A. Introduction 60 mins. Accidents and incidents in the workplace account for hundreds of thousands of
Panimula injuries and fatalities every year. Identifying hazards is the first step in removing or
mitigating risks, and mitigating risks prevents injuries. Hazards come in many
shapes, some more serious than others, and will vary depending on the working
environment. Even with the most thorough and detailed hazard identification
and prevention techniques accidents and incidents will still occur in the
workplace. Being aware of the hazards and the risks associated, will help to keep
them at a minimum and hopefully help to prevent related injuries.

For this lesson, you will learn to follow Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
procedure in dealing with and for controlling hazards and risks and establish
organizational protocol in providing appropriate assistance in workplace
emergencies.
Guide Questions:
1. How to follow occupational Health and Safety (OHS) procedures in
dealing with and controlling hazards and risks?
2. How to establish organizational protocol in providing appropriate
assistance in workplace emergencies?

Evaluating and controlling Hazards and Risks

After identifying the hazards in a workplace, the next steps are to properly
evaluate and control the hazards. These steps may be very specific to your
workplace, so be sure to take your time and ask for help when needed. Also, be
sure to check if your workplace has specific emergency safety features.
Evaluating risks is a key step in working with hazardous materials, instrumentation,
and equipment. A risk assessment will in part examine the probability that an
adverse event will occur and the consequence of that event when working with
hazardous materials. Ultimately, this can help to determine the proper controls
that will be needed to avoid the adverse event. A risk assessment can reduce
the likelihood that faculty, staff, or students may be unnecessarily exposed to a
workplace hazard.

Control hazard and risks

Selecting an appropriate control is not always easy. It often involves doing a risk
assessment to evaluate and prioritize the hazards and risks. In addition, both
"normal" and any potential or unusual situations must be studied. Each program
should be specially designed to suit the needs of the individual workplace.
The main ways to control a hazard include:

• Elimination (including substitution): remove the hazard from the

workplace, or

• Substitute (replace) hazardous materials or machines with less hazardous
ones.
• Engineering Controls: includes designs or modifications to plants,
equipment, ventilation systems, and processes that reduce the source
of exposure.
• Administrative Controls: controls that alter the way the work is done,
including timing of work, policies and other rules, and work practices
such as standards and operating procedures (including training,
housekeeping, and equipment maintenance, and personal hygiene
practices).
• Personal Protective Equipment: equipment worn by individuals to reduce
exposure such as contact with chemicals or exposure to noise.
Most Effective Hazard Controls The best way to protect workers is to remove or
eliminate the hazard from the workplace using the following hazard control
methods: Substitution. Substitute dangerous chemicals, equipment or work
methods with safer and less hazardous ones to eliminate the hazard altogether.

Best Ways to Prevent Workplace hazards

Consider the following tips to bolster your safety efforts:
1.Promote safety awareness and education with regular safety briefings and
employee safety training.

2.Install proper lighting to create a well-lit and visible jobsite that makes it easier
for your staff to see potential risks and avoid them.

3.Communicate safety hazards with adequate signage that clearly identifies

hazardous areas and potential risks like obstacles, spills, toxic materials, or other
hazards.

4.Routinely check for safety hazards, like spills or obstacles.

Install proper ventilation to prevent toxic chemicals or other foreign particles from
being inhaled by your employees.

5.Enforce proper attire that’s necessary for accident prevention, like hard hats or
slip-resistant shoes.

Use of Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential for caregivers. Those who care
for loved ones, as well as individuals who provide professional care services for
others, must minimize their exposure to infectious illnesses. PPE provides that
protection. In recent months, COVID-19 has opened our eyes to how easily
infection spreads from one person to another before we realize the threat exists.
We also know that the elderly and those who have compromised immune
systems are more susceptible to infection. One way to protect us from viruses is
to wear PPE.

Proper handwashing
Right now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, regular handwashing is one of the
best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of germs
to others. Whether you are at home, at work, traveling, or out in the community.
With all that a caregiver or healthcare provider must consider when caring for a
patient, it may come as a surprise that hand hygiene is the single most important
patient care practice one can perform in preventing healthcare-related
infections.
Proper hand washing is very simple, requiring only the following basic steps:
1.Prepare your materials before washing your hands: paper towel, bar or liquid
soap.

2.Wet wrist and hands thoroughly.

3.Apply liquid soap (if available) and scrub vigorously, pay special attention to
nails, between fingers and around rings.

4.Rinse thoroughly under running water. Remember to rinse from above the wrist
down to the fingers.

5.Dry with a paper towel or clean cloth. Avoid using a towel, which can put
germs back onto your clean hands. Close the tap with the paper towel, not your
hand. This paper towel should be discarded immediately.
