HEN HOUSE
WHICH ONE?

The HEN House

Prefab or RCC?

After a survey of the level of expertise that the Prefab manufacturers have achieved
and the quality product they are able to install leaves very little to object against it.
Further more, the delays due to normal RCC work routines and the unprofessional
attitude of the local contractors (to whom the work will have to be out sourced)
makes it more prudent to go Prefab.

So what are the options? The different manufacturers who were contacted and have
filed in their offers let us discuss the main contenders.

HEN HOUSE

Project Team’s Responsibility

The whole system will be installed on a turn-key basis by the Vendor. Their team
including Engineers and Supervisors would be coming down at the site to
install the whole system. There will be two responsibilities of the Project team.
The first would be to provide them with a ready site where 24X7 power and
water are ensured apart from any government / local body permissions
(covered in Preoperatives). The second responsibility would be to provide a
concrete platform on which the Prefab House can be installed.

Prefab Foundation

The Prefab Hen House will be erected on a concrete platform, which would also act
as the foundation of the heavy steel structure (361 M Ton). The type of foundation for
the work at hand would be Mat (Slab) Foundation. Its design and construction
method is illustrated in the pictures that follow.

Cost

The size of the Prefab House being 112m X 17m X 4m, at least a gutter of 1m on all
sides would be a safe call. So the size of the slab foundation becomes 114m X 19m,
which is equal to 23314 sq ft. Cost of such work on a per sq ft basis as revealed by
local builders is usually around Rs 30 to Rs 40 per sq ft. This being a large volume
work, we can assume Rs 30/ sq ft which gives a cost of Rs 7 lakhs.

62
Control
HEN HOUSE CONTROL, POWER CONTROL & DG SET

Control Room

The DG Sets (2 of 50 kV each) will come with separate sound-proof enclosures, which
will need a separate room. The DG sets will be wired in for controlled from inside the
Control Room where the power supply line is fed in after being stepped down by the
Transformer kept just outside the fence. An inverter will take care of putting the power
supply on DG Set back-up in case of power failure from the step-down Transformer.
The arrangement is shown on the next page. Shown below is Power Supply from
Generating Station to the Project Site (inside red box).

Feed Mill & Godown
MILL & STORAGE

Feed Godown

Rats and mice cause serious damage to all kinds of grains if they are allowed access to
them. As rodents cannot crawl upside down; so a 2 feet extended platform above 3 feet
plinth level helps to prevent rodents in feed mill.
So let us try to make an estimate of the amount of Feed required to be stored and the
space needed to store it.
- 3.5 Tons / Ha of Maize (Kanchan / Proagro-4412 variety under 100 kg N equivalent
dose of Cattle dung + Vermicompost + poultry manure - please see the in-depth
discussion in the ‘Feed Management’ Section of this document)
- So, @ 90 g / day for one year 3200 Tons Feed is required (for a single Batch of 95000
birds - calculations assume a ‘full feed year’; so when the Hen House is empty for a
part of the year, the calculations change but we must take the full capacity scenario).
- The average Feed formula needs 62% Maize & 25% Soybean
- In the Indian context, 2 crops of maize and 1 of Soybean can be taken / year
- For Maize, a space to store 1000 Ton storage will be needed while for Soybean, the
space will be needed to store 400 Ton
- 1.8 M3 per Ton space is required to store Maize & 2.0 M3 / Ton for Soybean
- For bags made of plant fibre (jute, sisal, etc.) maximum heights can be 5-6 metres,
while for plastic bags (woven polythene) the height should not exceed 3 metres.
- Furthermore, enough space must be left between the roof of the building and the top
of the stacks for a workman to move about freely.
- Based on the above pointers, to store 1000 Ton Maize, 1800 M3 space is required. A
suggested size of the Godown can be 40 m X 15 m X 5m if the Storage is planned in
stacks of 4 X 2 that are separated by 1 m each while there is space of 1 m from roof.
- Similarly, to store 400 Ton Soybean, an area of 800 M3 space would be required (a
suggested size can be = 20 m X 12 m X 3m and stacking can be done in the same
manner as the Stacking Plan for Maize mentioned above).
- On the basis of prices quoted by different suppliers listed on India Mart and other
web-sites, considering a construction cost @ Rs 300/ sq feet for Prefabricated
Godowns we get a cost of Rs 20 lakhs for the Maize Godown while the cost for the
Soybean Godown would be approximately Rs 8 lakhs.

