DANCE
Folk Dances
Oldest form of dance. Inherited
tradition passed on from generation to
generation.

Festival Dances
Performed by community to celebrate
fiestas, and other occasions.
Modern Dance
Highly expressive style of dance that
challenges the structure dance technique
(focuses on the emotion of dancers)
Contemporary Dance
Fuses together many dance styles such as
ballet, jazz modern and lyrical.
(focuses on creating new techniques)
Ballet
Highly technical form of dance with its own
vocabulary.

Social / Ballroom Dance


Shared between one male who “lead” and one female
who “follow”. Ballroom is a formal and performed in
competitions while social dance are more casual.
Hip-hop Dance

a style of street dance form that


evolved from hip hop culture

DANCE TERMS
Clockwise – Moving any part of the body such
as the hands, arms, and shoulders like the
motion of a clock.

Counter - clockwise – Reverse direction of the


motion of the hands a clock.
Set – A dance formation like a square or a
unit formation composed of two or more
pairs.

Hands on Waist - Place hands at the


waistline, knuckles in, fingers pointing in
rear.
Brush – With weight on one foot, hit the floor
with the ball or heel of the other foot after
which that foot is lifted from the floor to any
direction.

Cut – Displace one foot with the other, thus


completely taking off the weight of the body
from the displaced foot.
Hop - Spring from one foot and land on
the same foot in place or in any direction.
The other foot may be raised in any
direction

Jump – Spring on one foot or both feet


and land on both in any direction

POSITION
First Position
Arms - encircled in front at chest level, relaxed,
fingers slightly apart
Feet - closed and heels parallel. Touching toes at 45
degrees
Second Position
Arm - raised sideways a little below
shoulder level
Feet - is Open parallel stride sideward
Third Position
Arm - One arm encircles overhead and
the other raised sideways
Feet - Heel of one foot is at instep.
Fourth Position
Arm - One arm encircles like first position, the
other arm over head.
Feet - One foot forward with heel of front foot
inline with big toe of rear foot
Fifth Position
Arms - Both arms overhead
Feet - Heel of front foot close to big toe of
rear foot
