Story:
In the vibrant tapestry of folklore and legend, there exists an enthralling tale that weaves
together the realms of the ethereal and the terrestrial. It is a story whispered through generations,
a tapestry of mystery and wonder that has captured the imaginations of those who dare to venture
into the realm of the extraordinary. Behold, the chronicle of the "Golden Ghost Ship: The
Enigmatic Boat of Maria Cacao” as seen in Iligan City. Edgar R. Eslit

1
Deep within the haunted Mandulog River, a chilling legend of Maria Cacao unfolded,
casting a veil of fear over the place. It was whispered among the inhabitants, carried on the wind,
that every century, Maria Cacao would emerge from the depths of darkness, bringing with her a
massive gothic boat that harbored both terror and salvation.
In the dead of night, on December 17, 2011, a catastrophic deluge engulfed Iligan City,
unleashing its wrath upon the unsuspecting residents. As torrential rain battered the streets,
transforming them into treacherous rivers, a sense of dread filled the air. Amongst the chaos, the
people of San Roque, Barinaut, Bayug, and the rest of the smaller barangays near the Mandulog
river on the outskirts of the city, found themselves battling the relentless forces of nature.
As the floodwaters rose, swallowing their homes and hopes, the cries for help pierced the
darkness. The survivors clung desperately to rooftops, their faces etched with fear and desperation.
It was in this harrowing moment that the ghostly boat of Maria Cacao emerged from the murky
waters, sailing ominously through the night.
The colossal vessel, draped in darkness and cloaked in mystery, cast an eerie glow upon the deluge
below. Its sheer size commanded both awe and terror. The survivors of Bayug, peering through
the rain-soaked night, witnessed the enigmatic boat as it drifted past, a haunting reminder of the
choices they would make. Edgar R. Eslit
Shivering from the cold and the weight of their decisions, the people of Bayug exchanged
anxious glances. One woman, her voice trembling with uncertainty, whispered, "Should we seek
refuge in that boat? Is it our salvation or a gateway to something far more sinister?"
A man, his voice filled with caution, replied, "Remember the tales of Maria Cacao, the
warnings passed down through generations. To step foot on that vessel is to risk our souls, to
surrender to the unknown horrors that may lie within."
As they watched the boat drift farther into the night, the survivors hesitated, torn between
the hope of safety and the fear of the unknown. Yet, in the depths of their hearts, they clung to the
tales of their ancestors, their cautious nature guiding their decisions.
The hours ticked by, the storm raged on, and the boat of Maria Cacao faded into the
distance, leaving the people of Bayug to face their fate without her enigmatic embrace. In the
aftermath, as the floodwaters receded and the community began to rebuild, conversations echoed
through the weary streets. Amongst the survivors, there emerged a tale of miraculous intervention
that spoke of hope amidst the despair.
In the midst of the chaos, when it seemed all was lost, the image of St. Michael the
Archangel appeared to the weary residents of Bayug. With a mighty swing of his sword, he severed
the bridge that spanned the Mandulog River, the very bridge that had become a barrier, trapping
logs and debris, exacerbating the destruction wrought by the deluge.
As the bridge collapsed into the raging waters, a sudden release occurred. The logs, once
trapped and threatening to cause further devastation, were set free, flowing with the force of the

2
current down the Mandulog River. The trapped debris dislodged and began to clear, creating a path
for the floodwaters to recede more swiftly.
The people of Bayug, witnessing this miraculous act, found solace in the divine intervention that
had come to their aid. They spoke of the image of St. Michael the Archangel, his sword raised
high, cutting through the obstacle that had held them captive. They believed it was a sign that they
were not alone, that in their darkest hour, there was a force working to deliver them from the
clutches of destruction. Edgar R. Eslit
As the conversations echoed through the weary streets, a renewed sense of hope washed
over the survivors. They drew strength from the image of St. Michael, finding resilience in the
belief that they had been granted a second chance to rebuild their lives.
In the days and weeks that followed, the community of Bayug rallied together, united in their
gratitude and determination. They cleared the debris, repaired the damage, and supported one
another in the process of rebuilding. The image of St. Michael the Archangel became a symbol of
their collective resilience and a reminder that even in the face of overwhelming adversity, there is
always the possibility of divine intervention and renewal. Edgar R. Eslit
And so, as the community of Bayug rose from the ruins, they carried with them the memory
of the boat of Maria Cacao, fading into the distance, and the image of St. Michael the Archangel,
a beacon of hope that guided them towards a future filled with strength and resilience.
A woman, her voice tinged with regret, whispered, "Did we make the right choice? Could
that boat have led us to a chance at survival amidst the chaos?"
An elder, his face lined with wisdom, responded, "The legends warned us of the dangers
that accompany the boat of Maria Cacao. We followed the path our ancestors laid before us, guided
by their wisdom. We must trust that their caution was born from experience."
As the survivors sought solace in their shared experiences, they carried with them the
weight of immense loss and grief. The memory of more than 100 people who perished in the
devastating deluge lingered heavily in their hearts. Each name and face became etched in their
minds, a poignant reminder of the fragility of life.
In the wake of the tragedy, the survivors found solace in coming together, united by their
shared grief. They formed a close-knit community, bound by the memories of their loved ones and
the strength that they drew from one another. Conversations and stories echoed through the weary
streets as they recounted the lives and spirits of those who were lost. “Were they taken away by
Maria Cacao?” One old woman resident chided. Nobody knows the answer.
They celebrated the lives lived and the impact each individual had made, cherishing the
memories of their laughter, their kindness, and their unwavering spirit. They vowed to honor the
memory of that fateful night, ensuring that the stories of their loved ones would endure.
The survivors understood that their journey toward healing would be long and arduous.
They faced the uncertainties of the future with resilience and hope, drawing strength from the

3
bonds they forged in their shared grief. They pledged to support one another, to provide comfort
and understanding, knowing that their unity was a source of strength and healing.
Through their collective efforts, they embarked on a mission to create a legacy of
remembrance. They organized memorial services, erected monuments, and established community
initiatives in honor of those who had been lost. They sought to keep their memories alive, ensuring
that the impact of their lives would not be forgotten.
As the community of survivors moved forward, they carried the memories of their loved
ones as a guiding light. Their shared experiences became a powerful force, reminding them of the
resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of unity in the face of tragedy.
And so, as they navigated the uncertainties of the future, the survivors remained bound
together by the memories of those who perished. Their journey towards healing was a testament
to the strength of their unity and the unwavering power of remembrance.
The legend of the boat of Maria Cacao, witnessed but unexplored by the people of Iligan
on that chilling December night, would forever remain a reminder of the delicate balance between
caution and opportunity. The survivors, as they rebuilt their lives, carried with them the knowledge
that sometimes, the greatest challenges lie not in facing the known darkness, but in bravely
venturing into the mysterious unknown, guided by the stories and lessons of the past.
