Transferring the Design to Fabric

There are several ways of transferring the pattern onto the fabric.

Method 1 – Printable Sticky Fabri-Solvy: Use printable Sticky Fabri-Solvy –

the Sulky brand has been used for the purpose of this pattern. Firstly,
place a sheet of the stabiliser into the paper tray of a printer and print
the pattern as per normal. Cut a square around the design, just large
enough to encompass the whole design. Peel the backing off and
place the design onto the fabric in the position where the embroidery is
to be sewn. Once the stitching has been completed, carefully trim the
excess Fabri-Solvy from around the outside of the design. Next,
submerge the work into warm water and agitate for 2 – 3 minutes. If
using a dark fabric base, it is suggested to leave the work submerged
for at least 5 minutes. Once this has been done, remove the fabric and
drain the water. Replace the water with fresh, clean, warm water and
allow it to soak for another few minutes. It is imperative that all Fabri-
Solvy residue is removed or the embroidery work may become slightly
stiff once dry. This option is not only the easiest and quickest way to
transfer the design, but has added the benefit of stabilising the fabric
for stitching.

www.peonypatterns.com
#peonypatterns #peonypatternscarnation #carnationembroidery
Page | 7
Method 2 – Washable Tracing Paper: Use washable one-sided tracing
paper. Place the fabric right side up, then place the tracing paper on
top, with the transferable side facing down. Using a printed copy of the
pattern and a pen, carefully but firmly trace over the design. This will
transfer a copy of the design onto the fabric. When the design stitching
has been completed, spray lightly with stain remover and leave it soak
in warm water until all the marks are removed. Air dry the embroidery.

www.peonypatterns.com
#peonypatterns #peonypatternscarnation #carnationembroidery
Page | 8
Method 3 – Tracing: Print the design onto plain paper. Using a
removable sewing marker or water-soluble pen/pencil, trace the
pattern onto the fabric using a window, tablet or light box. To remove
the marks after stitching, follow the manufacturer’s instructions that are
supplied for the sewing marker or water-soluble pen/pencil that has
been used. Air dry the embroidery. Always test the marker and removal
method on a scrap piece of fabric prior to starting the project.

Preparing the Hoop

If embroidering onto linen or a lightweight fabric, it is suggested to prep

the fabric with fusible interfacing before placing the fabric into the
hoop.

Separate the two pieces of the hoop.

Place the smaller, inside hoop on a flat surface and place the fabric
over the smaller hoop. Centre the design.

Place the larger hoop over the smaller hoop and press it down to
secure the fabric between them. Tighten the screw on the larger hoop
to further secure the fabric between the two hoops. The fabric should
be taut, but not stretched.

Finishing the Project

Iron out any wrinkles around the pattern that may have appeared
whilst stitching. Be careful not to iron over any threads, as the heat may
cause the threads to melt.

Garment

If the embroidery is being used as a design feature on a garment, trace

and cut the pattern piece onto a folded piece of baking paper, in the
same manner as cutting the piece out of a folded piece of fabric.

Lay the baking paper pattern piece onto a piece of fabric and trace
the outline of the baking paper template onto the fabric. Position the
embroidery design template inside the pattern piece outline, taking
into account the seam allowance required for the pattern piece. Once
the design has been stitched, cut the bodice template out, prior to
soaking.

Hoop

If the finished embroidery design is to be displayed in a hoop, a hoop

backing will need to be created. Using the smaller, inner hoop as a
guide, trace around the outer edge of this inner hoop onto a piece of
felt.

Cut the circle out.

www.peonypatterns.com
#peonypatterns #peonypatternscarnation #carnationembroidery
Page | 13
Place the embroidery back into the hoop, ensuring that it is accurately
centred. Trim the fabric approximately 5/8” (1.6cm) from the hoop.
Tip: Use pinking shears to reduce fraying.

