Discussion
Talk with your
partners. What do
you think a topic
sentence is? What’s
the purpose of a
topic sentence?
Read the following
paragraph. What is it
about?
It’s important to consume healthy food with a lot of
nutrients. For example, I drink a green smoothie for
breakfast and eat a kale salad with brown rice and
chicken for lunch. I can feel my body growing stronger
with these healthy meals. You should also wake up early
and do cardio exercise in the morning. For example, I
wake up at 5 AM and run for 30 minutes and then ride
my bike for 2 hours. Although exercise is important, you
can’t forget your mind. You have to believe in yourself if
you want to achieve this goal. Tell yourself that you can
do it, and you will.

The importance of Topic Sentences
Topic sentences are important
because they keep your reader from
feeling lost or confused. You don’t
