Prikkelbaarheid is meer dan eenige andere gemoedsstemming,
een zonde des vleesches. 't Is niet, zoo als nijd, wrok, wangunst,
wraak, een gebrek, dat wij ons even goed in een geest zonder
lichaam kunnen voorstellen: want inderdaad heeft niets meer van
een lichaamskwaal dan dit. Er zijn ongesteldheden, er zijn
zenuwaandoeningen zóó hevig, dat we niet kunnen begrijpen, hoe
zelfs de geest van een engel, als hij in een lichaam moest huizen,
dat aan zulke kwalen lijdt, meer zou vermogen te doen dan geduldig
verdragen. Zenuwlijden is het, anders niet: en de aanvallen, die het
arme slachtoffer op anderen doet, zijn even goed een gevolg van
ongesteldheid, als het happen en bijten van een lijder aan
watervrees.
Daarentegen zijn er anderen, die beminnend en bemind hun
levenspad bewandelen, overal welkom, hooggeroemd als
voorbeelden van 't geen de godsdienst vermag, en die met dat al om
die reden toch weinig lof verdienen. Hun geest woont in een
lichaam, zoo kalm en bedaard, hun gewaarwordingen zijn allen zoo
frisch en krachtig en aangenaam, dat het hun niet mogelijk valt, de
wereld anders dan met een liefdevol oog en in het vroolijkste licht te
bezien. De kwade luim van anderen maakt hen niet boos; overkropte
bezigheden doen hunne zenuwen nooit aan; en hunne gansche
leven lang wandelen zij in den helderen zonneschijn van volkomen
lichamelijke gezondheid.
Zie Fidel eens. Hij is nooit zenuwachtig, nooit knorrig, hij bijt of
bromt nooit, maar terstond na de hevigste mishandeling kwispelt hij
u met zijn staart vergiffenis toe,—en dat alleen omdat de natuur zijn
hondenlijf zoo samengesteld heeft, dat het altijd harmonisch werkt.
Was ieder mensch met een maag en met zenuwen als de zijne
bedeeld 't zou ongetwijfeld beter en gelukkiger in de wereld
toegaan. De man heeft waarheid gesproken die eens de opmerking
maakte, dat de grondslag van alle intellectueele en moreele waarde,
op een goed gezond lichaam moet berusten.
Nu valt het, denk ik, wel niet te ontkennen, dat de vrede en het
geluk van den huiselijken kring meestal groot gevaar loopen, als een
der huisgenooten aan die prikkelbaarheid van zenuwen lijdt. Ieder
zal, wanneer hij over de zaak nadenkt, moeten erkennen dat zijne
betrekking in de maatschappij, het karakter zijner vrienden, zijne
waardeering van hunne deugden en gebreken, zijne wenschen en
verwachtingen alle zeer veel van den staat zijner zenuwen afhangen.
Kunnen wij ons niet allen herinneren, hoe 't ons wel eens gebeurd is,
dat wij als miskende schepselen, wier vrienden allen onredelijk
waren, wier leven vol beproevingen en tegenspoeden was, te bed
gingen, en op een heerlijken morgen wakker werden, toen al deze
inbeeldingen verdwenen waren met de nevelen van den nacht? Onze
vrienden waren toch nog zoo kwaad niet; de kleinigheden, die ons
kwelden, schenen ons bij den helderen zonneschijn belachelijk toe;
en wij waren gelukkige menschen.
De levenswijsheid schrijft ons derhalve in dit opzicht twee dingen
voor: vooreerst, te zorgen, dat ons lichaam niet in zulk een
prikkelbaarheid komt, en, ten andere dezen toestand te kennen en
te bedwingen, wanneer wij dien niet kunnen afweren.
Natuurlijk is de eerste regel de beste en toch schijnt dit het minst
van allen erkend en begrepen te worden. Wij hebben tal van
voorschriften voor 't beheerschen van den tong en het karakter; 't is
een modderpoel,—zooals Bunyan naar waarheid gezegd heeft—
waarin karrevrachten van goedkoope raadgevingen geworpen zijn;
maar hoe wij gezond kunnen worden en blijven naar hoofd, maag en
zenuwen, zoodat wij nooit in verzoeking komen om knorrig of driftig
te zijn, dat is een onderwerp, waarover de geleerden, die
godsdienstige en zedelijke voorschriften geven, doorgaans maar los
heenloopen.
