Simplifying a ratio helps you find an equivalent ratio. To simplify a ratio, divide both
numbers in a ratio by their greatest common factor, or GCF.
Since the GCF of 6 and 8 is 2, divide both numbers by 2. So, 6:8 = 3:4 and 8:6 = 4:3.
CHALLENGE ! Can you simplify the ratio above? Why or why not?

First, find the greatest common factor (GCF) of 40 and 16. The GCF is 8. Then, you can rewrite the
expression as a product using the distributive property.
40 + 16 = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2)
= 8(5 + 2)
Write the GCF. Then factor using the distributive property. Check your answer by applying the
distributive property.
