Fall 2019 Math 220/CME 302: Practice Midterm

This is a closed books, notes, etc. exam.

You may cite without proof any results proven in lectures, or in the textbook, provided that you are not
explicitly asked to prove them.
Please use one blue book for problems 1-3; and use another blue book for problems 4 and 5.
Answer all questions. Each question is worth 20 points.

1. Solve the PDE ux + yuy = y 2 with the initial condition u(0, y) = sin y.
2. Let f be a C 1 function and ι : C(Rn ) → D0 (Rn ) be the usual map. Prove that

∂xi ιf = ι∂xi f .

[As part of your answer you should define ∂xi ιf .]

3. (a) Given u ∈ D0 (Rn ) and g ∈ C ∞ (Rn ). Define the distribution gu. [You only need to write down
the definition without proving that it is a distribution.]
(b) Let u ∈ D0 (R). Prove that if xu = 0, then u = cδ0 for some constant c ∈ R.
4. Consider the initial value problem ut + uux = 0 and u(0, x) = φ(x), where φ : R → R is a piecewise
continuous function.
(a) Define what it means for a piecewise continuous function u to be a weak solution to this problem.
(
1, if x < at
(b) Find (with proof) a constant a ∈ R such that u(t, x) = is a weak solution to
0, if x > at
(
1, if x < 0
the problem with φ(x) = .
0, if x > 0

5. Consider the initial boundary problem value for the wave equation in a bounded domain Ω with smooth
boundary ∂Ω:  2 2 2

 −∂tt u + ∂xx u + ∂yy u = 0 in Ω,

u(0, x, y) = φ(x, y) in Ω,
(1)
(∂t u)(0, x, y) = ψ(x, y) in Ω,

u ∂Ω = 0,

where φ and ψ are smooth function.

(a) Suppose u is a C 2 solution to (1). Prove that E(t) = [(∂t u)2 + (∂x u)2 + (∂y u)2 ](t, x, y) dx dy
R
2 Ω
is independent of t.
(b) Deduce that if u(1) and u(2) are two solutions to (1), then u(1) ≡ u(2) .