FEED STORAGE

Precautions for Feed Storage

The poultry storage facility should be kept as close to the poultry house as possible for
practical reasons. Some poultry farms build the storage area for poultry feeds inside the
poultry house. In many poultry farms, however, the feed silos are placed right next to the
poultry house to provide for maximum convenience.
Storage Facility- The poultry feed storage facility should meet certain minimum
requirements. It should provide shelter from direct sunshine; must be cool and well
ventilated; should be able to keep the feed dry and ensure low humidity; must protect the
poultry feed from vermin such as mice and rats and insect pests; must keep the poultry
feed off the ground to protect it from mold spoilage and ground condensation and finally,
it should protect the poultry feed from drugs and chemicals.
Storage Conditions - Poor storage conditions for your poultry feeds will reduce their
shelf life and may lead to the loss of important nutrients like the anti-oxidants, some
essential fatty acids along with vitamins. This will in turn hinder the growth of your poultry
and lead to higher mortalities in your flock.
If poultry feed is stored in wet area, it will get moldy and stale and will pose a serious
health risk for your birds. The worst are the molds that grow quickly on the poultry feed
and produce mycotoxins. This mostly occurs during warm and humid weather. The use of
moldy poultry feeds inevitably leads to illnesses, performance losses as well as possible
mass mortality in your flock.
It is hard to estimate the shelf life of poultry feed in storage facilities, even under the best
of conditions. The longevity will depend on the conditions in the storage as well as the
composition of the poultry feed.
The local climate will also play a key role in determining the life-span of your poultry feed.
This is especially so when it comes to the temperature and the relative humidity of the
local area and the housing. Even with an excellent food storage system, food should only
be stored for a short duration of time. The ideal timeframe should be two months after the
date of manufacture. By reducing the storage time, you can ensure a faster turnover
thereby cutting down on the inventory costs while giving your flock fresh and high quality
poultry feed.
Temperature - When storing the poultry feed, you should be wary of the exposure to the
sunshine. Radiation from the sun can degrade the quality of the feed through the effect of
the greenhouse gases. Overheating may also negatively impact the nutritional content of
the food leading to the breaking down and degradation of the proteins or the fats being
rancid. Use housing material such as iron sheets that will reflect back most of the heat and
radiation thus helping preserve a cool and dry environment inside the poultry feed
storage area.
In very hot climates, it is advisable to use insulated bins for poultry feed storage so as to
help keep cool and stable temperatures inside the poultry feed storage bin. Another
advantage of insulated bins is that they can help reduce or entirely prevent condensation
at night when the temperatures fall. Condensation creates humid conditions and is likely
to lead to the growth of mold on top of the layers of poultry feed.

FEED MILL

Space for Feed Mill

A poultry feed plant won't take as much space as a poultry farm, nonetheless, the
bigger the plant, the wider the space required and occupied. A number of factors
determine the success of a poultry feed plant. And they include space, raw resources for
the meals, machines and adequate labour.
The PLAN below shows how Maize & Soy Godowns can be placed on either side of the
Mill for easy access to Raw Materials while having direct access to the 2-3 Ton Silos
provided for each of the Hen Houses so that prepared Feed can be directly replenished.

FEED MILL

So all we need to design is

space for the following-

1. Mill
2. Weighing Scale
3. Loader to Silo
4. Space for work
Considering size of selected
Mill Machinery, 1000 sq ft
(50’ X 20’) should be able to
serve the purpose.
Therefore considering a
construction cost @ Rs 300/
sq feet for Prefabricated
Godowns we get a cost of
Rs 3 lakhs

EGG Godown

The layout for a modern Egg Godown & Shipping Facility is shown below. The actual
dimensions of the space that would be taken up as per the different functions of the
facility can be decided on the basis of the following -

a. Daily Production
b. Export / Local Market / Long distance road
c. Shipping volume etc
Initially the Godown will have only one Batch of 95000 sending it the Eggs but this
Facility s designed for 2 lakh Eggs, which can be expanded to 1 million. So initially
the size of the Facility can be 30’ X 20’ = 600 sq ft, which @ Rs 500/ sq ft = Rs 3 lakhs.

Manure Facility
MANURE COLLECTION, DRYING & STORAGE

Manure Collection & Drying

Manure after being collected by the Manure Conveyor Belts inside the Hen House will
travel outside the Hen House where a small Shed is provided to park a Trolly that will
collect the Raw Manure from the out coming Belt. When the Trolly is full, it will be driven
out to the Manure Facility situated outside the Hen House Complex. The collected
manure is transferred and stored in various methods depending on whether it is in
liquid or solid form, which is then stored in two manners-
• Inside the Dryer Facility for drying - there will be just enough space to take in a single
trolley full manure at a time, which will be fed directly to the Dryer.
• The second type of storage would be that of ‘dried manure’, which will be bagged
and stored for further use in the ‘Manure Godown’. It might be sent from there to the
‘Manure Farm’ for composting or as the 'Manure Plan’ directs.
• A third type of storage solution will be send part of the manure straight to the
‘Manure Farm’, but again this will be directed by the ‘Manure Plan’.
As well, it may be necessary to cover these storage areas to avoid odour emissions and
rain water collection. If an earthen storage is used, it must have manure- tight soil
conditions or a water proof lining is required.

Once manure is driven to the Unloading Bay of the Manure Facility, it will be emptied
fed to the Manure Dryer installed there. After the cycle of Manure drying is complete,
the DRY MANURE will be bagged and stored to be transported to the ORGANIC FARM.

So let us work out the size & design of the Manure Facility.

Size & Design of Manure Facility

The Design is detailed in the action on ‘Plant & Machinery’. Here we estimate the
costing and layout of the structure that will house ether facility. On an average, a total of
2300 Ton of Manure is produced in the year by One Batch of Hens. If the dried Manure
is removed every month to the ‘Manure Farm’ then 200 Ton storage with room for
Manure Dryer machines and moving is needed - about 20 m X 12 m X 3 m = 66’ X 40’
floor area to a height of 10’ should suffice. The cost of construction @ Rs 300 per sq ft
comes out to Rs 8 lakhs.