Zonder mij nu in de physiologische termen te verdiepen, mag ik
toch ten aanzien van ons menschelijk wezen vaststellen, dat er een
macht is, waardoor wij leven, ons bewegen en zijn,—waardoor het
hoofd denkt, de maag het eten verteert, het bloed omloopt, en de
verschillende deelen van ons lichaam doen, wat ze doen moeten. Dit
iets—noem het zenuwvocht, zenuwgestel, levenskracht, hoe of gij
ook wilt—kan echter niet nauwkeurig omschreven worden. Het is
bovendien duidelijk, dat de menschen die kracht in zeer
verschillende mate bezitten: enkele brengen haar voort even als een
stoommachine den stoom, en gebruiken haar voortdurend, zonder
dat zij uitgeput raakt; en anderen bezitten er weinig van en
verbruiken haar snel. Wij zeggen wel eens, dat deze of gene spoedig
op is. Van zulk een uitputting zijn de zuiver physieke gevolgen
zenuwachtigheid en prikkelbaarheid. Zoo iemand heeft zijne
zenuwkrachten uitgeput,—even als een jongen, die, wat een heele
week hem moet voeden, op Maandag al opeet, om dan tot den
volgenden Maandag te vasten; of wel, zoo iemand heeft de
hoeveelheid zenuwkracht, voor 't geheele lichaam met al zijne
deelen benoodigd, voor een enkel deel geheel in beslag genomen en
tot schade der overige deelen verbruikt. Zoo gaat het dikwijls bij
letterkundigen: 't overspannen hoofd verbruikt voor zich al wat de
andere lichaamsdeelen voor een gezonde werking noodig hebben;
de maag heeft geen kracht tot verteren; de afscheiding der vochten
gaat ongeregeld; en het gebrekkig geassimileerd voedsel,
opgenomen in iedere zenuw en vezel, voert met zich iets prikkelends
en scherps, dat een algemeene onrustigheid en onlust veroorzaakt.
Zoo brengt menigeen zijn geheele leven worstelend door, terwijl
nauwelijks een op de duizend dat volkomen evenwicht der deelen,
die eigenaardige harmonie van krachten kent, waaruit een gezonde
toestand en als gevolg van dezen, opgeruimdheid en welwillendheid
ontstaat.
Wij, Amerikanen, zijn een zenuwachtig prikkelbaar volk. Vele
kinderen, in de hoogere standen waarschijnlijk de groote
meerderheid, komen ter wereld met zenuwkwalen en
hersenontstekingen en maagziekten, die hen ongeschikt maken voor
eenige sterke of langdurige inspanning zonder dat zij er hinder van
hebben, zoodat zij te midden van al hun zwoegen telkens moeten
ophouden en uitzieken. Het leven hier in Amerika is zoo gejaagd,
gaat zoo snel, het klimaat is zoo prikkelend ten gevolge van de
plotselinge afwisselingen in de temperatuur, dat, wie aanleg heeft
voor zenuwongesteldheden, gedurig erger moet worden.
Wanneer men er dus geen gewetenszaak van maakt een deel van
zijn krachten voor huiselijk leven en voor huiselijk verbruik te
besparen—dan moet wel onder zulke omstandigheden de huiselijke
kring dikwijls niet meer voor ons wezen dan toevluchtsoord, als wij
op en af zijn.
Papa is na het haastig gebruik van 't ontbijt onophoudelijk in de
weer, en leeft den geheelen dag voor zijn zaak: hij wijdt daaraan alle
krachten van hoofd en hart, van lichaam en ziel toe, en komt dan
afgemat en uitgeput t'huis, zoodat hij het geschreeuw van den
zuigeling niet kan verdragen, en de pret en 't gestoei van de andere
kinderen hem nog meer uit zijn humeur brengen. De kleinen zeggen
in hun ronde taal: „Papa is knorrig.”
Mama gaat uit op partij, tot een twee uur in den nacht: zij zit daar
in een benauwde zaal, eet van allerlei, en is morgenochtend zoo
zenuwachtig dat niemand haar een strootje in den weg moet leggen.
