Direct and Reported Speech

Read the following selection. Transform the numbered sentences in the paragraph
from direct speech to indirect speech.

1The wide island of Panay was originally inhabited by Negritos or locally

called Ati tribe. 2Their disappearance is due to an innocent agreement they made with
the sultan of Borneo back in 1250 to give up their land in exchange of a hat and gold
necklace. 3Early in the 13th century, Marikudo, a native chieftain, sold the coastal
shores and lowlands to 10 Bornean Datus who escapes from the repression of Sri
Vishayan Empire. 4One of them named Paiburong received the area Irong-Irong,
which is now called Iloilo City, meaning nose-like, as its wide river mouth in the
narrow Guimaras Strait appears like a snout. 5The island lived peacefully until the
arrival of Juan Miguel de Legazpi in 1566 that discovered and developed more towns.

Let’s Learn

Direct Speech – is used when a person states a statement or thought on the original
actual words of the speaker.

Ex. I am going to the market.

Joe Biden won the 2021 US Elections
The second floor will be my office.

Indirect/Reported Speech – is used when a person expresses a statement or thought

of someone else but without using the speaker’s exact words. The verb of the sentence
is usually moved back to tense.

Ex. The old man asked the fireman if he had saved his nephew.

The father requested the teacher to allow him to go home.

Mr. Sharma ordered his assistant to meet in his office with the file.

Rules in transforming Direct speech to indirect speech:

1. Change the past tense of the verb. If the verb is in the simple past tense,
transform it into the past perfect tense.

Ex. Geeta cried, “I want those biscuits”

Geeta cried that she wanted those biscuits.

2. When a universal thought is expressed by the verb inside the quotation mark,
do not change the verb.

Ex. The teacher said, “Oil floats over water.”

The teacher said that oil floats over water.
3. Use pronouns correctly.

Ex. Hina said, “I won’t get up early in the morning tomorrow.”

Hina said that she would not get up early in the morning the next day.

Note: when the reporting verb is in the present or future tense, we do not
transform the tense of the verb inside the quotation marks.

4. Remove the quotation marks and question mark in the interrogative sentence.
Do not use “that.” Use “if” or “whether.” Use the given interrogative words:
what, when, where, why, who, whom, whose, which if the direct speech starts
with them. Change the reporter’s verb (say, said) into “ask” or “inquire” in its
correct tense.

Ex. The principal said, “I want everyone to attend the assembly.”

The principal said that she wanted everyone to attend the assembly.
