This manual has been edited primarily to give instructions for processing mineral
oils such as fuel oils and lubricating oils.
This manual also contains the instructions for the optional equipment available for
the SELFJECTOR and HBC-1 and HBC-2 automatic control panels. The descriptions
for the optional equipment are clearly identified with the options’ specifications.
Confirm the specifications in the furnished documents and read only the portions
that apply to the options you have purchased.

NOTE: Never modify your MITSUBISHI SELFJECTOR and its accessories without
maker’s approval.

WARNING

This instruction manual is a guide for using a self discharge type oil purifier, the
"Mitsubishi SELFJECTOR Hercules Series" (hereinafter referred to as the
SELFJECTOR).
The SELFJECTOR is a centrifugal separator rotating at high speeds. Please read
through this manual and obtain a complete understanding of the contents of the manual
before using the SELFJECTOR.
Handle the SELFJECTOR safely and operate it in the right way to get the best service.

1. PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFETY

Prior to use, carefully read through the "Precautions for Safety", and operate the SELFJECTOR in the
right way.

The precautions for safety in this instruction manual are intended for enabling the user to use the
SELFJECTOR safely and properly, and protecting the user from personal injury and damage. Carefully
read through the precautions until you have a complete understanding before performing any job or
procedure for operation or maintenance of the SELFJECTOR.

1.1. SYMBOLS ASSOCIATED WITH SAFETY

In this instruction manual, the precautions are headed by the following symbols. Since all of
them are important precautions associated with safety, be sure to strictly observe them.

! DANGER: Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not heeded, will


result in death or serious injury.

! WARNING: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not heeded, could


result in death or serious injury.

! CAUTION: Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not heeded, may result in minor or
moderate injury or damage to the machine or facilities.

NOTE: Indicates the items which should be done or which will be of help if kept in mind for
operating the machine or performing work.

1.2. PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFETY

CAUTION
The automatic control panel is a part of the equipment designed for automatic operation of the
SELFJECTOR. Improper handling of the panel could cause malfunctions and jeopardize your
safety. Before operation, maintenance and inspection of the panel, thoroughly read through
this manual and pay special heed to your safety when using the panel.

• Do not attempt disassembly and reworking of the control panel without permission of
Mitsubishi Kakoki.

• Never place the equipment in a position close to flammable materials.


If it is placed in a position close to flammable materials, an explosion or fire could result.

• Before proceeding with wiring, check to ensure that the input power supply to the system is
OFF.
There is danger of an electrical shock.

• Make sure that wiring is carried out by qualified electrical engineers.

• Connect the equipment to the hull in an electrically effective way by use of the ground
terminal of the panel.
(Make sure that the equipment is grounded.)

• Check to ensure that the rated voltage and frequency of the panel appropriate to those of the
power supply.

2. OVERVIEW OF AUTOMATIC CONTROL PANEL

The automatic control panel is designed for automatic operation of the Mitsubishi SELFJECTOR.

<Automatic Operation Processes>

Closes the main cylinder of the bowl

Supplies sealing water

Supplies feed oil (purifier operation)

Supplies replacement water

Opens the main cylinder of the bowl (discharge sludge)

The automatic control panel consists of the following components.


(1) Control switches, pilot lamps, fuses, power supply
(2) Control unit (including timer functions)
(3) Terminal unit (including auxiliary relays and fuses)

described below.

① "CONT.SOURCE ON-OFF"
The power switch for the automatic control panel.

② "CONT. SOURCE"
Lights when the power is supplied to the automatic control panel.

③ "AUTO. START"
The automatic running start switch.

④ "AUTO. STOP"
When this button is pressed during automatic running, the SELFJECTOR automatically
shuts down after completion of the process to discharge sludge.

⑤ “AUTO. RUNNING”
"AUTO. START" switch is pushed, automatic operation started. Lights during automatic
operation.

⑥ “FEEDING”
Lights during feeding oil to SELFJECTOR

⑦ "ALARM"
When any alarm occurs during operation, the pilot lamp comes on. The graphic panel
shows the type of alarm that has occurred.

⑧ "ALARM RESET"
The retained alarm is cleared by pressing this button for more than 3 seconds.
In the case of HBC-2, No.1 SELFJECTOR or No.2 SELFJECTOR status for monitoring
displayed on the graphic panel can be converted.

⑨ "DISCHG. TEST"
When this button is pressed during automatic running, sludge is compulsorily discharged.

⑩ “EMERGENCY STOP”
When this button is pressed, all the valves close and the SELFJECTOR shuts down
immediately.

