Lucie San Pedro (1013-20021 National Art for

Mic (1991)

He was bom on February 11, 1913 in Angono, Rizal He

already made some compositions during his elementary days.

He was a master composer, a leacher. and a conductor whose

music inspires folk elements of the Filipino heritage. He was a

professor of theory and composition at the University of the

Philippines.

He was widely known for his composition "Sa Ugoy ng

Duyan" "Suite Pastorale" (1956), a poetic aural description of

his hometown and his nationalistic symphonic poem "Lahing

Kayumangg" (1962) that represented his orchestral

compositions. His other compositions include

songs and pieces for plano, violin, cello, and chorus.

He was recognized internationally when he was invited to be


a judge at the prestigious Van Clibur International Piano

Competition in 1980

Antonio Molina (1894-1980) National Artist for

Music (1973)

He was born on December 26, 1894 in Quiapo,

Manila. He was the last of the musical triumvirate, two

of whom were Nicanor Abelardo and Francisco

Santiago. His most familiar composition is

"Hatinggabi," a serenade for solo violin and piano

accompaniment

He was fascinated by the dynamics and harmonies of

Debussy, thus tagging him as the Claude Debussy of


the Philippines. This was also because of his musical

style- Impressionism which conveys scenes, moods,

and emotions rather than detailed stories. He passed

away on January 29, 1980.

Hilarion Rubio (1902-1985)

He was born on October 21, 1902 in Bacoor, Cavite. He was a

composer, conductor, music teacher, and clarinetist who

created substantial works for orchestra, His interest in music

was greatly influenced by his uncle who was a member of

Bacoor Band. He became a clarinetist of the same band when

he was eight years old. That was also the time when he made

his firat composition "Unang Katas for his concert with the

band.

He composed and arranged many works during World War II.

After the war, he was appointed conductor of the Manila


Municipal Symphony Orchestra. He became the Vice

President of the PASAMBAP (Pambansang Samahan ng mga

Banda sa Pilipinas). Among his compositions are "Unang

Katas," "Hatulan Mo Ako," "In a Tropical Sea," "Light" "Narra,"

"Mutya ng Silangan, and "Ginintuang Arawy." He passed

away on December 28, 1985

Col. Antonino Buenaventura (1904-1996)National

Artist for Music (1988)

He was born on May 4, 1904 in Baliuag, Bulacan, Aside from

being a fine composer, he was also a competent conductor

and a dedicated educator. He graduated with a Teacher's

Diploma in Music major in Science and Composition. Ho

joined the UP Conservatory as an assistant instructor.

Antonino Buenaventura was also designated by Dr. Francisco

Santiago, the dean of the conservatory, to take over Nicanor

Abelardo's class when the latter died in 1934. He was also


actively involved with different military bands eaming him his

military rank of Colonel. As a multi-awarded musician, his

compositions included "Mindanao Sketches," "Divertimento

for Piano and Orchestra," "Minuet," and "Variations and

Fugue." He passed away on January 25, 1996 but his works

continuously contribute a lot to Philippine music enrichment.

Francisco Bantiage (1889-1947)

He was bom on January 20, 1809 in Sta Maria

Bulacan. Both of his parents are musically inclined te

when a was established in 1916 His most famous

piece was "Kundiman (Anak Dalta)"


His other compositions include: "Hibik ng Filipinas,"

"Bakali Man," "Ang Pag-big." "Alaala Kita," "Ikaw at

Ako," "Ano Kaya ang Kapalaran," "Hatol Han Kaya,"

"Madaling Araw," and "Pakiusap." He was the first

Filipino Director of UP Conservatory of Music from

1930-1946 At the age of 58, he died on September

28, 1947

Rodolfo Cornejo (1909-1991)

He was bom May 15, 1909 in Singalong. Manila. He

was a composer, planist, and conductor. He started

piano lessons at age six, had his first recital at age

eight, and became the organist of the Pasay Catholic

Church. At age 10, he wrote his first composition

"Glissando Waltz." then a military march salute at age


13.

He attained a bachelor's degree in piano and theory

at the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt in 1932.

Two years later, he went back to the Philippines and

directed the Manila Conservatory of Music Aher five

years, he again left for the US to pursue doctorate

studies in composition. He became director of the

Cosmopolitan Colleges Conservatory of Music in the

Philippines from 1948 to 1949. As musical director of

Sampaguita Pictures, he wrote scores for 27 fms.

He wrote over 300 compositions ranging from

classical to pop. He was known for his

extemporaneous thematic improvisations based on

the letters of people's names. Among these

compositions were "A la Juventud Filipina," "Balles de

Ayer," "Cello Sonata, "Ibong Adama," "Kandingan,"


"Malakas at Maganda Overture," "Oriental Fantasy,"

"Philippine Fantasy with Marimba Solo," the cantata

"Christ the Redeemer," and "Song of the Miners." He

died on August 11, 1991.

