JUMPERS INTERNAL CONFIGURATIONS SECTION

1) INTRODUCTION

This chapter provides a guide to the various jumpers by a brief description of the main
modes of operation. The advanced setup procedure pages that follow provide a little more
information on each mode as well as providing some information on setting the EX15 up
accurately if the user has access to some test equipment.

We advise to the user that this section will only be able to be understood by qualified personnel and
who already has experience in this kind of equipment. The internal configurations of the EX15
can be modified in case the user understands that is really necessary the modification, once the
equipments made by Sinteck Next presents pre-defined configurations that will provide to the user
the best condition in the transmission or reception of them equipments.

We also inform that the configuration of these jumpers done erroneously it can causes undesirable
operation in the system which Sinteck Next doesn't take the responsibility.

Make sure the modification is really necessary before open the equipment.

2) QUICK GUIDE TO THE JUMPERS

There are altogether two jumpers sections on the EX15 which can be set - at the time of
installation - to establish the way the board operates.

The PC board leaves the factory with default settings which should be suitable for most
locations and requirements, Nevertheless, it is worth familiarizing the user with all the
options available, and checking that the settings are appropriate, as part of the installation
process.

The next page shows when is located each jumper, and the equivallent function of each one.

For a quick understandig, the following illustration shows what is a connected jumper
(position “ON”) and a disconnected jumper (position “ OFF”).

JUMPER 1&2: PRE-EMPHASIS 50µS OR 75µS

The default position is 75µs (50µs Europe)

What is pre-emphasis?
Pre-emphasis is the treble boost that must be applied to all FM broadcasts to compensate
for the treble cut (de-emphasis) present in every receiver. The aim of his process is to
reduce noise in the broadcast path without degrading the audio.

The precise nature of the treble boost is defined by a time-constant in microseconds, which
describes the resistor/capacitor network that will produce the appropriate 6dB per octave
treble boost curve.
There are two different standards in use worldwide.
In Europe and Africa, the standard is normally 50µs. This represents a lift of about 3dB at
3kHz, and 10dB at 10kHz. In the Americas, and in Japan, more boost is in use with a network
of 75µs, about 3dB up at 2kHz.

The jumper may either link the 75µs pins, the 50µs pins, or not link any pins, but be fixed to
just one of them for safekeeping, producing no pre-emphasis - 0µs.

The effects of pre-emphasis

The absence of any pre-emphasis will result in a broadcast sounding noticeably lacking in
treble. Applying 75µs pre-emphasis will correct the situation in American receivers (50µs
European receivers). If you apply 75µs pre-emphasis when 50µs is called for, the received
sound will have some 3dB shelved treble boost above 3kHz. This is undesirable.
Conversely, if you only apply 50µs where 75µs is required, there will be 3dB treble loss,
which is also undesirable. You should not have to change the pre-emphasis setting 50µs or
75µs or back unless you are relocating the installation abroad where the standar is different.

However, whenever pre-emphasis is deliberately applied to your audio at some point before

it enters the XLR socket on the back of the board, by an external processor for example,
then you must set the pre-emphasis to “0” or without any jumper, because pre-emphasis
must only be applied once. Double pre-emphasis must be avoided because it will make a
signal sound far too bright and toppy.

These jumpers doesn´t affect the operation of the board when external MPX is used.

Audio Processor Card installed

After installed the Audio Processor Card, turn on the EX15 to comprove if the card was
connected well, the following message will be shown in the initialization:

STATUS CHECKING:
AP:installed

If the message in the LCD is “not installed” do verify all connections between the Audio
Processor Card and the EX15 main board.

ADVANCED SETUP INFORMATION - A QUICK GUIDE FOR TRIMPOTS ON THE EX15 MINISTATION

The next page contains information about the map of trimpots on the EX15. This map was included in this manual as
advanced setup information and it is only to a simple understanding of the function of each trimpot and trimmer of the
EX15 boards.

Note the adjust of each trimpot and trimmer was made by qualified personnel in factory and any modification is not
permissed by Sinteck Next. All adjusts was made with high quality instruments and specified knowledge.

REMARK: If the user needs to change any parameter on the EX15 on these trimpots, SINTECK NEXT DOESN´T TAKE
THE RESPONSIBILITY, and guarantees that the best adjustment has been made.

TRIMPOTS AND FUNCTIONS:

1) Impedance coupler trimmer

This trimmer set the impedance output of BFG591 for 50 Ohms.

2) REF trimpot

This trimpot adjusts the DC voltage to the RF wattmeter on the LCD display, when it is measuring the REF RF power
output.

3) FWD trimpot

This trimmer adjusts the DC voltage to the RF wattmeter on the LCD display, when it is measuring the FWD RF power
output.

4) VPA trimpot

The voltage from the RF Board - VPA sensor - is adjusted by this trimpot to correct level that will be measured on the
LCD display.

5) IPA trimpot

The voltage from the RF Board - IPA sensor - is adjusted by this trimpot to correct level that will be measured on the LCD
display.

6) Temperature trimpot

The voltage from the RF Board - temperature sensor - is adjusted by this trimpot to correct level that will be measured
on the LCD display.

7) Fine Tune Trimmer

This trimmer is adjusted to set the fine tune of EX15. Precises frequencies like 98.00000MHz are adjusted here.

8) Carrier deviation trimpot

This trimpot adjusts the deviation of carrier. Note this trimpot is adjusted to 75kHz of carrier deviation. If the user intends
that this modulation is less than necessary, a new adjust may be made.

9) 19kHz synchronism leveler trimpot

The pilot tone level that is present on the 19kHz output for RDS encoders is adjusted by this trimpot. It is set to 1Vpp.

10) Bias RD15 trimpot

This trimpot adjusts the DC voltage of the BIAS on the RD15HVF1 transistor. Generally, this DC voltage is set in 2,75V.

Advanced Setup Information: Fuses changing
EX15 MiniStation - 15W Broadband FM Stereo Exciter

CHANGING FUSES

The EX15 has 2 fuses: 1 externally and 1 internally.

The fuse located externally would be damaged if the mains voltage is more than 265V. The
gas discharger and varistor bank will short-circuit the AC and this fuse will be open. It is
extremelly important to keep the same current specified in for this section, the fuse MUST
BE 2A, this is the protection of your transmitter.
Never change this fuse for others of more current.

The following illustration shows where is located this fuse:

IEC Socket

The fuse located internally is the fuse responsible for protect the RF Stage of EX15. If there
is a short-circuit in this section, like for example a damage in the RF MOSFET this fuse will
open, protecting the Step-down converter in the main SMPS board. The current of this fuse
is 2A, never may be replaced for fuse of more current.