Papa's, die dag op dag zóó hard werken, en mama's, die zóó
avond op avond uitgaan,—wat blijft er van hen over om den
huiselijken haard op te vroolijken en voor hunne kinderen te leven?
Wel zegt de man, dat hij 't niet helpen kan, want dat zijn zaken
toch voorgaan; maar waartoe dient het, tot zulk een prijs zijn geld
op te stapelen? Waarom niet liever wat minder geld verdiend en wat
meer tijd besteed aan 't huiselijk leven, tot vreugd van zijne vrouw
en tot nut van zijn kinderen? Waarom al zijn kracht tot op den
laatsten droppel aan wereldsche bemoeiingen verspild, en aan zijne
innigst-geliefden niets anders gegeven dan den bitteren droesem?
De meeste waarschuwingen, van den kansel en in de kerk tegen
overdreven zingenot ingebracht, hebben niets uitgewerkt, omdat zij
verkeerd werden aangelegd. Er is, bij voorbeeld, een kanonvuur
geopend tegen het dansen, en dat alles om redenen, die den toets
volstrekt niet kunnen doorstaan. 't Is dwaasheid het dansen een
zonde te noemen, omdat wij leven in een vergankelijke wereld en
ons voor de eeuwigheid moeten voorbereiden. Als het dansen
daarom zonde is, dan is ook knikkeren en stoeien met kinderen, of
veel van lekker eten houden en honderd andere dingen, waartegen
niemand ooit bezwaar heeft ingebracht, dan is dat ook zonde.
Maar als een dominé zei, dat alles zonde is, wat de kracht, voor de
vervulling onzer dagelijksche plichten benoodigd, verbruikt en ons
uitput en ontstemt juist dan en juist daar, wanneer en waar wij
vooral gezond en opgeruimd moesten zijn, dan zou hij iets zeggen
dat geen zijner hoorders zou kunnen ontkennen. Als hij er dan
bijvoegde, dat bals, die 's avonds ten tien ure beginnen en 's nachts
te vier ure afloopen, de kracht uitputten, de zenuwen verzwakken,
en iemand geheel ongeschikt maken voor de vervulling zijner
huiselijke plichten, dat zou alweêr iets zijn, dat zeer weinig
menschen hem zouden betwisten. Als hij verder beweerde, dat het
verkeerd is bedorven lucht in te ademen en de maag zóó met
ongezonde lekkernijen op te vullen, dat men er dagen achtereen
gejaagd en knorrig van is, dan zou hij evenzeer iets in 't midden
brengen, dat door niemand zou geloochend worden, en de hoop
mogen voeden, dat zijn preek niet geheel zonder vrucht zou blijven.
Het beste middel ter beoordeeling, of eenig vermaak al of niet
geoorloofd is, bestaat hierin, dat wij er op letten, welken invloed het
daags daarna heeft op onze zenuwen en op ons humeur.
Elke uitspanning moet altijd,—zoo als het woord reeds aanduidt,—
ontspanning zijn; ze moet ons opfrisschen, vernieuwen, ons lichaam
of onzen geest bij beurten tot rust brengen en ons een vroolijke
opgewektheid geven, om het dagelijksch werk weêr op te vatten.
Geen krachtiger argument tegen alle prikkelende middelen,—
onverschillig of ze opwekkend dan of ze bedwelmend zijn,—dan de
waarheid, dat ze gelijk staan met een wissel, waarbij men te veel
disponeert,—dan de opmerking, dat ze in één uur de kracht
uitputten, die voor geheele dagen bestemd was.
Door te veel werk, te veel zorg, te veel uitspanning verbruikt
iemand al den gewonen wettigen interest van zijn zenuwgestel.
Onvoorziens wordt hij om 't een en ander aangesproken. Hij moet
een moeilijke rekening opmaken, een verhandeling of een preek
stellen, en hij windt zich op met een kop koffie, een sigaar, een extra
glas; in één woord, hij handelt juist als een doorbrenger, die eerst
den interest van zijn geld heeft verteerd en nu zijn kapitaal
aanspreekt. Alle kracht, die hij op deze wijze verkrijgt, gaat van zijn
hartebloed af: hij borgt het van een onbarmhartigen schuldeischer,
die mettertijd niet rusten zal, eer hij voor 't geleende hem 't pond
vleesch uit het lijf heeft gesneden.
