What I Need to Know

As learners, you will learn in this module how you can maintain a good
conversation with those whom you communicate. You will realize that it is not only
important to be engaged with varied conversational settings, but you also need to develop
strategies to be able to establish a productive and meaningful communication
As communicators, you will encounter various communicative settings wherein you
will face different audience or listeners and you will be engaged to different topics or
discussions. A conversation may be complex at times, but with communicative strategies
you will increase your understanding on how you can lead the conversation effectively and
meaningfully.
In this module, you will learn the types of communicative strategy: nomination,
restriction, turn-taking, topic control, topic shifting, repair and termination.
It is important that you know how to productively begin and how to smoothly end
a conversation. You should also recognize your limitation as a speaker and figure out how
to address the problems or barriers that may occur in any communicative situation. These
are just some of the strategies that will lead you to a better communicative experience.
You will learn more as you study this module.

After reading and studying this lesson, you are expected to demonstrate the
following to:

Employ various communicative strategies in different situations

Moreover, in this lesson you will learn concepts and do practice activities that will help
you to do the following which are linked to the main lesson:

● cite communicative situations where the types of communicative strategy

commonly happen;
● construct meaningful speeches or expressions that correspond the types of
communicative strategy;
● describe each of the types of communicative strategy in one’s own words;
● use varied types of communicative strategy in a conversation;
● apply each of the types of communicative strategy by constructing a communicative
expression that corresponds the identified communicative situations; and
● express the importance of communicative strategies to different communicative
settings.

What is It
The following lesson will lead you on how you can enhance the effectiveness of your
communication to be able to achieve communication goals between you and another
communicator, or you and among other communicators.

Types of Communicative Strategy

1. Nomination
● This strategy is used to establish, present or open a clear and relevant topic with
the people whom we are communicating to.
● This also allows the conversation to progress or to continue.
Examples:

- “Have you read about the new guidelines for the enrolment?”
- “How can we help our friends on marketing their product?”
- “Can you still remember how we have spent our vacation in Davao?”
2. Restriction

● This is used to consider any limitation you may have as a speaker.

● If you are the listener, you respond only within a set of instructions given by the
speaker.
Examples:
- “Kindly tell you classmates what you gain from your participation in Campus
Journalism.”
- “Tonight is my farewell party, can you share an unforgettable moment that we
had together?”
3. Turn-taking
● This strategy leads the communicators to determine who should speak next to
establish and sustain a productive conversation.
● The primary idea of this strategy is to give all communicators a chance to speak.
Examples:
- “Keep on explaining your ideas before I give my views.”
- “I think we should listen carefully to our researcher, and after he/she speaks,
we can share our thoughts or suggestions.”

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE 4
4. Topic Control
● This strategy helps the communicators stick to a topic throughout the discussion.
● This is also a simple question-answer scenario that moves the discussion forward.
● You use this to avoid unnecessary interruptions and topic shifts when a topic is
initiated, but minimal responses like, “Yes,” “No problem,” “It is true, isn’t it?” can
be used to make yourself actively involved in the conversation.
Examples:
- “We are getting a decrease in our sales. Do you think we have to make
changes on our marketing plans?”
- “What other recommendations can you give to establish a good relationship to
other construction companies?”
5. Topic Shifting
● This strategy allows moving from one topic to another topic.
● It is where one part of a conversation ends and where another begins.
Examples:
- “By the way, will you also be taking an engineering course?”
- “Your stories remind me of my grandmother’s dedication on writing poems
about love and hope.”
6. Repair
● This strategy refers to how communicators address the problems in speaking,
listening and comprehending that they may encounter in a conversation.
Examples:
- “You may use a table presentation for an easier view of the results.”
- “We can refer from the dictionary to the proper pronunciation of this word.”
7. Termination
● This strategy refers to bringing the conversation to its conclusion, or simply ending
a topic in a communication
Examples:
- “The meeting is adjourned.”
- “I will visit you again. See you around!”
- “It’s wonderful sharing stories with you! More stories next time, bye!”

What’s More

activities help you increase your understanding about the topic.
