1. Factors and conditions beyond our individual strengths, values, and needs play a
significant role in shaping our education and career/life paths. Family values and
parental expectations can influence the choices we make, as well as cultural norms
and societal expectations based on gender. Financial circumstances can be a
determining factor in accessing educational opportunities and pursuing specific career
paths. The influence of friends can impact decision-making, as peer relationships can
shape our aspirations and choices.
2. Global trends and needs, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
and the rights of Indigenous Peoples, can also shape our perspectives and drive us to
seek careers that contribute to addressing these challenges. Additionally, systemic
barriers and opportunities, including social, economic, and institutional factors, can
create challenges or open doors for different individuals.
3. To navigate these influences, it is crucial to consider how they align or conflict with our
personal values and goals. Discussing these factors with friends and family can
provide valuable insights and support in decision-making. Questions such as how
family expectations may impact career choices, how to balance personal interests with
practical considerations, and what financial supports are available for post-secondary
options are essential to consider when planning for our education and career/life
pathways. By understanding and addressing these factors, we can better overcome
barriers and pursue paths that align with our passions, values, and the global needs
we seek to address.
