Introduction
This Design Calculations Package has been prepared using the latest applicable American codes and
standards and the latest developments in engineering practices. A competent design engineer prepared
the calculations and another competent engineer checked his work. The initials of both engineers are
shown on most pages.
Computer programs, verified and tested by Zamil Steel, have been used where applicable to determine
structural requirements. The output of these programs has been incorporated in this package together
with explanation text where possible. The whole package has been prepared using an advanced
computer text processor.
For your easy reference, all pages have been numbered and a table of contents has been provided. We
have divided the package into Four sections as follows:
1. Design Information: This section contains the description of the building designed, design
codes and material specifications used, design assumptions, loads and design sketches showing
building components layouts and members sizes.
2. Computer Design Printouts: This section includes the output of computer programs used in
the design along with explanations for the output where possible.
3. Design Reference Tables and Data Sheets: This section includes the mechanical properties of
all steel sections available for use by Zamil Steel and different load capacity tables. This section
also includes reference data for Zamil Steel standard designations and computer programs.
4. Design Verification: This Section includes design of one member in detail according to the
used code.
Please use this calculations package in conjunction with the drawings provided. You can resubmit this
package with the drawings to other parties for their approval as required, or, keep this package for
future reference. Zamil Steel does not require these calculations to be returned.
For any questions regarding this package please do not hesitate to contact our sales office. Zamil Steel
keeps records of reference on design calculations for each building designed as a part of Zamil Steel
total quality system.

Design Assumptions
• The main frame rafters and exterior columns are rigidly connected to each other (using moment type
connections).
• The lateral stability of the building is provided through the frame action of the main frames.
• The longitudinal stability of the building is provided through the truss action in the cross braced
bays of the building.
• The roof purlins are continuous beams supported at rigid frame locations and span the bay spacing
of the building.

How
ASFAD
(Advanced Steel Frame Analysis & Design)
Works
1.Introduction:
ASFAD is a Sructural Analysis and Design package developed by Zamil Steel to satisfy the
requirements of the Pre-Egineered Steel Buildings industry. The package was developed using C++
language utilizing the latest programming , analysis and design techniques. It has many features to
facilitate design of various elements and to ensure the economy , safety , uniformity and high
quality of the structural designs.
2.Structural Modeling:
Structural modeling is based on dividing the Structure into Members which connect to each other at
common points called Nodes.
Nodes are defined by their X and Y (Horizontal & Vertical) Coordinates according to the
Structure’s Global Coordinate System that is common for all Nodes and Members..
Members are defined by their Start and End Nodes and by their properties which may vary along
their lengths. Members may be broken into several Sections each of which is defined by its
respective length and properties.
The above basic model simulates the actual behavior of a Structure by including the Support
conditions and the Members’ end conditions.
3. Analysis Method:
The method used for the analysis of a Structure is the Stiffness Matrix Method.
Members may have variable properties along their lengths. Such Members are called non-prismatic
elements and the stiffness coefficients for such Members are calculated by numerical integration
techniques.
End forces at Nodes due to intermediate Members’ Loading are also calculated by the same
numerical integration techniques.
The numerical integration technique is based on the Energy Method which is achieved by dividing
a Member into Segments (Members are broken into Sections and Section are broken into Segments)
. The accuracy of this method depends on the length of Segment and number of Segments in the
Member. Analysis results for different models have proven that the use of a 0.5 meter Segment and
a minimum of 10 Segments per Member leads to very accurate and acceptable results.

4. Loads:
Loading is defined by specifying various Load Cases , Load Categories & Load Conditions.
A Load Case is a set of Nodal Loads & Member Loads that act simultaneously.
Example: Dead , Live , Wind (Windleft or Windright or Windend)
Crane (Crane-1 or Crane-2 or Crane-3 or Crane-4) , Seismic.
A Load Category is a group of various Load Cases that will never act simultaneously.
Example: The Load Category “Wind” contains three Load Cases:
- Windright
- Windleft
- Windend
A Load Condition is a combination of Load Categories. When a Load condition is specified the
program will internally generate all the possible Load Case combinations that result from the Load
Condition. Each Member will be checked for the most critical Load Case combination.
Example: The Load Condition “Dead + Wind + Crane”
As shown in the above example categorizing Load Cases makes one Load Condition sufficient to specify
all possible 12 Load Case combinations rather than specifying each of them individually.
Wind Load is generated based on the Basic Wind speed and other building parameters as per
MBMA 1974 / 1986 editions , UBC 91 or BS CP3 1972. The Building height used is the maximum
of the right or left Eave height.
However other codes may be used by providing the wind Load on each member.
6. Design Module:
The ASFAD Design Module performs Design check as per AISC Ninth edition 1989 or BS 5950
Part 1 : 1990. All the Sections within a Members are checked Segment by Segment and the most
critical point within the section is reported for Bending & Axial stresses , Shear stresses &
Deflections.
Since Members are non-prismatic elements the Critical Buckling Load is determined for the whole
Member using numerical integration techniques. This will simulate the actual Buckling behaviour
of the non-prismatic Member accurately rather than analyzing the Member at each segment
individually which does not take into effect the interaction of all Segments when they behave as one
Member.