⑪ “MM FUNC.”
This is a selector switch for ON/OFF control of FEED signals from the control panel to the
Multi Monitor. The switch is “ON” when the automatic control panel is turned on, and lights
“MM ON”. When the [MM ON] lamp is off, no FEED signal is output from the control panel
to the Multi Monitor even during oil feed. Each time this button is pressed, the green [MM
ON] lamp (LED) goes on and out alternately.

⑫ “GRAPHIC PANEL”
On this graphic panel, the operational status of the SELFJECTOR, bowl operating water
solenoid valves (SV1 - 3) and 3-way solenoid valve (SV4) and the type of alarm can be
identified.

4. CONTROL UNIT

The control unit is a controller with a built-in logic for automatic operation of the SELFJECTOR.
The control unit also contains the timer function.

4.1. OUTSIDE VIEW OF CONTROL UNIT

The control unit consists of LCD and operating switch. LCD displays and sets the timers and
options {For details, refer to Fig. 4-1 Outside View of Control Unit (for HBC-1) and Fig. 4-2
Outside View of Control Unit (for HBC-2)} It also has connectors for connection of the unit to the
terminal unit, etc.

5. TERMINAL UNIT

The terminal unit inputs and outputs signals from/to external devices. Two units for the No. 1
machine and the No. 2 machine are installed respectively. The terminal unit is connected to the
control unit through a connector.

5.1. OUTSIDE VIEW OF TERMINAL UNIT

The terminal unit consists of input/output indication LEDs, auxiliary relays, fuse, and external line
terminal boards. (For details, refer to Fig.5-1. OUTSIDE VIEW OF TERMINAL UNIT)

Name Function
Input Indication LEDs Indicate the input status of signals. They come on when
the corresponding front panel pushbuttons are turned ON or
when ON signals are issued from the corresponding
detectors.

Output Indication LEDs Indicate the output status of signals. They come on when
“ON” signals are output to the lamps on the front panel of
the control unit, when “Open” signals are output to the
solenoid valves, and when command signals are output to
the detectors, respectively.

Auxiliary Relays Cause the lamps on the front panel of the control unit to
illuminate, the solenoid valves to open, or output signals to
the individual detectors to be issued. The auxiliary relays
are of the socket type. When any of the auxiliary relays
fails, it can be replaced independently.

Fuse Blows when an over current flows to open or close the


solenoid valve.

5.2. FUNCTIONS OF INPUT AND OUTPUT INDICATION LEDS

6.2. OPERATING SWITCH


By using of Operating switch “Mode”, “Set”, ”Cancel”, “↑” and “↓”, display and set the timer and
option at LCD.

6.3. LCD DISPLAY


LCD is the two-step display of the upper and the lower row.
The upper row displays the timer current value, a timer set value, changing timer setting value, an
option setting value, and the changing option setting value.
The lower row displays scrolling the optional functions and the alarms.

6.3.1. LCD DISPLAY when the power source is switched on
After switched on power source, the lighting test of LED is done for about 2 seconds, comes on all
of LEDs of the graphic. The type and the soft version number are displayed on LCD during the
lighting test. Then, shift to display of timer current value.

6.3.2. LCD backlight


If the LCD backlight passes since the last switch operation for about 30 minutes, backlight will turn
off. The backlight lights up again by pressing any switch during the backlight off.
The switch operation at this time does not affect operation except turn on back light.

7. LCD DISPLAY MODE

Set the power switch of the control panel "ON", and check that the pilot lamp "CONT. SOURCE" and
the value indicator LEDs of the control unit are ON. Shifts to LCD display mode in 2 seconds.
There are timer mode and option mode in display mode. When the [Mode] switch is pushed by each
display mode, it will change to timer mode and option mode.

There are 3 timer modes, DISPLAY MODE OF TIMER CURRENT VALUE, DISPLAY MODE OF
TIMER SETTING VALUE, and CHANGE MODE OF TIMER SETTING VALUE.

8.3. SETTING VALUE OF TIMER

The times to be set for the timers vary with the following factors.
o Model number of SELFJECTOR
o Type of feed oil
o Operating water pressure and sealing water pressure

It is therefore necessary to set the timers so as to match the field conditions. When a trial run and
adjustments are performed by Mitsubishi Kakoki service person, the timers are set to the proper
values suitable for the field conditions before handover. If some change in the properties
confirmed, thereafter, refer to the following explanations and change the set times properly.

8.4. TIMER ELAPSED TIME INDICATION PROCEDURES
To monitor the elapsed time of a timer, proceed as described below.
When the power source is switched on, LCD displays the timer current value.
Press [Set] at timer setting value display mode, shift to current value display mode.
Press [Mode] at option setting value display mode, shift to timer current value display.
The lapsed time at timer operation is subtraction display.

