Critical Thinking Questions:

1. What was the movie Gung Ho about? What have you learned about leadership and management from
this movie?
The movie Gung Ho is about the takeover of an American car plant by a Japanese corporation named
“Assan Motors”. Also, it is about principles, methods, and leadership styles in business. What I have
learned from the movie were, leaders should have a strong and honest personality. Furthermore, leaders
should be aware that integrity and honesty are at the foundation of exceptional leadership. They should
set goals which are challenging but of course it needs to be realistic to boost someone’s motivation.
Moreover, I have learned that being able to compromise and understand your colleagues are vital to the
business’ success. Lastly, proper teamwork is needed. We should have collaborative mindset for the
business’ long-lasting success.

2. What was the atmosphere like in the town where the production plant was located (Hadleyville) prior to
the Japanese takeover?
The atmosphere was like a dull place because of closing of the auto factory, everybody owed their living
one way or another to the auto factory. They work hard and then in 35 years operations the factory was
being closed for nine months that’s why people are starting to move out of the town.

3. What was the atmosphere like immediately following Assan Motors buying the plant (before actually
starting production)?
The environment become so festive. They even have a welcoming party to the Japanese. They welcome
them happily, they also prepared red carpet for the Japanese people. Like their dreams were answered
by the Japanese takeover of the auto factory.

4. What was the atmosphere like once Assan Motors was operating the plant?
Everybody was busy when the Assan Motors was started operations by the Japanese takeover. Planning
everything, each and everyone has a duty to make. Japanese required a high standard of efficiency and
quality of production from US workers.

5. Discuss management challenges from both perspectives, identify two challenges each side faced as
managers?
As the auto factory began to operate and Japanese and American people start to work together, culture
conflicts occur between them. On the Japanese side, they manage on a serious and strict way, like how
they were trained back on their country. While on the American side, they choose to manage with humor
and positive attitude. Japanese faced challenges on the American work culture, which is far different with
Japanese work culture. Also, Americans find humorous and show attitudes of ignorance to the common
routine of the Japanese people. They find it difficult to compromise with each other’s culture. When
managing employees, treating them nice as friends would lead to build a good relationship between the
manager and workers, and it could encourage the workers to work harder because it creates trust
between them.

6. Gung Ho is a great study for management from the perspective of ‘80s car manufacturing. This film
helps to understand management issues in general. In the context of management, gung ho is an
organization that is aggressive, ruthless, results-oriented, with low tolerance for mediocrity and failure. (a)
Do you have a superior who has a gung ho personality? (b) Do you have a gung ho personality?
Elaborate.
a. In my previous job, I have superiors which has gung ho personality.
b. In my current job, as leader, I see myself as a servant leader, opposite of gung ho leadership. Thus, I
believe I don’t have gung ho personality.
