Lesson 1 Context Clues
TARGET
At the end of this lesson, learners are able to:
 identify the context clues use in the sentences;
 use context clues to find meanings of unfamiliar words; and
 classify the types of context clues in the context.

Context clues are clues to a word’s meaning provided by the sentence or passage in which the word is
used.
The context of a word could be the sentence itself, its surrounding words, or the situation in which the word
appears. Usually the context of a word gives clues to meaning rather than an actual definition.

A context clue is there to help you find out the meaning of unfamiliar words in a sentence. It could be
through giving the definition of the words or through giving examples.