9. OPTIONAL MODE

To use an optional detector, the optional function is to be enabled by “LCD” and “Operating Switch”
on the control unit. There are 2 mode in optional mode, option set value display mode and option set
value change mode. Refer to Table 9-1 for the kind and function of the options of LCD. In addition,
the option items are set up before shipments from the factory.
According to the specification of the demand, the option item of LCD was set up before shipment
from factory, and also it have been set up including allotment of an input output signal, the existence
of the relays, etc.
Therefore, only by setting the LCD optional function, the optional function does not become effective.
Since the optional functions are set to meet your requirements and specifications before shipment
from the factory, there is usually no need for changing the settings. Before operation, however,
confirm the settings.

10. PREPARATION FOR OPERATION

10.1. AUTO CONTROL PANEL

! CAUTION
o Refer to Section 8.3 and check that each of the timers has been set to the proper value for
the actual conditions (type of feed oil, model number of SELFJECTOR, working water
pressure, etc.).
o Pay special heed to the discharge interval timer "T115" and "T215", as it affects the
quantity of sludge to be accumulated in the bowl of the SELFJECTOR. Make sure that the
timer is set to the proper value for the type of feed oil. (To change the set time, refer to
Section 8.)
o When you perform setting change of an option function, please stop the operation of
SELFJECTOR FOR SAFETY

10.2. PURIFIER

Refer to the separate "Operation & Maintenance Manual" about operation of the SELFJECTOR
and valves.
Refer to the attached section15.1 Automatic Operation Flow Sheet (HBC-1, HBC-2) as well.

! CAUTION
o Make sure that the selection of the gravity disc is correct.
o Make sure position of the switches in the Multi-Monitor (MM) is right.
o Make sure the set pressure value of the operating water reducing valve is right.
o About details of the above, refer to Section 6.4, 6.5, and 8 so on in "Operation &

11. AUTOMATIC OPERATION

The procedures for automatic operation include:


o Procedures for automatic operation of one SELFJECTOR
o Procedures for automatic operation of two SELFJECTORs

11.1. Procedures for automatic operation of one SELFJECTOR only


This manual shows timer numbers of No.1 SELFJECTOR.
(The timer numbers of No. 2 SELFJECTOR are the numbers which added 100.)
Step 1. Set the power switch on the automatic control panel to "ON".
The pilot lamp "CONT. SOURCE" will light.
Step 2. Start the SELFJECTOR by the separately installed starter.

Step 3. After checking the ammeter to confirm that the SELFJECTOR has reached the rated
speed, press the pushbutton "AUTO. START" on the automatic control panel.
Solenoid valve SV2 will be operated, the bowl closing water will be supplied, and the
main cylinder of the bowl will be closed.
Step 4. The sludge discharge process timer and discharge interval timer in the automatic control
panel will operate in the following sequence for continuous purifier operation.

(Refer to the attached “15. AUTOMATIC OPERATION FLOW ” and “16. TIMING CHART” as
well.)

Interval timer 100 starts operation.

Timer 100 ... When the timer expires


o Solenoid valve SV2 will be deactivated to stop supplying bowl-closing water.
o Solenoid valve SV3 will be activated to supply replacement water into the bowl.
o At the same time, replacement water setting timer 102 will start operation.

Timer 102 ... When the timer expires,


o Solenoid valve SV3 will be deactivated to stop supplying replacement water.
o Solenoid valve SV1 will be activated to supply bowl opening water, and the bowl will
be opened to discharge replacement water.
o At the same time, bowl opening water supply time setting timer 101 will start operation.

Timer 101 ... When the timer expires,


o Solenoid valve SV1 will be deactivated to stop supplying bowl opening water.
o Solenoid valve SV2 will operate to supply bowl closing water, and the bowl will be
closed.
o At the same time, timer 100 will start operation.

Timer 100...When the timer expires


o Timer 100 will start operation again.

Timer 100...When the timer expires


o Solenoid valve SV2 will be deactivated to stop supplying bowl-closing water.
o Solenoid valve SV3 will be activated to supply sealing water into the bowl.
At the same time, sealing water supply time setting timer 103 will start operation.
Timer103...When the timer expires,
o Solenoid valve SV3 will be deactivated to stop supplying sealing water.
o At the same time, timer 100 will start operation.

