Profile of a Key Person of the Hebrew Scriptures - 1

Name of Key Person:

Samuel

The ‘world’ BEHIND the Text:

Where and when did they live?
vv
Samuel lived in Ramah in
Israel during the 11th
century BC. He was raised
by Eli a Jewish priest. Eli
was the priest of Shiloh so
Samuel was reasonably
wealthy

Where are they mentioned in the Bible? Identify which Book of the Bible, and
describe briefly what this Book is about.

Samuel is mentioned in 1
and 2 Samuel which was
thought to be written by
himself (and others). it is
about Israel’s transition
from a bunch of tribes led by
prophets,
to a unified kingdom ruled
by kings.

The ‘world’ OF the Text:

Provide a brief summary of their story:

Hannah, had not been able to have children. She asked for a child from God and
promised to dedicate her child to God, soon she became pregnant and gave birth to
Samuel. She gave him to Eli, the high priest of Shiloh. While Samuel was sleeping
one night, the Lord spoke to him. Samuel heard the voice of God three times
before he realised that it was God speaking to him. Samuel became a prophet of
the Lord. Samuel had two sons, Joel and Abijah, who grew up to be prophets, but
unfortunately, they both became corrupt. The people asked that a king be
appointed and God guided Samuel to appoint the first king of Israel, Saul. Saul
disregarded religious advice from Samuel and God told Samuel to choose a new
king as Saul had considered himself above God. Samuel chose a Shepard named
David

Why is this person a significant character of the Hebrew Scriptures?

Samuel was powerful and well respected. Samuel’s covenant with God was
instrumental in implementing the first King of Israel, Saul, which created the
transition from judges of rouge tribes, to a more unified kingdom ruled by a single
king. This way the Israelites were better able defend against philistines with
military weapons.

The ‘world’ IN FRONT OF the Text:

How is this person’s story and/or writings an inspiration to believers today?

Samuel’s story is inspirational and important today. It tells us that no one is more
powerful than God and that even great leaders and those in power should take time
to contemplate God, and his wishes. They should lead without being corrupt and
thinking of their people first.

A government with integrated religion can help the community be more religious
by providing funds for churches and places of worship and religious education in
schools.

It also teaches us that even if you don’t at first recognise God, He is always talking
to us and willing to answer our prayers, like he did for Hannah.

Profile of a Key Person of the Hebrew Scriptures - 2

Name of Key Person:

David

The ‘world’ BEHIND the Text:

Where and when did they live?
David lived in Bethlehem in
the 11th century BC. He
came from a large family
with seven brothers. His
father was a sheep farmer
and so David was very poor
and spent most of his free
time tending to his father’s
sheep

Where are they mentioned in the Bible? Identify which Book of the Bible, and
describe briefly what this Book is about.

David is mentioned in 1 and

2 Samuel which is about the
transition from a bunch of
tribes led by prophets to a
unified kingdom ruled by
kings. David was the second
king appointed by Samuel.
The ‘world’ OF the Text:
Provide a brief summary of their story:

During the time of King Saul’s rule, the Philistines were the enemies of Israel and
had sophisticated weaponry and army. In particular, a Philistine giant named
Goliath, was feared by all. Goliath proposed a challenge to the Israelites that if
someone could defeat him in combat, the Philistines would surrender. No Israelite
was brave enough to accept the challenge. Soon a young Israelite named David, a
small sheep farmer offered to fight the giant. The Israelites did not believe he could
ever defeat Goliath. When the day came for the fight, David faced Goliath and
using his slingshot he fired a single shot to the giant’s head, knocking him out. He
then cut of the giant’s head and displayed it to the philistines, before presenting it
to King Saul. He was declared a national hero. David enlisted in the military soon
after and became good friends with King Saul. He was very successful in military
campaigns, although this made Saul jealous and concerned that David would try to
usurp him. Saul tried to kill David multiple times, after the last of which, David
fled to the mountains and met with Samuel who told David he would be King. After
Saul was killed in battle, David took his place as King, where he ruled successfully
increasing Israel’s land and resources and turned his people to God.
Why is this person a significant character of the Hebrew Scriptures?

David was an unlikely hero, at a time when the Israelites were being threatened by
the Philistine army. After defeating Goliath, he gave the Israelites hope. He was a
great warrior and a successful king. He founded the Judaean dynasty and as a
leader he integrated religion into the Israelite culture.

The ‘world’ IN FRONT OF the Text:

How is this person’s story and/or writings an inspiration to believers today?

The story of David and Goliath is inspirational today because it is a story of

overcoming impossible odds. David’s faith led him to overcome his enemies. He
used brains rather than brute strength. Despite being small, his faith led him to be
brave in facing his enemy. This tells us that we can overcome challenges in life
with some courage and faith in God.

Part B (100-150 words)

Compare and contrast the life/story/message of your 2 chosen Old Testament
figures.
Examples to write about include:
- What is similar about their life/story/message?
- What are the key differences in their life/story/message?
- How did their life/story/message impact the Jewish faith?

Samuel and David lived in the same era, they both lived in the 11th century BC in
Israel. Samuel lived quite comfortably with lots of food, however, David grew up
in poverty on a farm and worked hard just to survive. Samuel was raised by the
priest, Eli, with his mother only visiting once a year to give him new clothes,
while David was surrounded with family as he grew up with his father and his 7
brothers. Both David and Samuel believed in God and God helped them do
amazing things like killing a Philistine giant or converting the scattered tribes
into a sophisticated monarchy. Samuel was responsible for David becoming king
and he must have believed David was Godly and good. David was a successful
warrior, and as king, he unified many tribes under one rule and integrated
religion into the day to day lives of the Israelites.

Part C (100-150 words)

- Analyse in detail how ONE of your chosen Old Testament figure’s
life/story/message influenced the life and teachings of Jesus Christ?

David Made Israel more prosperous, he united the tribes under one ruler and
integrated religion into people’s daily lives. Jesus lived under the influence of
King David’s reign, all subsequent kings in the ancient first united Kingdom of
Israel and the later Kingdom of Judah claimed to be direct descendants of King
David. It is possible that without him, Jesus may not have even known about
God. Jesus was potentially inspired by David as well because David
encouraged people to listen to God more. Jesus also encouraged people to
believe in God. David and Jesus were both chosen by God.

Another reason David inspired Jesus was that he established many churches and
taught the community just like Jesus. Both Jesus and David were brave and
they didn’t back down to bullies, and even when they were ridiculed, they were
faithful to God. For instance, when David defeated Goliath, he had to be brave
because Goliath was a far stronger opponent. Jesus had to be brave when he
was persecuted and nailed to the cross. Jesus and David both took on a
responsibility of spreading the word of God and encouraging others to do so.
