Subject: Valve adjustment on all OHC engines with shim-type valve adjusters
Symptom: Code 25 (lean condition) or rough idle due to inadequate valve clearance
Source: Toyota service manuals
Valve clearance even slightly below the minimum specification may be the cause of the
above symptoms. For optimum results, valves should be adjusted so clearance is mid-range,
within the specification.
Valve adjustment on several Toyota overhead cam (OHC) engines is done by installing shims
of different thicknesses. You can calculate the correct shim thickness by using the formula in
Table TA005-1 and using the accompanying charts to select the correct intake or exhaust
valve shim.
Shims are available in 17 sizes in increments of 0.050 mm (0.0020 inch) from 2.500 mm
(0.0984 inch) to 3.300 mm (0.1299 inch). Toyota shim numbers are listed on the charts.
Refer to Table TA005-2 for intake valve clearance, and Table TA005-3 for exhaust valve
clearance.
