MODELLING (PACKAGING)

NOTES ON PACKAGING
Participants must address the following when dealing with packaging:
• What aspects of packaging
are important
• What shape is packed
What shape is packed into?
• How is it packed?

Optimal use of space

Cost efficiency
Packaging method 1
Length-wise: The LENGTH of the small box is packed along the LENGTH of the
LARGE CONTAINER/BOX
Calculation : the number of small boxes that can be packed along length =
length (ℓ) of large container/ box ÷ length (ℓ1) of small box
2

ACTIVITY 1
The shoe boxes in which the shoes will be packed have
the following dimensions. Length = 27,5 cm;
Breadth = 15 cm and
Height = 11,9 cm

Refer to the above information and diagrams to answer the questions that follow.
1.1. Calculate the volume of the shoe box. (3)

You may use the formula: Volume = length

× breadth × height
The shoes are packed on shelves. The
height between the shelves is 118 cm
and length of the shelf is 248 cm.

1.2 The packers argue that if they use the length of the shoe box to pack in the (7) shelf, they
will be able to pack more shoe boxes than using the breadth of the box. Verify, using
calculations, whether their argument is valid.

ACTIVITY 2
2.1 Petru buys rectangular boxes with reels of thread for stitching the stockings.
The radius of a cylindrical reel is 11,5 mm.

Refer to the information and diagrams above to answer the question which
follow.
3

2.1.1 Determine the maximum number of reels of thread that will fit exactly into a (5)
rectangular box that is 120 mm wide and 195 mm long. Show ALL calculations.

ACTIVITY 3

3.1 Franz uses rectangular boxes to pack the oranges as shown in the diagram below.
He then packs the boxes of oranges into the rectangular trailer of his truck for
delivery. The boxes can be arranged in the trailer in two possible ways with the
top of the box always facing upwards as shown in the two options below:
Length = 0,3 m; breadth = 0,125 m and height = 0,235

Details of TWO below OPTIONS:

Length = 394 inches; breadth = 119 inches; height = 94,5 inches NOTE:
1 inch = 2,54 cm

Refer to the above information and diagrams to answer the questions that follow.
3.1.1 Show, with calculations, which ONE of the two options (Option 1 or 2) you
would advise Franz to use so that he can pack the maximum number of
boxes on the floor of the trailer.

ACTIVITY 4
A certified gas dealer sells 9 kg gas bottles. These cylindrical bottles are stored
outside the shop in a steel cage, as shown below. There is a gap of 10 mm on
either side of each gas bottle when placed on the shelf in the steel cage.

Refer to the information and diagrams above to answer the questions that follow.
4.1 Calculate the maximum number of gas bottles that can into ONE steel cage. (2)
4.2 A company sells rectangular metal sheets with dimensions 3, 4 m by 1, 2 m. (8)
Determine, showing ALL calculations, the maximum number of shelves for the steel
cage that could be cut from ONE metal sheet.

ACTIVITY 5
5.1 5 litre paint tins are packed in shops for delivery in big rectangular boxes. An example
of these boxes are shown below. The diagrams are not drawn to scale.

5.1.1 The packers argue that if they use Box A for packaging the paint tins,
PPPP they will be able to pack more than two times the paint tins in Box B.
Use calculations to prove if their argument is valid or not. (6)

5.1.2 A truck carrying 20 boxes of Box B with 5 litre paint tins has an accident
and all the paint is spilt. How much in Rand will be lost? (5)
