Hydroponics
Hydroponics is a soilless method of growing
plants that uses nutrient-rich water as the
growing medium. Hydroponics systems can
range from simple setups using a single
nutrient solution to complex systems with
automated nutrient delivery and monitoring.
8
Aquaponics

Aquaponics is a
combination of
aquaculture (fish
farming) and
hydroponics.
Aeroponics
Aeroponics is a soilless method of
growing plants that uses mist to deliver
water and nutrients directly to the
plant roots. The plants are usually
grown in a closed chamber, and the
mist is delivered through nozzles or
sprayers. Aeroponics systems can
produce high yields with minimal water
use.
Vertical Farming
➢ This is a method of growing
crops in vertically stacked
layers, using artificial
lighting and controlled
environments to optimize
growing conditions.

➢ Vertical farming can

produce crops in urban
areas and in areas where
traditional farming is not
possible.

17
Plenty, San Francisco, USA
Plenty is a startup that uses vertical farming to
grow produce using hydroponics. The company
operates several vertical farms in the San
Francisco Bay Area and plans to expand to
other locations.
Sky Greens, Singapore
Sky Greens operates vertical farms using
an innovative rotating tower system. The
company has several farms in Singapore,
providing fresh produce to local
residents.
AeroFarms, New Jersey, USA
AeroFarms is a leading indoor farming company
that uses aeroponics to grow produce in
vertically stacked layers. The company operates
a large indoor farm in New Jersey and has plans
to expand to other locations.
21
Green Sense Farms, Indiana, USA
Green Sense Farms is a vertical farming company that
uses aeroponics to grow produce in a controlled
environment. The company operates a large indoor
farm in Indiana and provides fresh produce to local
retailers and restaurants.
Farm.One, New York, USA
Farm. One is a vertical farming company that uses
hydroponics to grow herbs and microgreens in a
controlled environment. The company operates several
vertical farms in New York City and provides fresh
produce to local restaurants and consumers.
Toshiba Clean Room Farm, Yokosuka, Japan
Toshiba operates a clean room farm in Yokosuka,
Japan, using hydroponics and LED lighting to grow
lettuce and other crops in a sterile environment.
The farm is located in an old semiconductor
factory and produces high-quality, pesticide-free
produce.
Hands-Free Farm
The "hands-free farm" project is under
development by researchers at Charles Sturt
University in Wagga Wagga, Australia, in
partnership with Food Agility Co-operative
Research Centre. Once completed, the 1,900-
hectare farm will serve as a demonstration of
the capability of robotics and AI in farming.
Netherlands
The Netherlands is a global leader in
greenhouse technology, and many companies
and research institutes in the country are
focused on developing new techniques for
vertical farming and 3D agriculture. For
example, Wageningen University & Research is
conducting research on the use of LED lighting,
climate control, and automation to optimize the
growth of crops in vertical farms.
Israel
Israel is a leader in agricultural technology, and
many companies and research institutes in the
country are focused on developing new
techniques for 3D agriculture, such as vertical
farming and aeroponics. For example, the
Israeli company Vertical Field is developing a
modular vertical farming system that can be
installed on rooftops and other urban spaces.
NASA
Lunar, Martian Greenhouses Designed to Mimic Those on
Earth. While astronauts have successfully grown plants
and vegetables aboard the International Space Station.
NASA scientists at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida
are collaborating with some university teams to develop
long-term methods that could help sustain pioneers
working in deep space.

THE FIRST AQUACULTURE FARMS ON MARS AND THE OUTER SPACE

A JV of SpaceX and CERN was announced in November 2018 and on February 26, 2019, MAT
Filtration Technologies has been awarded the design and the installation of the first-ever
Recirculating Aquaculture Systems in the outer space.
30
SPACE AQUACULTURE TECHNOLOGY

MAT’s innovative technology for this critical and premier

application is based on Hybrid Autotrophic
Bacteria using human feces and Advanced Life Support
Systems powered by turbine technology which will assist
the Aquaponic Development in Mars.
The commissioning of the equipment is scheduled for
City of Mars
the 7th stage of the MARS ONE project (Cargo Mission) in
2029 while their first crew members will land on Mars
during the 10th stage of the mission in 2032.

You will design all by yourself a small
hydroponics systems for a family of four (4)
residing in an urban/rural area from where you
belong to have them all the vegetable supply
needed for regular household! (Max 2 pages
with design)

You have to submit it in Microsoft Teams

(Assignment section) with the file name strictly
as follows – ‘AG1’ followed by ‘Roll no.’
