1 Introduction
This standard describes the system for numbering SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition) wiring within switchgear and protection panels to uniquely identify controls,
indications, alarms and analogues.
The SCADA numbering has been developed alongside the harmonised protection and control
schemes (refer to EDS 05-0001).
2 Scope
This SCADA numbering system detailed in this standard applies to all new plant and
equipment installed at grid and primary substations in EPN, LPN and SPN.
The one exception is modifications and extensions to existing plant and equipment which shall
use an extension of the numbering scheme already in use.
Switchgear/relay panel;
Voltage of the associated circuit;
Type of reference (control, alarm etc).
However, this presented a number of problems, e.g. poor maintenance and ever increasing
length of the references and numbers leading to difficulty in reading the numbers when applied
to the wiring. A new numbering system was developed utilising the best parts of the existing
numbering systems and is based on the following:
There is no need to identify the panel as the wiring only exists within that panel;
There is no need to identify the voltage of the circuit;
There is no need to differentiate between alarm and indications;
Analogues are the only continuously variable indications;
Wiring will only be ferruled on the plant side (all other wiring is colour coded).
This enables a simple short numbering system to be designed using a limited number of
characters and range of numerals. The new SCADA numbering system consists of the
following:
A new range of references that are the same for all voltages and similar functions;
Alarms and indications that are a single character followed by up to three digits;
Controls that are a single character followed by up to three digits;
Analogues that are two characters followed by up to two digits. Two characters are
required in this instance to differentiate from normal protection wiring.
An example set of references is outlined in Table 1. A full list of references is given in Appendix
A.
4 System Maintenance
The full list of references given in Appendix A will be maintained by UK Power Networks
Operational Telecoms using the following guidelines:
This UK Power Networks standard is the only source of references for SCADA numbering
purposes;
This UK Power Networks standard acts as the reference point and that all newly allocated
numbers are recorded promptly to avoid duplication;
Generally it should be unnecessary to add to this list other than for additional standard
protection and control schemes.
Every effort should be made, when the need arises for an additional reference, to check
whether an existing one would be adequate for the purpose, in which case a note to this
effect will be added to the reference selected, instead of a new reference being created.
5 Future Development
The numbering schemes will be developed to provide a full schedule of connections for each
of the UK Power Networks standard protection and control schemes. This will show the order
of termination and size of each interconnecting cable which will be terminated in colour order
without ferruling on the Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) side of the plant connections.