Timer 100...When the timer expires,
o Solenoid valve SV4 for feed valve will be activated to open feed valve
CV1. The feed oil will then be forced into the SELFJECTOR to start
purifying.
o Pilot lamp "FEEDING" will come on.
o The discharge interval timer (timer 115) will operate. The CV1 will continue
to open as long as the set time.
o While the feed timer is in operation, bowl closing water solenoid valve SV2
will intermittently open to supply the bowl closing water.
More specifically, the following operations will be repeated:
Timer 114 will operate (intermittent bowl closing water supply interval) ->
Automatically repeated during operation

Timer 114 will expire -> Timer 116 will operate (SV2 will open to supply
bowl closing water) -> Timer 116 will expires (SV2 will be closed) -> Timer
114 will operate.
o A "FEED" signal will be output to the Multi Monitor.
o Timer 107 will operate. After the timer has expired, the "Oil high
temperature alarm block" signal output will be stopped.
(In case of equipped OPTION "H_TEMP")
o Timer 108 will operate. After the timer has expired, the "Oil low
temperature alarm block" signal output will be stopped.
(In case of equipped OPTION "L_TEMP")

Timer 115 ...When the timer expires,


o When the set time of the discharge interval timer 115 elapses, solenoid
valve SV4 for feed valve will be deactivated to close feed valve CV1 and
stop supplying the feed oil.
o The "FEED" signal to the Multi-Monitor will be cut off.
o At the same time, timer 100 will start operation.
o "DISCHARGE PROCESS" signal will be output to the Multi-Monitor.
(Optional Specification "DISCH")
o "OIL HIGH TEMPERATURE ALARM BLOCK" signal will be output.
(In case of equipped OPTION "H_TEMP")
o "OIL LOW TEMPERATURE ALARM BLOCK" signal will be output.

o Solenoid valve SV3 will be activated to supply replacement water into the

11.2. PROCEDURES FOR AUTOMATIC OPERATION OF TWO SELFJECTORS

Step 1. Start both No. 1 and 2 machines by the starter.


If one of the machines is already in operation, start the other one.

Step 2. After confirming that the SELFJECTOR(s) has reached the rated speed, press the
"AUTO START" of the associated machine on the automatic control panel. Then
both the No. 1 and 2 machines will automatically repeat the discharge and feed
operations according to Step 4 in Section 11.1.

11.3. SLUDGE DISCHARGE TEST

During feeding operation, a sludge discharge test can be performed at any time irrespective of the
elapsed feed time. When pushbutton "DISCHG. TEST" on the automatic control panel is pressed,
the SELFJECTOR will start the sludge discharge process in the same way as upon expiry of the
discharge interval timer (timer 115/215).

After discharge process is completed, the SELFJECTOR will resume the automatic operation.

11.4. AUTOMATIC STOP

Press pushbutton "AUTO. STOP" on the automatic control panel.


The SELFJECTOR will be automatically stopped after discharging the sludge.

11.5. EMERGENCY STOP

! CAUTION
When the SELFJECTOR is shut down because of an emergency, No opening of Bowl,
abnormal vibration or overload, it will be stopped without discharging the sludge
accumulated in the bowl. If the SELFJECTOR is restarted under that condition, the bowl
might lose balance and cause a hazardous situation. For this reason, be sure to
disassemble the bowl and remove the sludge in accordance with "Operation & Maintenance
Manual" before restarting operation.

! CAUTION
The automatic control panel is electrically interlocked with the starter. Therefore, the
automatic control panel is not operable unless the SELFJECTOR is started by the starter.
When the SELFJECTOR is operated without using the automatic control panel, operate the
individual solenoid valves manually.

In cases of emergency, press pushbutton "EMERGENCY STOP" on the automatic control panel.
In any of the processes, the power supply to the SELFJECTOR will be cut off, and all the solenoid
valves will be closed to stop operation.

12.1. "LEAK": OIL LEAKAGE ALARM

If the feed oil or processing oil flows out toward the heavy liquid outlet side or sludge chute side
during feeding operation, and the light liquid side pressure falls, the leakage detector function
(LM) will be operated to light the ALARM lamp on the automatic control panel, "LEAK" on graphic
panel, and "OIL_LEAKAGE" display scrolling on the LCD in the panel. Close feed valve CV1,
the SELFJECTOR will then stop operation after discharging the sludge.

If an alarm works, remove the cause of the alarm in accordance with the following table.
Thereafter, press pushbutton "ALARM RESET" for more than 3 seconds on the automatic control
panel and perform the procedures to restart operation.

12.2. "NDIS": NO OPENING OF BOWL ALARM
(Optional Specification)

This alarm works when no discharge is detected by the discharge detector function (DD) despite
the fact that a DISCHARGE SLUDGE signal was sent to the bowl opening solenoid valve (SV1).
As soon as this alarm occurs, the SELFJECTOR will be stopped immediately and light the
ALARM lamp on the automatic control panel, "NO-DIS" on graphic panel, and
"NO_DISCHARGE" display scrolling on the LCD in the panel. After removal of the cause of the
alarm, press pushbutton "ALARM RESET" for more than 3 seconds on the control panel and
perform the procedures to restart operation.