Using a strand of floss approximately 35” (90cm) long, weave the

thread along the raw edge of the circle of fabric. Pull the thread tight
to gather the fabric and tie the thread off.

www.peonypatterns.com
#peonypatterns #peonypatternscarnation #carnationembroidery
Page | 14
This creates a ‘lip’ or ‘edge’ along the fabric. Place the glue around
the lip/edge.

Locate the felt circle, created earlier, and press it onto the back of the
fabric lip/edge. Allow the glue to dry.

Threading Instructions

It is recommended to start with six strand embroidery floss, such as the

brand DMC or similar. Follow the guide below for the number of strands
required, and if they need to be single or double, for each specific
stitch type.

Page | 16
Locate the floss to be used and cut it approximately 25” (63.5cm) in
length. Separate the cut piece of floss into the quantity of strands
required for the stitch type being embroidered. Thread the needle – a
needle threader can be used if desired. Tie the strands using the Stitch
Type chart, on the previous page, as a guide.

If the instructions call for the floss to be tied as double; one thread
becomes two, two threads become four, etc. Tying the thread in this
manner assists in keeping it neat, and stops the thread from slipping out
of the needle.

In the instance that the pattern calls for an odd number of strands,
thread the needle with the required number of strands. Once a small
tail of threads has been threaded through the eye of the needle, tie a
knot in the longer tail of strands.

Stitch Information

For this embroidery design, a needle which has the same thickness as
the eye for almost the entire needle, such as straw or milliners’ needle,
is required for any french knot stitches. A size 10 embroidery needle will
be used for the remaining stitch types.

Petite Button Embroidery

If the petite button embroidery is being stitched, it is recommended

that the open heart is stitched first using stem stitch.

Stitch Guide

French Knot

A french knot is best created using a straw or milliner’s needle. Using a

total of 6 single strands of floss, thread and tie off the strands at one
end. Bring the needle through from the underside of the hoop.

Pinch the floss a short distance from where it comes up through the
fabric and hold it taut. Place the needle in front of the floss. Wind the
floss around the needle twice, whilst still holding the thread taut.

www.peonypatterns.com
#peonypatterns #peonypatternscarnation #carnationembroidery
Page | 29
Reinsert the tip of the needle next to where it came through on the
front of the fabric, without pulling the needle all way through. Do not
reinsert the needle into the same point or the knot will be lost! With the
hand that is free, tug the floss downward so that the floss tightens and
makes a small coil against the fabric.

Whilst holding the coil snuggly in position, push the needle back
through the fabric, drawing the thread all the way through and tie off
the floss. A small french knot will be created.

one end. Bring the needle up through the underside of the hoop at the
pointed end of the design.

Take the needle back down through the same hole, leaving a large
loop of thread on the surface.

Bring the needle up through the fabric at the centre of the

curved/opposite end of the design. Pull the thread through the loop
carefully – do not pull too tightly – so that it maintains the petal shape.

www.peonypatterns.com
#peonypatterns #peonypatternscarnation #carnationembroidery
Page | 32
Push the needle back down, over the thread, in front of the hole that
the needle just came up through. This will help to secure the thread
against the fabric.

Once all the leaves and petals are finished, tie off the thread at the
back of the hoop and trim any excess thread.

Stem Stitch

Using a total of 3 single strands of floss, thread and tie off the strands at
one end. Bring the needle up from the underside of the hoop at the
very start of the design.

#peonypatterns #peonypatternscarnation #carnationembroidery
Page | 34
Make a single straight stitch, slightly longer than a regular straight stitch.
But do not pull the thread all the way through to the underside of the
hoop. Ensure to leave a small loop of thread on the surface.

Before pulling the thread all the way through to the underside, bring
the needle back up through the face of the fabric, at the halfway
point between the first two stitches.

www.peonypatterns.com
#peonypatterns #peonypatternscarnation #carnationembroidery
Page | 35
Pull the thread through completely, ideally ensuring that the thread is
positioned at the top of the stitch just created, as shown below.