Bezinksel van zulk eene overprikkeling,—anders niet,—is meestal
de gemelijkheid, die 't huiselijk geluk verstoort. Er zijn er, die koffie
drinken, en toch dagelijks bekennen, dat zij er zenuwachtig van
worden; er zijn er, die zich met tabak, anderen die zich met wijn of
sterken drank bedwelmen, en om eenige oogenblikken in de wereld
te schitteren, zichzelven en hun huisgenooten lange uren bezorgen,
waarin vriendelijkheid of innemendheid ver te zoeken is. Er zijn er
die zich Christenen noemen,—ellendige slaven, altijd in schuld bij de
natuur, altijd over meer beschikkende dan hun inkomen is, altijd hun
kapitaal van levenskracht opterende, omdat zij den zedelijken moed
niet hebben een onwaardige neiging te onderdrukken.
't Is hetzelfde geval met die tallooze inwilligingen aan de tong
gedaan, die van de maag meer vergen dan zij doen kan, en al de
jammeren eener indigestie veroorzaken. Voor iemand die aan
hardnekkige verstoppingen lijdt, is 't niet mogelijk zich als een goed
Christen te gedragen; maar een goed Christen moet aan geen
hardnekkige verstoppingen lijden. Verstandig zichzelven te
beheerschen en aan dwaze inwilligingen geen voet te geven dat is 't
beste middel tegen alle verstoppingen. Menigeen is een lijder en
maakt ook de zijnen tot lijders, alleen omdat hij altijd maar
voortgaat met te gebruiken wat hij weet dat hem niet dient.
Maar de zucht, om te veel over onze krachten te disponeeren en
ze bij wijze van voorschot te gebruiken openbaart zich niet alleen in
ons dagelijksch bedrijf, in onze uitspanningen, of in de streeling van
ons gehemelte,—ze ontstaat ook door verleidingen, die vrij wat
gevaarlijker zijn, omdat ze met onze zedelijke godsdienstige
vermogens in verband staan. Er is ook op godsdienstig gebied een
versnelde polsslag, een overspanning, die ons onverbiddelijk naar
den afgrond der gemelijkheid voert. Zelfs Paulus werd in den derden
hemel niet opgetrokken, of hij voelde later den scherpen doorn in
het vleesch, den engel des Satans, die hem met vuisten sloeg.
Juist voor hen, die een meer dan gewoon godsdienstig gevoel
bezitten, is de verzoeking het grootst, om er in 't openbaar al te veel
aan toe te geven, zoodat na de overspanning ontspanning volgt en
hun geen kracht overblijft, om in het huiselijke leven anderen met
een goed voorbeeld voor te gaan.
Dominé X preekt van daag alsof hij een engel was; hij verliest zich
in de sferen eener hoogopgewondene godzaligheid, waar zijne
hoorders hem alleen uit de verte kunnen naoogen; hij verhaalt hun
van den overwinnaar, die de wereld overwint; van het onwrikbaar
geloof, dat geen lijden vreest; van dien vrede der liefde, door niets
op aarde te verbreken: en allen zien hem aan met stille
opgetogenheid, en wenschen, dat zij zich ook zoo konden verliezen!
Helaas! de overspanning, die hem zoo verheven doet spreken, die
hemelsche verrukking, is een dubbel en driedubbel voorschot, dat hij
van de natuur borgt,—en zijn vrouw, die onder zijn gehoor zit, denkt
er bij wat al donkere dagen van reactie haar voor de deur staan!
