1 Are There Any Differences Between TESOL, TEFL, and TESL Methods?
In essence, the methodology of TEFL, TESOL, and TESL is the same. Whether you want to
teach English abroad or to teach in an English immersion program in North America, the
Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method prevails all over the world. In fact, the
CLT method can be used to teach any language! There are different approaches that
branch off CLT. The main ones are the Communicative Approach and Task-based
Learning, which are used in about 90% of English classes around the world.
The online TESOL / TEFL / TESL courses offered by OnTESOL will teach you to use a
variety of current lesson planning frameworks that are practical and effective for applying
CLT methods with different levels of language learners.
Whether you are planning to teach English abroad or in an English immersion program at
home, the textbook is often outdated and boring. In some countries, there isn’t even a
textbook to follow because students cannot afford one. Many teachers use authentic
materials without a communicative purpose and simply playing a song or a movie does
not entail that students are acquiring communicative competence.
For this reason, it is recommended taking a TESOL / TEFL / TESL certification course with
a strong focus on lesson planning and the Communicative Language Teaching method.
Those who know how to follow CLT lesson planning formats are able to teach grammar
and vocabulary lessons that integrate speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills.
In short, CLT lesson planning formats enable students to learn the rules of the English
language, while at the same time, being exposed to daily life contexts where the
respective language is used to communicate meaning. Rather than simply memorize
English rules, students learn by practicing their communication skills thanks to the CLT
method.
3 What’s The Difference Between the TESOL and TEFL Certificate Courses Offered by
OnTESOL?
The Advanced 120-hour TESOL Certificate provides the core skills that ESL teachers need
for adult ESL classes that are more prevalent in Canadian and US job markets for teaching
ESL immersion to international and newcomer students. This TESOL course is
academically equivalent to CELTA and meets TESL Canada requirements on completion
of the separate Practicum. This TESOL course also meets the minimum 120-hour TESOL /
TEFL / TESL requirement for ESL teaching jobs abroad and online.
The 168-hour Hybrid TEFL Certificate includes the Advanced 120-hour TESOL Certificate
course, the live 10-hour Lesson Planning Workshop, our two most popular specialist
modules on teaching young learners and teaching online, and a short specialist module
on teaching English in foreign countries to prepare you for more job opportunities. Save
CA$400/US$ 320 on this TEFL course package! Get TEFL certified to teach English
worldwide.
The minimum requirement for most jobs abroad is a 120-hour TESOL / TEFL / TESL
certificate, but not every course is built the same way.
Most online courses are introductory because they assess students via quick reflection
essays. Some courses cover lesson planning, but their participants will often have to
complete just one final assignment to receive the certificate. Furthermore, most
introductory courses lack grammar and phonology modules.
Our 168-hour Hybrid TEFL Certificate course is more comprehensive than CELTA
because it includes the 120-hour course, the 10-hour Lesson Planning Workshop and
3 specialists to prepare you for TEYL and online ESL teaching positions worldwide.
Our 250-hour TESOL Diploma includes a total of 7 lab assignments which provide
trainees with a more comprehensive understanding and set of skills to prepare them
for positions where they will be more involved in curriculum adaptation and
development.
The Course Activation e-mail will provide you with the name of your online tutor, who
will contact you within 24 hours and will introduce themselves as well as the course
material, expectations, assignments, final tests, the marking system and all information
pertaining the course.
If you have any queries and questions on the course material, have trouble with an
assignment or quiz or just want some kind of help, you can always contact your tutor
through your student account from Monday to Friday.
