METHOD STATEMENT
A Method Statement is an agreement between the workforces, Service Provider and the Person or Organization
requesting the work and that the work being undertaken is being managed and any risk is mitigated to an acceptable
level.
The method of work must be clearly communicated and understood by all parties involved. Operatives undertaking the
works the works supervisor and line managers must sign the document as agreement with the method of works.
It must be noted that more than one method statement may be required for any sequence of works.
Method statements and risk assessments go hand in hand, as the method of work is dictated by the risks identified, and
the risk is identified by the proposed method of work.
When conducting risk assessments in the first instance all built in safety experience must be ignored. This will allow
identity of the risks associated with what work is proposed. Then methods of work can be developed to reduce risk to an
acceptable level.

It is necessary to support and protection, on all affected and not affected by demolition, temporary and/or
permanent, prior, during and after project commencement based on actual site condition.
All labour, materials, including, scaffolding and appliances necessary for the completion of the projects.
General scope: -

members, such as the steel columns/trusses or RC floor/beams, into manageable sections for easier removal. Road
saws or other suitable equipment will be used rather than using mechanical breakers where possible. Steel
members can be dismantled and removed where feasible.
Minimizing risk of collapse
Following on from the soft strip out of the structure a more thorough assessment of the structure will be completed
by the demolition engineers. This will confirm the assumptions made heretofore and will inform on any particular
risk that needs to be accounted for.
The corrugated sheet on the roof and walls will be unscrewed/dismantled using power and hand tools on
manlift/mobile scaffold.
Small beam supporting the main beam will be cut using power tools and gas torch, the main beam will be supported
by mobile crane after calculating centre of gravity to stabilize the structure.
The walls are then ties with ropes from inside of the structure to avoid fall of walls. The supports must be given to
the walls from both sides (inner and outer) with wooden logs and/or steel pipes.
The main beam will be dismantled and settle down on the ground using mobile crane, two taglines must be
attached to hold the load.
The walls are then dismantled into pieces while having the supports from both sides of the walls. Walls are the
settle down using mobile crane. This procedure will be repeated for all four walls.
The dismantled material is to be cut in pieces to transfer outside of KAUST premises.
The following is a high-level method statement for the demolition of the structure.
Warehouse 1:
Top down method shall be implemented for the demolition.
Steel structure and roof dismantling shall be carried out stage by stage without affecting the structural stability.
Roof shall be dismantled at first. The removal order shall be roof tiles and other roof partitions then battens and
finally rafters to follow using mobile crane.
Then the structural elements shall be dismantled. The dismantling area shall be identified and be checked on the
discontinuity of structural system prior to dismantle.
In the case when structural stability of beams is affected, the affected beams shall be propped prior to loss of
support or restraint. Propping shall be provided until the confirmation of structural stability
The demolition order for the super structure shall be secondary beams, main beams and finally columns.
Gas cutting shall be used if necessary to disconnect welded joints. It may also require to cut the welded joints using
angle cutter. The dismantling will also require to work at height using manlift / mobile scaffold.
Once superstructure is removed, floor demolition shall be started.
Floor slab shall be demolished by gradually breaking away from the edge of slab.
The reinforcement shall be remained and be cut off after the concrete is broken away.
As the final process of the demolition, substructure shall be removed. First the stumps then footings shall be hacked
away. If require, an excavator shall be provided to remove the footing.
Any holes/pits found shall be immediately backfilled with a suitable material
Warehouse 2:
Dismantling of second warehouse (erected by tube and clamps) to be carried out by trained and competent workers
under supervision of Supervisor / Foreman.
An assessment (by the supervisor) of the best method of dismantling will take place that reduces overall risks, risk at
falling materials and maintenance of the stability of the structure.
No ties or bracing shall be removed in advance of general dismantling.
Working area will be cleared and will remove all debris to avoid any obstruction.
All possible access to the dismantled sections of warehouse should be barred and a warning sign displayed.
Tubes and fittings will be stacked at ground level unless the first lift has been designed to support the extra loading.
Unauthorized personnel shall be restricted from areas where the dismantling of warehouse taking place.
All dismantled material will be properly arranged and stacked with barricades and signage prior to removal. The
material is then will be removed from the site outside of KAUST premises using trucks.
The area will be cleared and will perform housekeeping, all debris is to be removed through AVERDA / third party
outside of KAUST premises.

Establish a site set-up and welfare facilities.
• Erect any necessary hoarding around the perimeter of the site.
• Carry out an intrusive survey to identify the presence of any carcinogenic materials, in particular as possible fire
protection to steel work, and in plant areas.
• Use the existing services survey of the site to identify all buried services, determine what services are live,
redundant, and potentially serve neighbouring properties.
• Carry out any necessary services diversions and decommissioning works.
• Carry out a soft strip of the structure to remove free-standing units, office furniture, floor finishes, ceiling tiles,
window blinds, partitions, doors and door frames, ceiling bulkheads, M&E services, radiators, light fittings, fixtures,
and fittings.
• Demolish the structure lightweight steel roof structure and using angle grinders and gas torches to cut the steel
into small sections to be dismantled and removed with the help of truck.
• Demolish the structure masonry walls using sledgehammer and/or a mini digger. Cut and remove the RC first
floor slab and beams hand tools where possible.
1. As part of the comprehensive site-specific construction and demolition waste management plan all debris will be
separated on site and stored in skips for removal and transport to the approved location.

Upon completion of the works to the satisfaction of the Client, the site will be thoroughly cleaned and tidied with all
waste removed from site.
