LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 9

CONTENT STANDARD: The learner demonstrates understanding of basic concepts of

trigonometry.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learner is able to apply the concepts of trigonometric ratios to
formulate and solve real-life problems with precision and
accuracy.

LEARNING COMPETENCY: Illustrates the six trigonometric ratios: sine, cosine, tangent,
secant, cosecant and cotangent. (M9GE-Iva-1).

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
a) illustrate the six trigonometric ratios: sine, cosine, tangent,
secant, cosecant and cotangent;
b) find the value of the six trigonometric ratios from the given
triangle; and
c) appreciate the importance of trigonometry in real-life situations.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
a) Topic: Illustrates the six trigonometric ratios.
b) Learning Resources
1. Grade 9 LM Mod 7 Triangle Trigonometry.pdf page 4-14

B. REVIEWING Previous topic: Solves problems that involve triangle similarity and right
PREVIOUS LESSON triangles.

C. ESTABLISHING A Have you ever wondered how towers and buildings were constructed?
PURPOSE FOR THE How do you determine the distance traveled as well as the height of an
LESSON airplane as it takes off? What about determining the height of a
mountain? We can do all these things even if we are not in the real
place or situation. These are just some of many real-world applications
of triangle trigonometry.

D. DISCUSSING NEW In a right triangle, we can define actually six trigonometric ratios.
CONCEPTS AND Consider the right triangle ABC below. In this triangle we let ϴ
PRACTICING NEW represent - ∠ B . Then the leg denoted by a is the adjacent to ϴ, and
SKILLS #1 the leg denoted by b is the opposite to ϴ.

We will use the convention that angles are symbolized by capital

letters, while the side opposite each angle will carry the same letter
symbol, in lowercase.

opposite hypotenuse
Sin of ϴ = sin ϴ = cosecant of ϴ = csc ϴ =
hypotenuse opposite

adjacent hypotenuse
Cosine of ϴ = cos ϴ = secant of ϴ = sec ϴ =

Tangent of ϴ - tan ϴ = cotangent of ϴ = cot ϴ =

SOH – CAH- TOA is a mnemonic used for remembering the equations.

Notice that the three new ratios at the right are reciprocals of the
ratios on the left. Applying algebra shows the connection between
these functions.