Francisco Buencamino, Sr. (1803-1057)

He was bom on November 5, 1883 in San Miguel de

Mayumo, Bulacan. His parents were both musicians; his father

being a church organist and bandmaster while her mother

being a noted singer. Taught by his father, at an early age of

12, he could already play the piano.


This early exposure to music was supplemented by education

in composition and harmony at the Liceo de Manila having

Marcelo Adonay, an eminent composer and conductor in the

late 19" century, as his mentor, Nicanor Abelardo became

one of his students when he created the Buencamino Music

Academy in 1930. Aside from these achievements, he

ventured into musical directing and scoring. He was a film

score composer for Sampaguita Pictures, LVN, and Excelsior.

To name a few, his compositions include "Collar de

Sampaguita," "Ang Una Kong Pag-ibig," "Kapalaran," "Mi

Bandera," "My Soul's Lament," and "Larawan."

Nicanor Abelardo (1893-1934)

He was born on February 7, 1893 in San Miguel de Mayumo,

Bulacan. His musical style involved a combination of

romanticism and chromaticism. He learned solfeggio and

banduria playing from his father at the age of 5. He was


already able to play William Overture on guitar a year later.

"Ang Unang Buko" was his first composition dedicated to his

grandmother. As seen in his works like "Cinderella Overture,"

"Panoramas, and a violin sonata, his compositions contain

clouded tones, dissonance, and unusual chordal

combinations. He pursued further studies at the Chicago

Musical College. When he returned to the Philippines, he

continued teaching in UP and also taught music to students

in a boarding house run by his family. He has more than 140

compositions including "Nasaan Ka Irog." "Kundiman ng

Luha," "Mutya Ng Pasig," and "Bituing Marikit." He passed

away on March 21, 1934 at the age of 41.

Rosendo Santos, Jr. (1922-1994)

He was born in Caridad, Cavite City on September 31922 His

father was Rosendo Ejercito Santos, r who served Mayor of

Cavite for three times Rosendo inherited his music from the
former Castora Salazar whe as a young get, was an

accomplished harpist At age 10, he took his first music

lessons under Julian Felpe, the composer of the Philippine

National Anthem. Thoughsingle, he was expected to provide

for his family including his parents, five other youngsters,

nieces, and nephews. He headed the Philippine Navy Choir

and in addition, he frequently arranged music for two Cate

City bands. One prominent band under his direction is the

"96 Band." He has more than 1000 musical compositions in

the UP library. His last musical work and only ballet

composition, Melinda's Masquerade was published a year

after his death. He died in Swoyersville, Pennsylvania, USA on

November 4, 1994.
Alfredo Buenaventura (born 1929)

He was bom on October 14, 1929 in Sta. Maria, Bulacan. He

was a composer, conductor, and teacher, He was drawn by

his fascination with trumpets and trombones prompting him

to become a band member in his hometown at a young age.

Eventually, he became one of the band's arrangers and

conductors. He received his first significant musical training at

Sto. Domingo Church where he was one of 20 boy sopranos

of Tiples. He finished his Bachelor of Music degree in

Composition and Conducting from Centro Escolar University

and also became the Dean of the College of Music in the

same university. He has composed over 50 major works but

many of his compositions are based on Filipino heroes,

legends, and epics. Among his major works are operas Maria

Makiling (1961), Diego Silang (1966), and Prinsess Urduja

(1969): cantatas "Ang Ating Watawat" (1965) and "Pasko ng

Barangay (1964); and symphonies such as "Dakilang Lahi"


(1971). "Gomburza" (1981) and "Rizal, the Great Malayan

Antagonist" (1990)

He was born on May 4, 1954 in Manila. He is regarded ne

most accomplished composer, arranger and Plow director in

the Philippine music industry since this bloomed beginning

the 1970s Cayabyab is a household name being very visible

on National TV He was once a TV host of a long-running arts

and culture series and a judop realty TV singing competitions

Most of his compositions are of traditional Western influence.

Among his notable compositions are Rama-Harttwo-act

musical ballet, 1980), Katy! The Musical (two- act musical,

1988), Spoliarium (three-act opera, 2003). Larawan: The

Musical ( length musical film, 2017), "Da Coconut Nut," "Kay

Ganda Ng Ating Musika," "Nais Ko." "Paraiso," "Kahit Ika'y

Panaginip Lang," "Kallan," and "Tuwing Umuulan At Kapiling

Ka".
