THE IMPACT OF USING GADGETS AS A LEARNING TOOL

IN STUDYING AMONG THE GRADE TEN STUDENTS

OF MEGABYTE COLLEGE FOUNDATION INC.
A Research Study Presented to the Junior High School Faculty
Megabyte College Foundation Inc.
Floridablanca, Pampanga
CHAPTER 1:
The Problem and its Background
INTRODUCTION
Using gadgets as a learning tool in studying has a significant impact on
students' academic performance, engagement, and learning. But it also
presents challenges such as distraction and over-dependence, making
it essential to carefully consider the balance between the benefits and
disadvantages of gadget use in education.

With over billions of population, youth has the most power in using the
technology, especially students. They have a lot of access and
applicable guidelines to manipulate the technology. They use gadgets
as a tool whereas it is beneficial to them, they can search for and access
educational materials, research, and other relevant information from
the internet. This access to information can help students to better
understand and grasp concepts, and it also encourages independent
learning.
INTRODUCTION
Gadgets have transformed the way students learn, making education
more accessible, engaging, and convenient. This has led to a shift from
traditional teaching methods to a more digital and interactive
approach. While there are potential drawbacks to excessive use of
technology, the benefits of using gadgets in education are undeniable.

When using gadgets, students can be exposed to cyber-security risks

such as phishing, hacking, and identity theft. These risks can lead to
loss of personal information, financial harm, and other serious
consequences. The overuse of gadgets can lead to social isolation as
students spend more time in virtual environments rather than
engaging in face-to-face interactions with their peers and teachers.
While the use of gadgets as a learning tool has its benefits, it is
essential to be aware of the potential negative impacts and to take
steps to mitigate them.
INTRODUCTION
Gadgets can be a valuable tool in education, allowing students to
access information, engage with their studies, and collaborate with
their peers. When used responsibly and in a way that promotes
learning, gadgets can enhance students' academic success and
prepare them for the technology-driven world.

However, it's also important to note that using gadgets as a learning

tool should be done in a balanced and controlled way. Too much screen
time can have negative effects on students' health and wellbeing, so it's
important to ensure that they take breaks and engage in physical
activities as well. Additionally, gadgets should be used responsibly and
in a way that promotes academic success.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Many students nowadays do their academic research using devices
such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones. The government of the
Philippines has recognized the potential benefits of technology or the
use of gadgets in education, it has worked to integrate it into
classrooms to improve student learning. However, it is still unclear
whether gadgets actually help students with their studies or have a
negative impact on their mental health.

In this research, we aim to study the impact of gadgets on the

academic performance of Grade 10 students at MCFI. We will explore
the pros and cons of using gadgets in education. Our findings may help
educators to improve the use of gadgets in the classroom and to help
Grade 10 students understand the importance of gadgets in their
studies and research.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
It is important to note that gadget use may also lead to negative effects
such as obsession, addiction, and distraction. Additionally, we will look
into the positive and negative aspects of gadget use in education in
order to gain a more complete understanding of its impact.

Overall, this study will contribute to a better understanding of the

impact of gadgets on student learning and may provide
recommendations on how to optimize the use of technological devices
inside the classroom.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
The scope of researching the impact of gadgets as a learning tool
among students can be quite broad, including many aspects of their
academic and personal lives. This research appears at how gadgets
affect the studies of the grade ten students of Megabyte College
Foundation Inc.

This study will not cover any concerns that are not related to any other
grade level other than grade ten and have no relevance to how
students learn in relation to gadgets. Furthermore, the study will look
into the various types of gadgets that students use, the quantity with
which they use them, and the effects on their behavior and learning.
CHAPTER 2:
Review of Related Literatures
The use of gadgets as learning tools has gained significant attention in
recent years due to advancements in technology and its integration
into education. This review aims to explore the impact of using
gadgets, such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops, as learning tools.
By examining relevant literature, this review will provide insights into
the benefits and drawbacks associated with gadget-based learning, as
well as its effects on student engagement, academic performance, and
overall learning outcomes.

All gadgets were not created equal. In fact most inventions are built on
the newest technology. Innovation in the world of education requires
that learning be more meaningful and quality. It also aims to direct
according to the needs of the rolling and the beat of the times.
An educator using various technologies in the process of teaching and
learning activities that are useful to enhance the effectiveness of
teaching and learning in the classroom. Utilization of gadgets in
learning at school plays an important role as a source of learning and
support the process of learning to be comfortable, so that the creation
of learning process that is effective and efficient to improve student
learning outcomes. (D. Ratnasari, 2019).

According to Budiharto (2020), it is not surprising that gadgets in this

era are much liked by children. Because gadgets in the current era
have turned into interesting items, especially in touchscreen
technology and have also been equipped with various applications that
attract attention, especially in students. The use of gadgets among
children and adults, there are various purposes for someone using
gadgets, for example to find information or just to play games.
Generally, we see kids replicating what they see or hear. Electronic
gadgets like TVs, mobiles, and laptops show various kinds of
entertainment shows and much other violent stuff. It’s important for
students to recognize how their use of electronic devices affects their
behavior. If you notice that you become more aggressive or irritable
after spending a certain amount of time on your digital devices, try to
limit your use or take breaks. (Kopykitab by Monica, 2023)

Everywhere in education, from the small rural of K-12 school district to

the large metropolitan college of higher education, mobile technology
is being considered, implemented, and then looked at again for further
implementation. The number of new and current mobile wireless
technologies implemented for the direct impact of student learning is
staggering. Universities in the United States reveal that 90 percent of
public universities and 80 percent of private universities have some
level of mobile wireless technology. (Swett, 2012)
Peter (Nashwa, 2015) stated that the mobility of these devices enables
learning both in formal and non-formal settings as we do not need
fixed locations for study, and consequently our way of learning
becomes different. Graddol (Salmah, 2016) commented that
“technology lies at the heart of the globalization process, affecting
work, education and culture”. With the wide spread of phones,
computers and mobile devices now fit in our pockets, it becomes very
easy to connect to a variety of information sources and communicate
with anyone in any place everywhere we go.

In addition, Alhafeez (2017) states that “using and integrating some

technological devices may motivate students as well as teachers to do
their traditional jobs in different and attractive ways”.
The literature review highlights the potential benefits and challenges
associated with using gadgets as learning tools. While gadgets can
enhance student engagement, provide personalized learning
experiences, and broaden access to information, careful attention must
be paid to mitigate distractions, address equity issues, and promote
students' health and well-being. Furthermore, gadget-based learning
has the potential to improve academic performance and foster
essential skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-
solving. Future research should focus on exploring effective strategies,
addressing concerns, and assessing the long-term impact of gadget-
based learning on students' educational journey.
