Communication Challenges in Multicultural Settings – Erica

COMMUNICATION IN MULTICULTURAL SETTINGS is the ability to understand and appreciate different

cultures, as well as to communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds.

SIX KEY BARRIERS FOR CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS

1.ETHNOCENTRISM

We all have a natural tendency to look at other cultures through our own lenses.

2. STEREOTYPING

It’s also common to rely on oversimplified clichés about people from

different cultures.
3. PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS

To manage cross-cultural teams successfully, you need to flex your own style.

4. LANGUAGE BARRIERS

All teams have a common language, but when some people are more fluent than others, it creates social
distance between members.

5. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTANCE

In global virtual teams, people don’t get the chance to interact and build
relationships with each other as in a traditional office environment

6. CONFLICTING VALUES

Culture is like an iceberg: what you see are the behaviours, and those are influenced by the invisible
values under the water line.
IMPACT OF BARRIER IN COMMUNICATION

They can cause misunderstanding that lead to conflict, frustration, offense, violence, hurt feelings, and
wasting time, effort, money and lives of the people.

Stereotyping - A Barrier In Communication

We communicate with strangers in a way that is directly impacted by the stereotypes we have. The first
assumptions we make about the behavior of strangers will inevitably be based on preconceived notions
about their culture, race, or ethnicity.

What does Stereotype Mean?

A stereotype is a generalized opinion of a certain group of people. It is a presumption that individuals

may hold regarding every member of a specific group. Expectations can be of several kinds, such as
those regarding a group's personality, interests, appearance, or skill.

Why are Stereotypes Formed?

We categorize people unconsciously based on their looks, their sex, and their nationality.

Types of Stereotypes

1. Age Stereotypes

2. Gender Stereotypes

3. Race And Ethnicity Stereotypes

4. (Dis)Ability Stereotypes

5. Political Stereotypes

6. Religious Stereotypes

7. Social -Class Stereotypes

8. Nationality Stereotypes

Cross-Cultural Communication Skills - JARED

-Cross-cultural communication can be defined as a dialogue or any kind of interaction (both verbal and
non-verbal) between people of different nationalities.

-It is an essential soft skill because it can make or break personal and business relationships. It is also
critical for improving international relations and furthering a vision of achieving global peace.

Diversity and inclusion

-are two interconnected concepts—but they are far from interchangeable. Diversity focuses on
representation or the make-up of an entity. Inclusion is about how well the contributions, presence, and
perspectives of different groups of people are valued and integrated into an environment
