20 youth participated in our Connect Campout Sept. 24-25th. The purpose was to help us form closer bonds in our group. I was also hopeful that as we grow to know each other better, we would grow in our knowledge and understanding of our Creator. Camping always provides an opportunity for bonding. How many times have we heard the expression that there is no better way to feel closer to God than to sleep under the stars? We left Saturday morning, intending to take the scenic route, and stop wherever we wanted along the way to take pictures. One stop was in Hominy at a thrift sale, where several youth made unique purchases. We needed to be in Dewey, Oklahoma by 3:00pm for the Wild West Days parade. Fortunately, we made it in time for the youth to explore some of the antique shops. Natalie Fieldsend and Audrey Memmott spent time trying on vintage clothing. Gage Baker, Sydney Goad and Matt Arrington found all kinds of cool stuff, including a police light that plugged into a car, which they thought would be the perfect way to signal Rick when it was time for a stop. After the parade, the entire group stopped into an old fashioned soda shop for ice cream and sodas. A couple of youth even purchased cherry phosphates and were kind enough to share. We camped out on my brothers ranch in Chatauqua, Kansas. After setting up our tent city, we cooked out, and explored. We also visited a haunted house for a ghost story after dark. Sunday morning started off with breakfast cooked over the campfire. We then traveled to Prairie Song, a replication of a prairie town built by one man. (You honestly have to see it to believe it, and everyone should go and check it out). There, we visited an old-time school house, school marms home, prairie home, blacksmith shop, saloon, jail, barn/tool shed, witnessed a bank robbery and more! Several of the youth were put into jail by Roster Cogburn. Then we headed to Jonesburg for church, which meets at 2:30pm on Sunday afternoon, with some very special people. We more than quadrupled the average attendance, and they were thrilled to worship with young people! They made us feel so welcomed and appreciated. Hopefully they know how much life and vitality we see in their tiny but powerful worship services. They were thrilled when, during special music, Caroline Harrist and Aaron Sharp volunteered to sing a duet. I regret, once again, having to leave out a lot of the really cool stuff, because there is not enough room here to share. This congregation is extremely blessed to have an amazing group of young people as a part of our body of Christ. I have worked with them now for nearly ten years and on every trip, I am amazed by EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM. Sometimes I look up at the stars at night and think of the scripture that says God knows them each by name, and I think how is that possible? This weekend, spending time with some of His most amazing creations, I got a glimpse. If God is revealed in His creation, He must be beyond description. I know for a fact that He, who designed and knit together the bunch of youth involved at FCC, did one incredible job.
