ASSIGNMENT QUESTION
According to the United Nations (2015), a multinational corporation is "an enterprise which owns or
controls production or service facilities outside the country in which it is based, and are those
companies whose management, ownership and controls are spread in more than one foreign
country". Thus, a multinational corporation carries on business operations in two or more
countries. Its headquarters are located in one country (home country) but its activities are spread
over other countries (host countries). Multinational corporations may engage in various activities
like exporting, importing, and manufacturing in different countries. It may also lend its patents,
licenses, and managerial services to firms in host countries such as Nike, Coca-Cola, Wal-Mart,
Adidas, Toshiba, Honda and BMW.
Requirement
This assignment is designed to be a research-intensive activity, offering students the opportunity to
delve deeply into strategic analysis. To begin, each student is tasked with selecting a single
multinational corporation of their choice. Once the corporation is chosen, the primary objective is to
conduct a thorough examination of the company's current product strategy, taking into consideration
its product portfolio, market positioning, and competitive approach.
Following the assessment of the chosen corporation's product strategy, the next crucial step
involves applying Porter's Five Forces Model. This comprehensive framework aids in scrutinizing
various aspects of the corporation's competitive environment, encompassing factors such as
industry rivalry, supplier and buyer power, threats of new entrants, and the presence of substitute
products or services.
The ultimate goal of this assignment is to not only conduct a rigorous analysis but also to draw
meaningful insights. As such, students are expected to discuss the implications of their findings
from the application of Porter's Five Forces Model. This discussion should encompass how the
model influences and informs the multinational corporation's strategic planning, shedding light on
potential areas of competitive advantage, risk mitigation, and strategic adaptation. In essence, this
assignment serves as a platform for students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world business
scenarios, fostering a deeper understanding of strategic management.
