Blur
At an internment camp in Indonesia, forty-seven people are pronounced dead with acute hemorrhagic fever.
When Henry Parsons--microbiologist, epidemiologist--travels there on behalf of the World Health
Organization to investigate, what he finds will soon have staggering repercussions across the globe: an
infected man is on his way to join the millions of worshippers in the annual Hajj to Mecca. Now, Henry
joins forces with a Saudi prince and doctor in an attempt to quarantine the entire host of pilgrims in the holy
city . . . A Russian émigré, a woman who has risen to deputy director of U.S. Homeland Security, scrambles
to mount a response to what may be an act of biowarfare . . . Already-fraying global relations begin to snap,
one by one, in the face of a pandemic . . . Henry's wife, Jill, and their children face diminishing odds of
survival in Atlanta . . .
And the disease slashes across the United States, dismantling institutions--scientific, religious,
governmental--and decimating the population. As packed with suspense as it is with the fascinating history
of viral diseases, Lawrence Wright has given us a full-tilt, electrifying, one-of-a- kind thriller.

Synopsis
A WHO microbiologist called Henry Parsons was investigating a new unidentified fever that had killed 47 people
when he visited a gay community camp in Indonesia. Unaware that he had done so, Parsons infected his driver,
Bambang Idris, and the infection spread quickly after Bambang went on a pilgrimage to Mecca without showing
any signs of illness. Parsons requested that the Holy City be placed under quarantine by the Saudi authorities. A
new pandemic danger has also pushed the topic of international relations, with Iran, the US, and Russia starting
proxy warfare. In an effort to “buy time,” researchers are searching for a vaccine before the pandemic hits the
United States.

Health professionals are alerting authorities that social order will be in danger because this outbreak is not a
regular cold. The state must shut down its borders, postpone activities, close its schools, and remove patients who
don’t require medical attention. Although social exclusion was used, very few people died as a result. In an effort
to boost the economy, politicians are beginning to relax regulations, and analysts anticipate a wave of diseases by
the end of next October.
