Problem No. 1:
An insulated steam pipe (k = 312 Btu-in/hr.ft2.0F), located where the ambient temperature
is 90 deg F, has an internal diameter of 2 in and external diameter of 2.25 in. The outside
diameter of the corrugated asbestos insulation (k = 0.828 Btu-in/hr.ft2.0F) is 5 in and the
surface coefficient on the outside is 2.5 Btu/hr.ft2.0F. On the inside, the steam has a
temperature of 300 deg F and h = 1000 Btu/hr.ft2.0F. Compute (a) the heat loss per foot
of the pipe length, and (b) the surface temperature on the inside of the insulation.

Problem No. 2:
A hollow steel sphere (k=312 BTU-in/HR.sq.ft.deg F) contains a 150-Watt electrical
filament, and these data are known: inside radius = 10 in, outside radius = 12 in. The film
coefficients for the inner and outer surfaces are 6 and 2 Btu/HR sq.ft deg F respectively;
the environmental temperature is 85 deg F. If 1-in layer of insulation is wrapped around
(k = 0.43 BTU-in/HR.sq.ft.deg F) the sphere and assuming steady state compute: (a) the
temperature of the inside air, and (b) surface temperature between the sphere and the
insulation.

Problem No. 3
Determine the heat transfer surface area required for a heat exchanger constructed
from a 0.0254 m OD tube to cool 6.93 kg/s of a 95% ethyl alcohol solution ( Cp = 3810
J/kg.K) from 65.6 deg C to 39.4 deg C, using 6.30 kg/s of water available at 10 deg C.
Assume that the over- all coefficient of heat transfer based on the outer tube area is 568
W/m2.K and consider a counterflow. Ans. 41.4 m2