Push the needle back down, a normal stitch length away from the end
of the first stitch. Do not pull the thread all the way through, again
leaving a small loop of thread on the surface.

www.peonypatterns.com
#peonypatterns #peonypatternscarnation #carnationembroidery
Page | 36
Bring the needle back up through the hole at the end of the first stitch
and pull the needle/thread upwards. Ensure that the thread is coming
up on the same side consistently throughout the stitching. This will result
in giving it a ‘twisted’ look.

Continue this pattern of stitching for the entire stem. At the end of the
stem, push the needle back down at the end point of the last stitch, so
that both ends of the stitches meet.

Backstitch

Using 3 single strands of floss, thread and tie off at one end. Bring the
needle through from the underside of the hoop, one single space
ahead. To create the backstitch, bring the needle back down to the
underside of the hoop at the starting point of the design.

Bring the needle back up through to the face of the fabric on the stitch
line, once again leaving a stitch space. Place the needle through the
same hole at the end of the last stitch.

Continue bringing the needle up through the fabric leaving a stitch

space and taking the needle back to the previous stitch point along
the line, until completed. Tie off the thread on the underside of the
design.

Whipped Backstitch

To add the whipped detail to backstitch, complete the backstitch

steps first. Using 3 single strands, in either the same or a different colour.
Thread the needle and tie off the floss strands together. Bring the
needle up at the top end of the last backstitch.

Slide the needle upwards through the second last stitch.

Continue along the design, always starting at the bottom and bringing
the needle upwards, so the working thread is at the top of the
backstitch.

On the last stitch, instead of pulling the needle all the way through,
poke the needle under the stitch and through to the back of the fabric
and tie off the thread.

Woven Wheel – Spokes

Using a single strand of floss, thread and tie off at one end. Bring the
needle up from the underside of the hoop, through the centre of the
wheel.
Tip: Add french knots to the centre of the large woven wheels prior to
stitching for ease and convenience.

Make a straight stitch following the ‘spokes’ until it resembles a star. Tie
the floss off on the underside of the fabric.

Woven Wheel – Outer

Using 3 single strands of floss, thread and tie off at one end. Bring the
needle up from the underside of the hoop, very close to the centre of
the wheel.

www.peonypatterns.com
#peonypatterns #peonypatternscarnation #carnationembroidery
Page | 45
Start weaving the needle over and under each of the spokes, pulling
the fabric taut after each under and over.

The tighter the floss is pulled, the thicker and more dimensional it will
appear. For a softer flatter wheel, pull the floss a little less firmly.
Experiment with different types of looks. For added dimension try using
different colors or variegated threads. After the last weave, poke the
needle through to the underside, tie off and trim any excess thread.

Weave Stitch

Using 6 single strands of floss, thread and tie off at one end. Bring the
needle up through the fabric where the design begins.

Take the needle back down on the opposite side of the design. This will
create the anchor stitch. Continue the anchor stitches along the length
of the design.

www.peonypatterns.com
#peonypatterns #peonypatternscarnation #carnationembroidery
Page | 47
Please note that for the remaining steps, a coordinating thread colour
has been used to highlight the technique being stitched. At the bottom
of the design, close to the side edge, bring the needle back up just
below the anchor stitch. Begin to weave the needle over and under
each anchor stitch until the top of the design is reached. Carefully pull
the thread through the design. Push the needle down through to the
underside of the fabric.

This time, bring the needle back up through the fabric at the top of the
design, between the top two anchor stitches, and slightly over from the
first line of weaving. With the second line of weaving, repeat the same
technique that was used in the first line of weaving, however, ensure to
start weaving in the opposite order of how the first line was stitched.
Therefore, as the first line was weaved over first, the second line would
be weaved under first.

Bring the needle back up through to the face of the fabric, next to the
original starting point. Take the needle back down to the underside of
the fabric, next to the previous opposite stitch. Continue filling the
shape in, working across the shape. Alternatively, break it up into
sections and fill each section separately. Once completed, on the
underside of the design, tie off and trim any excess thread.
