EVIDENCIA DE APRENDIZAJE: Identifica la diferencia entre un gerundio y un infinitivo y los utiliza de manera adecuada.

ACTIVITIES
1. Read the next information. (Lea la siguiente información y tome apuntes).

What is a gerund? A gerund is a noun made from a verb by adding "-ing." The gerund form of the verb "read"
is "reading." You can use a gerund as the subject, the complement, or the object of a sentence.
Examples:

 Reading helps you learn English. subject of sentence


 Her favorite hobby is reading. complement of sentence
 I enjoy reading. object of sentence

Gerunds can be made negative by adding "not."


Examples: He enjoys not working. / The best thing for your health is not smoking.
What is an infinitive? An infinitive is the "to" form of the verb. The infinitive form of "learn" is "to learn." You
can also use an infinitive as the subject, the complement, or the object of a sentence.
Examples:
 To learn is important. (Subject of sentence).
 The most important thing is to learn. (Complement of sentence).
 He wants to learn. (Object of sentence).

Infinitives can be made negative by adding "not."

Examples: I decided not to go. / The most important thing is not to give up.

 We use gerunds (verb + ing):

 After certain verbs - I enjoy singing


 After prepositions - I drank a cup of coffee before leaving
 As the subject or object of a sentence - Swimming is good exercise

 We use 'to' + infinitive:

 After certain verbs - We decided to leave


 After many adjectives - It's difficult to get up early
 I came to London to study English

2. When are verbs followed by gerunds and when are they followed by infinitives? Study the grammar
reference chart below. (¿Cuándo van seguidos los verbos de gerundios o de infinitivos? Observe la

Some verbs are followed only by infinitives.


For example: “He wanted to play football.”
agree want
choose forget (to do something)
decide remember (to do something)
Some verbs are followed by objects and infinitives.
For example: “My father taught me to drive a car.”
allow send
ask teach
invite warn
Some verbs are followed only by gerunds.
For example: “I enjoy watching action movies.”
avoid finish
consider quit
enjoy miss
Some verbs are followed by a preposition and gerunds.
For example: “Sometimes I worry about growing old.”
believe in talk about
feel like think about
plan on worry about
Some verbs are followed by either infinitives or gerunds with no change in meaning of the
sentence.
For example: “I like to swim.” OR “I like swimming.”
begin like
continue love
hate start
Some verbs are followed by either infinitives or gerunds, but there is a change in the meaning of
the sentence.
For example: “I remember visiting my grandmother when I was a child.”
“Did you remember to study for the test?”
forget stop
remember try
EXAMPLES

suggest: He suggested staying at the Grand Hotel.
want*: I want to come to the party / I want him to
recommend: They recommended meeting earlier.

keep: He kept working, although he felt ill.
would like*: I would like to see her tonight / I would like
avoid: She avoided talking to her boss.

promise: We promised not to be late.
3. Complete the next sentences as indicated, copy them on your notebook and translate them.

4. Fill in the gaps with gerund or infinitive form of the verb in brackets. (Complete los espacios en blanco
