload is only available when Unload

activity at end of beam is selected. Here as for Rinse
before load, authorized operators can choose which
syringe (if load and rinse syringes are present), the vol-
ume of liquid, the destinationa. (if target output switch-
ing is present, and set timer for the target rinse process
or alternatively choose No rinse.

Purge after unload, is only available when Unload

activity at end of beam is selected. Here as for Purge
before load, authorized operators can choose the desti-
nation (if target output switching is present), or set
timer for this target purge.

In this chapter:

 Interlocks
 System Alarms

| MID 67061 revB 0| Feb-2019 8-1

Interlocks and Alarms

Interlocks Interlocks are categorized in four types:

 Building safety interlocks
 Subsystem Interlocks
 External interlocks
 Internal interlocks
Building safety interlocks are part of the signals exchanged between the Cyclone® Kiube
control system and the Customer’s safety system. These signals are site dependent1 but
will include at least, the following:
Table 8-1: Typical Exchanges Between ACS and User Systems

User‘s systems ACS

No Emergency Break Can start the magnet system.

transfer)

Safety interlocks are shown on the BUILDING SAFETY SCREEN:

Fig.8-1: Example of BUILDING SAFETY SCREEN

Subsystem interlocks are subsystems required to be operating before a system or device
is allowed to turn on.
External interlock are general conditions required before a system or device can be turned
on.
Internal interlocks are those built in the device or the system (power supplies interlock
devices for example).

1. Refers to the Interface Control Document (ICD) for complete set of exchanged sig-
nals on your site.

8-2
Cyclone®Kiube
Production Guide

Interlocks are listed in panels on each control screen (Fig. shows the ION SOURCE SYSTEM
control screen for example), listing the conditions required for operation. Conditions met
are indicated with a green tick mark (), conditions not met are shown with a red cross
( ).

| MID 67061 revB 0| Feb-2019 8-3

Interlocks and Alarms

System Alarms System alarms are abnormal conditions detected by the control system, some may be
blocking, some are just displayed to alert the user to the situation. Blocking alarms will
prevent a system, process or device to operate. A warning symbol in the interlock panel
of the system, process or device is shown when this is the case.
Alarms are recorded and displayed on the ALARMS screen.

Viewing Alarms This screen has two views; Real-time and Historical. You can switch view by clicking the
chosen display from the TYPE Panel on the left of the screen.

Alarms are listed in rows and use the following color convention:
ACK (blue): alarms that have been reset.
RTN (green): returned to normal.
UNACK (red): alarms not reset.
Together with a description of the alarm, the date and time of occurrence.