12.5."SV3 LEAK": SV3 LEAKAGE ALARM
(Optional Specification)

This alarm works when flow switch FLS detects of water flow a certain period by SV3 leakage
during automatic operation. (The alarm does not work when SV3 is operated, even if FLS detects
the water flow.)
When this alarm occurs " SV3 LEAK " display scrolling at LCD, and the SV4 will be closed, and
CV1 will be changed to return direction immediately. Simultaneously the opening water is
supplied from SV1, and the sludge discharging is done.
The automatic operating sequence stops, but the motor stop signal does not emit from the
automatic control panel and motor running is maintained.
Shut the inlet valve (piping of the ship side) of the operation water, and stop the supply of the
operating water.
Press the pushbutton "STOP" of motor running of the starter panel to stop the electric motor of
SELFJECTOR.
Remove the cause of the alarm. Thereafter, press pushbutton "ALARM RESET" for more than 3
seconds on the control panel and perform the procedures to restart operation.

13. SELECTING OPERATION MODE

13.1. SERIES OPERATION


When two SELFJECTORs are arranged in series and carried out the series operation, perform
either of the following setting procedures.

(1) The optional function, No.1 SELFJECTOR series operation (“SERIES”), is to be enabled
(“ON”) by LCD on control unit.
(2) Bridge the external line terminals of No.1 SELFJECTOR, 1SO1 and 1SO2 with a jumper
wire.

The series operation function is turned OFF at the factory before shipment.

13.1.1. Operation
When the series operation function is enabled, the SELFJECTOR will perform the following
operations in addition to the normal operations.

(1) When the SELFJECTOR No.1 (No.2) starts the discharge process, the feed valve of No.2
(No.1) is closed for a time to stop the feed signal output to the multi monitor to disable the
leakage detector function.

(2) During the clarifier operation, when the “AUTO.STOP” button is pushed, both SELFJECTOR
No.1 and No.2 are stopped. In case that the SELFJECTOR is stopped on an alarm signal or
through the “EMERGENCY STOP” button, it is same as the above-mention.

13.2. CLARIFIER OPERATION (“OP/OC”)
When the clarifier operation is carried out, assemble the special gravity disc for clarifier (Option),
and perform either of the following setting procedures.
(1) The optional function, object No. (No.1 or No.2) SELFJECTOR (”OP/OC”), is to be
enabled (“ON”)) by LCD on control unit.
(2) Bridge the external line terminals of No.1 SELFJECTOR, 1OP1 and 1OP2 (In case of
No.2 SELFJECTOR: 2OP1 and 2OP2) with a jumper wire.

13.2.1. Operation
When the clarifier operation function is enabled, the SELFJECTOR will perform the following
operation.

(1) No replacement water and no sealing water will be supplied in the discharge process.
(The timer count for replacement water (timer 102 or 202) and that for sealing water (timer
103 or 203) are made, but the SV3 is not energized.)

14. MAINTENANCE

14.1. Pilot lamp "AUTO. RUNNING" fails to light


During automatic operation, pilot lamp "AUTO. RUNNING" on the control panel should stay ON.
If the "AUTO. RUNNING" is OFF, the following causes are suspected.

(1) Defective pilot lamp LED


(2) Blown fuse
(3) Defective control unit
(4) Defective terminal unit

When the cause is (1), replace the control unit.

When the cause is (2), (3) or (4), all of the solenoid valves will be closed, and the automatic
operation function will be stopped.

(The SELFJECTOR, however, will continue to rotate.)

Investigate the cause and deal with correctively in accordance with the procedure shown on the
following page.

14.2. Replacement of Auxiliary Relay
The auxiliary relay on the terminal unit may fail because of its operating life limit or deterioration.
When the auxiliary relay is out of order, replace it in accordance with the following procedures.

(1) Unlock the relay socket by forcing both ends to open outward (①).
(2) Pull the relay straight upward by use of a pointed wrench or something else (②).
(3) Insert a new relay straight in the relay socket (③).

When you replace the relay, be sure to set the power switch of the control panel to "OFF"
beforehand. Otherwise there is danger of electrical shock.

o Make sure that the relay is inserted all the way until it is blocked.

14.3. REPLACEMENT OF FUSE
The fuse on the terminal unit may blow because of deterioration or solenoid valve over current.
Replace a blown fuse in accordance with the following procedures.
