DESIGN
Unit Title: DC MACHINES

CO / Lesson No (GO): 2/2

1. Prerequisite(s):
Armature reaction, Armature mmf, Flux distribution in armature, Slots, conductors
2. Topic:
Guiding factors for pole design
3. General Objective (GO):
To apply suitable number of poles and slots to design the armature in dc machines

4. Specific Objectives (SO):

 SO1 – Indicate the guiding factors for selection of number of poles in a Dc machine
(U/C)
 SO2 - Interpret the factors to be considered for choice of average gap density and
ampere conductors per metre (U/C).
 SO3 – Represent the guiding factors for choice of number of poles in DC machine
(U/C).

6. Mind map and Summary:

7. Summary:

Guiding factors for selecting number of poles

i) The frequency of flux reversals in the armature core generally lies between 25
to 50 Hz.
ii) Lower values of frequencies are used for large machines.
iii) The value of current per parallel path is limited to about 200 Amps. Thus the
current per brush arm should not be more than 400 Amps.
iv) Armature mmf should not be excessively large.
Armature winding:
1. In a distributed winding (used to overcome the disadvantages of the concentrated
winding), conductors / pole is distributed in more number of slots.
2. The distributed winding can be classified as single layer winding and double layer
winding.
3. Double layer windings are much used in DC machines.
