F Read the article about internships. Circle True or False for each statement.
Internships
When you are a student, you want to get a job but you might not have experience. Unfortunately, all the good
jobs require experience. So how can you get experience if no employer will hire you? One solution is to do a
summer internship. This is when someone works for a company or organization in order to get experience in a
particular type of work. Interns often receive no money for their work. If they do receive a salary, it is usually very
low.
So, why would you work for nothing or almost nothing? Well, the main reason is to get experience in the career
you’re interested in. This experience will look great on your résumé. Another reason is to make contacts in your
chosen profession. If your coworkers see that you can do good work, they might recommend you to a colleague
at another company. And if the managers like the way an intern works, they sometimes offer the intern a job
with a salary when the internship finishes.
If you are working without a salary, you will probably have to find another job to pay for your food and rent.
Students often work in bars and restaurants. If you are doing your internship in another country, this is an
excellent way to improve your language skills.
One result of doing an internship is that you may discover that the profession you are in isn’t as interesting as
you thought. This means that when you return home, you can focus your attention on something different.
That’s why they call it a learning experience!
Clearly, internships can be a great way of exploring the world of work. They provide excellent learning
experiences that you don’t have to pay for as well as offering opportunities to develop helpful new relationships.