Veertien dagen lang is hij door een stormvlaag van wilde
opgewondenheid voortgezweept, waarbij hij twee, driemaal zooveel
van zijn krachten vergde, als ze geven konden, en telkens tot den
prikkel van sterke koffie zijn toevlucht nam. Hij heeft nacht op nacht
zieken bezocht of stervenden getroost en alle dagen menigte van
vrome bezoekers te woord gestaan, terwijl hij nog wel meende al
sterker en sterker daaronder te worden, omdat hij met iederen dag
prikkelbaarder en meer opgewonden werd. Met zijne hooggekleurde
ingevallen wangen en zijn glinsterende oogen, ziet hij er voor zijne
hoorders uit als een geest, die gereed staat de wieken uit te slaan
om naar eene hoogere wereld te zweven; maar voor zijne arme
vrouw belooft dit alles heel wat anders. Haar instinkt als vrouw en
als moeder zegt haar, dat hij met beide handen zijn levenskapitaal
aantast, dat er een vreeselijke afrekening volgen moet en dat er
vele, vele donkere dagen zullen komen. Hij, die zoo roerend heeft
gesproken over den vrede eener ziel, die in God hare rust vindt, zal
het geschreeuw van zijn jongste kind of het ronddribbelen van zijn
oudste niet kunnen verdragen: hij, die zoo dierbaar preêkte van de
volkomene overgave des geloofs, zal zich doodsbenauwd maken
voor de slagersrekening en sidderen van angst, dat het tractement
zeker op zal wezen, eer het nieuw kwartaal nog verschenen is; en hij
die op zoo treffende wijze het zwijgen van Jezus onder den
grievendsten smaad wist voor te stellen, hij zal maar al te vaak een
onbedacht woord aan zijn mond laten ontglippen. De arme X zal
dagen en weken achtereen ziek naar den geest en in 't geheel niet in
staat zijn, Christus op zulk een wijze te prediken, als de meest
afdoende van allen is: namelijk door zijn handel en wandel.
Maar hoe nu, moeten wij dan het werk des Heeren niet werken?
Ja zeker; doch het voornaamste werk des Heeren, waarvoor in de
eerste plaats moet gezorgd worden, is: een voorbeeld als Christus te
geven. Beter is het jaren achtereen gestadig en ijverig in stilte te
werken, zonder het aanwenden van eenigen prikkel, die het gestel
overspant, beter is het elken dag slechts zooveel kracht te
verbruiken, als de nacht door zijn rust weer herstelt, en het
gesprokene op den kansel toe te lichten door het gedrag in den
huiselijken kring,—dan nu eens in opgewondene overspanning en
straks weer in doffe neerslachtigheid het leven door te brengen.
Wat op de preekers van toepassing is, geldt evenzeer van de
hoorders. 't Vervullen van onze godsdienstplichten moet even als
onze uitspanningen beoordeeld worden naar den invloed, dien het
heeft op ons leven. Indien al te veel bidden, zingen en preeken ons
vermoeid, zenuwachtig en knorrig maakt, dan is het nagenoeg even
verkeerd als al te veel uitspanning.
Het zou wel te wenschen zijn, dat er dagelijks in iedere buurt een
paar stille en stichtelijke godsdienstige bijeenkomsten gehouden
werden, die 's morgens en 's avonds aller harten gedurende eenige
plechtige oogenblikken als tot één huisgezin vereenigden, en zonder
opzien te wekken de lamp des geloofs en der liefde, door haar
gestadig te voeden, brandende hielden. Dezen geest ademen enkele
van dagelijksche bidstonden, die, acht of tien jaren geleden in
eenige steden van Nieuw-Engeland begonnen, hun rustig karakter
niet verloochend hebben; deze geest heiligt ook de morgen- en
avondgodsdienstoefeningen, tot onze blijdschap bij de Episcopalen
in gebruik. Al wat de godsdienst in bestendige aanraking met het
dagelijksche leven brengt, zoodat het een recht gezond en
blijmoedig leven wordt, begroeten wij als een bode van een beteren
dag. Niets is beter voor den welstand van ons lichaam dan
dagelijksch gebed. Daarin ligt het uitnemendste middel om de
zenuwen tot bedaren te brengen en de zorgen te doen vergeten.
Mag ik niet hopen, dat eerlang alle Christenen het daarmeê eens
zullen zijn en dat alle buren als één gezin zich rondom één altaar
zullen vereenigen, om niet alleen voor zich zelven, maar ook voor
elkander te bidden?
De slotsom van onze geheele redeneering is dan:
Leg altijd wat weg, om uw te-huis er mee op te vroolijken, en
bewaar dat weggelegde even trouw als de priesters de toonbrooden
in den tempel bewaarden. Hoe hoog uw rang zij, hoe gewichtig en
heilig het ambt door u bekleed, gij wint niets met het verwaarloozen
van uw huiselijke plichten. Spaar u zelven zooveel dat gij in staat
zijt, te dragen en te verdragen, te geven en te vergeven, en
levenslust en vroolijkheid te verspreiden rondom den huiselijken
haard.
