A steam power station has an overall efficiency of 20% and 0.6 kg of coal is burnt per kWh of
electrical energy generated. Calculate the calorific value of fuel.
Exercise 2:
A thermal station has the following data:
 Maximum demand = 20,000 kW
 Load factor = 40%
 Boiler efficiency = 85%
 Turbine efficiency = 90%
 Coal consumption = 0·9 kg/kWh
 Cost of 1 ton of coal = 151 $
Question 1: Determine the thermal efficiency.
Question 2: Determine the annual coal bill.
Exercise 3:
A 100 MW steam station uses coal of calorific value 6400 kcal/kg. Thermal efficiency of the
station is 30% and electrical efficiency is 92%. Calculate the coal consumption per hour when
the station is delivering its full rated output.

Exercise 4:

Question 2: Plot the input/output characteristic for each plant.
Question 3: Plot the heat rate characteristic for each plant.
Question 4: Assuming the Fuel cost is 110 $/ton, calculate the Incremental Production Cost for
each plant. The calorific value of the fuel in the two plants is 5600 Kcal/Kg.
Take into consideration only the maintenance cost as 10% of the Incremental Fuel Cost.
