1 Nitrogen is the most abundant gas found in the atmosphere. It deviates from ideal behaviour at certain
conditions.
(a) Explain why nitrogen gas deviates from ideal behaviour at room temperature?

(b) Give the conditions where nitrogen gas behaves ideally.

(c) State how the nitrogen gas deviates from ideal behaviour.

2 (a) When a sample of gas is heated from 24 oC to 128 oC at constant pressure, the final volume
occupied by the gas is 1.25 L. Determine the original volume of the gas.

(b) A 3.0 L closed cylinder contains a mixture of 11.25 g nitrogen oxide, NO and 33.95 g nitrogen
dioxide, NO2 at 27 oC. Assume that the gases are not reacted with each other:
(i) Calculate the total pressure of the gas mixture.

(ii) Calculate the partial pressures exerted by each gas.

(iii) Suggest the law used to determine the total pressure of the gas mixture.

3 A sample of potassium chlorate, KClO3, was decomposed upon heating producing potassium chloride,
KCl, and oxygen gas, O2. The volume of gas collected by displacement of water was 0.250 L at 26°C and
a pressure of 765 mmHg. Given water vapour pressure at 26°C is 25.2 mmHg, calculate

a) the partial pressure of O2.


b) the moles of O2 collected.
c) the amount of KClO3 (in g) decomposed.

1 The equilibrium between dinitrogen tetroxide, N2O4 (colourless) and nitrogen dioxide, NO2 (dark
brown) is represented by the equation below:

One mole of dinitrogen tetroxide is placed in a 22.4 L glass container and then allowed to equilibrate at
100 °C under a total pressure of 2.46 atm
a) Calculate the partial pressure of N2O4 and NO2 at equilibrium. [6 marks]
b) Calculate the equilibrium constant, Kp. [2 marks]
c) Calculate the equilibrium constant, Kc. [3 marks]
d) What colour of gas would be observed if the temperature of the container is increased? Explain
your answer. [3 marks]

2 Ammonia, NH3 is produces at 500℃ and 200 atm in the presence of Fe2O3 catalyst according to the
following equation:

3H2 (g) + N2 (g) ⇌ 2NH3 (g) ∆H = -92.22 kJ

Suggest two changes that can be made to increase the yield of NH3. Explain your suggestions.

3 The formation of sulphur trioxide, SO3 gas is shown in the following reaction:

By using Le Chatelier’s principle, predict and explain the shift in equilibrium position, if any, when:
a) the volume of the vessel is decreased.
b) the oxygen gas is added to the system.
c) the neon gas is added to the system at constant volume.