Als de laatste profeet des Ouden Verbonds het werk van den
voorlooper van den Messias wil karakteriseeren, dan zegt hij:—wat
denkt ge wel? „Hij zal het hart der vaderen tot de kinderen
wederbrengen, en het hart der kinderen tot de vaderen; opdat ik
niet kome, en de aarde met den ban sla!”
Maar al genoeg over 't geen men doen kon, om die ziekelijke
prikkelbaarheid te voorkomen. Dat ze toch nog voortdurend vele
slachtoffers maken zal, is toe te schrijven aan de volgende redenen:
Vooreerst: 't Gebruik van tabak, wijn, sterken drank en dergelijke
prikkelende middelen, van geslacht tot geslacht volgehouden, heeft
het hersen- en zenuwgestel in die mate aangetast, dat het lang zoo
sterk niet meer is als vroeger. Uitvoerig heeft Michelet dit onderwerp
in een zijner jongste werken behandeld; en wij hebben een
opkomend geslacht te verwachten, dat, met een bedorven
zenuwgestel geboren, niet dan door onophoudelijke en verstandige
zorgen tegen ziekelijke prikkelbaarheid kan bewaard blijven.
Er is een temperament, dat men het MELANCHOLISCHE noemt, aan
veel menschen, zelfs aan de edelste, aan de rijkstbegaafde eigen,—
een stoornis van 't evenwicht tusschen de zenuwkrachten, waaruit
nu eens hooge opgewektheid en dan weêr diepe neêrslachtigheid
volgt,—eene erfenis, rampzalig wie haar bezit, al gaat zij ook dikwijls
met groote talenten gepaard. Zelfs is zij nu en dan het treurige deel
van ongelukkigen, die geen talenten bezitten, en die derhalve hare
lasten en kwellingen te verduren hebben, zonder haar vergoeding te
genieten.
Wie zulk een temperament bezitten, zijn blootgesteld aan vlagen
van neêrslachtigheid en wanhoop, van zenuwlijden en
prikkelbaarheid, waarbij ze de gansche wereld met een somber waas
overtogen zien en zich een geheel verkeerde voorstelling maken van
zich zelven, van hunne vrienden, van hunne levensomstandigheden
en van alles, wat hun overkomt.
Voor hen, die daarmede behebt zijn, is het zeker 't
allerverstandigste, dat zij zich zelven en hun zwak leeren kennen,
dat zij begrijpen, hoe deze aanvallen van neêrslachtigheid en
moedeloosheid even goed een ziekteverschijnsel zijn als koorts of
kiespijn,—en dat het aan deze ziekte eigen is, het hoofd met valsche
voorstellingen op te vullen, waardoor zij in hun eigen oogen
ellendige en hatelijke schepsels zijn, waardoor hunne beste vrienden
onrechtvaardig en onvriendelijk schijnen en waardoor al wat er
gebeurt er uitziet, alsof het geheel verkeerd is en op het
ontzettendste verderf uitloopt.
Als iemand maar weet, dat hij zulk een temperament heeft, en het
voor een ziekelijk verschijnsel erkent,—dan is hij de bezwaren en
kwellingen, die er aan verbonden zijn, reeds half te boven. Hij zal
dan in die uren van bitterheid niet wagen zoo te spreken en te
handelen, alsof alles waarheid was, wat hij denkt en gevoelt en ziet.
Hij, wien deze wijsheid ontbreekt, stort over zijn gezin en zijn
vrienden de wateren der bitterheid uit: hij kwetst door onbillijke
beschuldigingen, en vergalt het huwelijksleven der zijnen door
inbeeldingen, die hij wel voor waarheid houdt, maar die even valsch
zijn als de visioenen van een koortslijder.
Een verstandig man, die aan deze kwaal lijdt, maar weet wat hem
scheelt, zal zich stellig voornemen te zwijgen, om de sombre
gedachten, die hem pijnigen, niet onder woorden te brengen.
