- Type of drive: electric motor, connected to the gearbox input shaft by means of V-belt drive.
-First stage (input stage): spiral bevel gear pair, case hardened
-Second stage (intermediate): planetary gear stage: sun wheel and planet gears are spur
gears, case hardened; annular ring gear is gas nitrided.
-Third stage (output stage): planetary gear stage: sun wheel and planet gears are spur
gears, case hardened; annular ring gear is gas nitrided.
-Bearings arrangement: rolling bearing SKF or equivalent ( SNR, KOYO, TIMKEN, FAG)
- Output: The output shaft of this gearbox has a flanged end designed to be connected
through a coupling joint* (*excluded from our supply) to the mixer shaft. The output bearing of
the gearbox do not bear the radial load arising from operation of the mixer (Permissible loads
are indicated on DWG 9PLDC03). Therefore the mixer shaft must be supported autonomously.
The coupling joint is necessary to allow angular and axial misalignment and the bending of
the mixer shaft under load without loads transfer to the gearbox.
- Input: The input shaft is a solid shaft with parallel key. The V-belt drive pulley shall be
connected to the shaft through a taper bush. An adapting flange is used for connection of the
cardan shaft to the pulley. (* the V-belt pulley subassy and adapting flange can be supplied by
Cobra with the supplementary description when ordering: pulley included)
- Oil pump connection: this gearbox can be supplied with an output drive shaft and
connecting flange for an oil pump.

shaft. The output section of the gearbox includes a spherical joint and an output bearing
designed to carry the radial load arising from operation of the mixer (Permissible loads are

1.6) 9PLDC18 160 KW - Technical description
- Type of drive: electric motor, connected to the gearbox input shaft by means of V-belt drive.
-First stage (input stage): spiral bevel gear pair, case hardened
-Second stage (intermediate): planetary gear stage: sun wheel and planet gears are spur
gears, case hardened; annular ring gear is gas nitrided.
-Third stage (output stage): planetary gear stage: sun wheel and planet gears are spur

The coupling joint is
necessary to allow angular and axial misalignment and the bending of the mixer shaft under
load without loads transfer to the gearbox.
The output bearing of the gearbox do not bear the radial load arising from operation of the
mixer (Permissible loads are indicated on DWG 9PLDC18). Therefore the mixer shaft must be
supported autonomously.
- Oil pump connection: this gearbox is without output drive shaft and connecting flange for
an oil pump.
The safety ratio is an index which should be considered for the choice of the gearbox during
the mixer design, it is defined as follows:
Where
P = Mixer total installed power (kw) = Motor power (kw) * number of motors installed
Mr1 = Gearbox reference input torque = P (kw) / 2 * 9549 / 1475
Mr2 = Gearbox reference output torque = Mr1 * i * η
Mx2 = Gearbox maximum allowable static torque ( this is a characteristic of the gearbox size)
i = gearbox reduction ratio
η= gearbox efficiency = 0,9
It is necessary to consider that , due to the fact that the two gearboxes installed on the mixer
are linked by the cardan shaft, it could theoretically happen that, for a short time:
A) The power of two electric motors goes through only one of the two gearboxes,
B) The two electric motors provide the peak output torque which is Kp times the nominal
torque.
Mpeak1 = Mr1 * 2 * Kp
Mpeak2 = Mr2 * 2 * Kp
Considering that the gearbox allowable maximum torque (peak) is Mx2, to avoid damage to the
gearbox it should be:
Assuming Kp = 2,7 , to guarantee that, under conditions A) and B), the gearbox allowable
maximum torque is not exceeded, the safety ratio should be :
However the simultaneous presence of the conditions at points A) and B) is very unlikely and,
since now, as far as we know, it has not occurred on mixing plants.
On the basis of our experience, the range of the safety ratio from 1 to 5,4 and more can be
splitted as follows, by way of indication and not as a substitute of judgement.
COBRA
Safety ratio range Safety level
S > 5,4 Very High
3,5 ≤ S < 5,4 High
2,9 ≤ S < 3,5 Optimal range
2,4 ≤ S < 2,9 Medium - Low
2 ≤ S < 2,4 Low
S<2 Very Low

4) LUBRICATION
In severe applications, where gear units are to operate under heavy loads, in continuous duty or
when it is required to increase the oil change interval , the ambient temperature range and/or
reduce oil temperature, synthetic Poly-Alpha-Olefin (PAO) having the ISO viscosity-grade
indicated in the table are the preferred choice.
Routine checking during operation: carry out the level check with the gearbox at rest.
At Startup, at oil changing or at oil topping up: Let the gearbox run for some minutes, stop it
and wait some minutes before checking the oil level.
The degree of purity of the oil affects the operating reliability and life span of the oil and the
gearbox. It should therefore be ensured that the oil in the gearbox is clean.
When changing oil of the same type, the quantity of oil remaining in the gearbox should be kept
as low as possible. Generally speaking, a small remaining quantity will cause no particular
problems. Gear oils of different types and manufacturers must not be mixed.
When changing to very different types of oil or oils with very different additives, the gearbox
must always be well flushed out with the new oil. Residues of old oil must be completely
removed from the gearbox.
Gear oils must never be mixed with other substances. Flushing with paraffin or other solvents is
not permitted, as traces of these substances always remain inside the gearbox
4.4) Draining
To drain, remove the magnetic drain plug and drain off oil. If possible, drain while the oil is hot
and remove the filler plug from the top of the gearbox to give optimum oil flow
4.5) Filling
Fill the gearbox when it is assembled and secured in its working position on the mixer.
Unscrew the oil filler-breather plug.
Use an hosepipe or a spout to fill the oil. Do not close completely the filling hole on the
gearbox, as the air must go out from the same hole during the filling.
Add oil until it is visible in the level window. Check that the filler-breather plug is not blocked by
dirt or paint. Screw the oil filler-breather plug
Start the gearbox and let it run for a short time. Stop the gearbox, wait some minutes and
check again the oil level. If necessary add / remove oil and repeat these operations until the oil
level is reached.
5) STORAGE
5.2) Always place boards in wood or other material between floor and products, to avoid direct
contact with the floor;
5.3) For storage periods of over 60 days, all machined surfaces such as flanges, shafts and
couplings must be protected with a suitable antioxidation producs (SHELL ENSIS FLUIDSDC
or equivalent product);
5.4) The following measures must be taken for products for which the expected storage period
exceeds 6 months:
5.4.1)Cover outer machined parts and mating parts with grease to avoid oxidation;
5.4.2) Position the gearboxes with the breather plug up and fill them with oil.
Before use, the gearboxes should be filled with the proper amount of lubricant of the
recommended type.
5.4.3) For longer periods of storage (> 6 months) we advise regular checking. The output shaft must
be rotated at least one turn to change the position of the rolling element in the bearings and to avoid
sticking of seals rings. The input shaft must not come to a standstill in the same position as before
rotation. This procedure must be repeated and documented every 6 months until start-up.