Een zeer ontwikkelde en aardige vrouw, die nu en dan aan zulke
vlagen leed, zei eens tegen mij: „Er zijn tijden, mijnheer, dat ik door
den duivel bezeten ben, maar dan wacht ik mij wel, een enkel woord
te spreken.” Zoo droeg deze verstandige vrouw haren last zwijgend
met zich om, en maakte daardoor op allen, die haar kenden, den
indruk, dat zij een opgeruimd, lief karakter had; en toch, als zij maar
een tiende gedeelte van 't geen in haar ziekelijke uren bij haar
omging, had uitgesproken, zou zij al haar kennissen van zich
verwijderd en anderen even ongelukkig gemaakt hebben, als zij
zelve was. Door zelfkennis en zelfbeheersching was ze nu gelijk aan
een zonnestraal, die overal leven en vroolijkheid wekt.
Dergelijke overwinningen zijn overwinningen van waarachtige
heiligen.
Doch wanneer iemand, die aan deze zwaarmoedigheid lijdt, eens
in de verzoeking komt om haar zwaren last door 't gebruik van een
of anderen prikkel te verlichten dan is de strijd reddeloos verloren.
Uit deze soort van menschen, meer dan uit eenige andere, wordt het
groote heirleger van dronkaards en opiumschuivers gedurig
aangevuld. De Hypochondristen behooren, volgens de juiste
beschrijving van een hunner, Dr. Johnson, tot de ongelukkigen, voor
wie wel afschaffing, maar nooit matigheid mogelijk is. Zij kunnen, zij
willen niet matig zijn. Elke prikkel, waarmeê zij hun
zwaarmoedigheid zoeken te verdrijven, wekt eene onverzadelijke
begeerte naar meer, een brandenden hartstocht. Het temperament
neigt reeds uit zijn aard tot waanzinnigheid. De strengste,
zorgvuldigste en gelijkmatigste leefregel is noodig, om het binnen de
juiste palen te houden; maar het gebruik van prikkelende middelen
verergert het zoo zeer dat het tot razernij wordt.
Alle ouders behoorden bij de opvoeding hunner kinderen toe te
zien, of zich de teekenen van zulk een temperament bij hen
vertoonen. Zij doen zich reeds in de vroegste kindsheid voor; en er
kan aan de physieke en moreele opvoeding van een kind, dat
overhelling heeft tot vlagen van neêrslachtigheid, niet te veel moeite
en zorg besteed worden.
't Is volstrekt noodig daarbij alle overprikkeling bij uitspanning,
studie of leefwijze ten strengste te vermijden. Een verstandige
opvoeding zal in menig opzicht de onvermijdelijke kwalen en
kwellingen, aan deze ongelukkige gestellen eigen, kunnen
verzachten.
Maar er is nog een andere soort van menschen, die voor 't
beheerschen van hun luimen en humeuren alle wijsheid noodig
hebben; ik bedoel die talrijke klasse, wier ongelukkige
omstandigheden 't onvermijdelijk maken, dat zij zich altijd
overspannen en overwerken, zoodat zij elken avond uitgeput en
doodaf zijn. Ik denk aan die slovers, dagelijks onder een al te
zwaren last gebukt: neen! uw stuurschheid, uw knorrigheid moge
meêwarige zielen bedroeven, toch vertoornt ze ons niet. Ik denk aan
die moeders, met een troep kleine kinderen altijd bij haar en om
haar, met een zuigeling die haar nacht noch dag rust gunt: aan die
huisvaders die met al hun tobben en zwoegen 't gebrek ter
nauwernood buiten de deur kunnen houden,—ja, aan allen denk ik,
die sloven en slaven en boven hun kracht onder de lasten des levens
gebogen gaan.
Voor u heb ik maar tweeërlei raad, twee middelen om u van de
prikkelbaarheid te genezen, die 't gevolg van uw vermoeidheid is;
leer tegen de menschen te zwijgen en leer tegen God te spreken.
Het hart moet zich uiten of barsten,—maar laat het dan leeren
bestendig en vertrouwelijk gemeenschap oefenen met Een, die aan
alle plaatsen tegenwoordig is en medelijden heeft met al onze
zwakheden. Geen beter, geen ander middel is er tegen uw
gemelijkheid en uw klaagzucht. Zoo en zoo alleen kan er rust
ontstaan na de onrust; en kunnen de snaren, die door overspanning
gesprongen zijn, opnieuw gespannen worden, om een hemelsche
harmonie voort te brengen.
