"Capriana" Monastery
Capriana monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Basarabia(1429). It is situated only 35 km north west of Chisinau, at the Isnovat locality, on the bunch of the river with the same name (Isnavat). For a long period of time it was the headquarters of Moldovas bishop. It was founded by great Moldovan Rulers such as Stefan the Great. The chronicler Eftinie and one of the first poets of Moldova, Chiprian also lived here. Originally it was constructed completely in wood, later, in 1545, a church for the summer period called "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" was constructed from stone. In 1840 the "St. George" and in 1903 the "St. Nicolae" churches were built. The biggest convent library in Moldova was situated here in Capriana, it was endowed with precious gifts by different leaders. Closed and dilapidated during the post-war period, it was only reopened again in 1989, becoming a symbol of national revival.The monastery can be visited daily. Near the monastery there are other sites worth visiting: the Capriana-Scoreni nature reserve, the oak-tree of Stefan the Great, and theoldest nature reserve in Moldova, "Codrii".

The "Holy Trinity" Monastery of Saharna

The "Holy Trinity" Monastery of Saharna, situated about 110 km north of Chisinau on the right side of the Nistru, considered to be one of the biggest center for religious pilgrimages in Moldova. Here can be found the unique relicts o St. Cuvios Macarie, and on the top of the high cliff, according to a legend, there is a footprint of St. Maria.

An exceptional panoramic view of the numerous rocky hills and the forests around the small 16-km river, which run down 30 cascades and waterfalls, is opened up to the traveler from the cliff-tops. The monastic complex is a natura reservation; it encompasses 670 ha and is under the government protection.

Sorocas Fortress
In the medieval period the fortress of Soroca was part of a huge Moldovan defensive system, which comprised four fortresses on the Nistru river, two on the Danube and another three in the northern part of the country. With this "stone belt of fortresses", the country borders were well protected. Soroca fortress was built at the Nistru river crossing, on older fortifications. In 1499, on the order of Stefan cel Mare, a square wooden fortress was built, on the site of a former Genovan fortress called as Olihonia (Alciona). Between 15431546, while Petru Rares ruled the country, the fortress was completely re-built in stone, and in the shape one can see it today a perfect circle, the diameter of which is 37,5 m and with 5 bastions situated at equal distances. When designing the fortress the builders incorporated the supreme law of harmony the golden section, which makes the fortress unique among examples of European defensive architecture.

Orheiul Vechi Historical revelation of Moldova

Old Orhei is a museum complex that presents the remains of different civilizations established between the Nistru and Prut rivers. It is situated 60 km from Chisinau in a narrow, rocky, 150-200 m deep bend in the Raut River valley. The remains of the first human settlement can be found in the cliff caves. Up on the top of the cliff there was a strong fortification (V - III c. BC) built by the Geto-Dacian people, who had their own unique calendar at that time. A local villager will guide you to the historical traces of this region: the rests of Geto-Dacian fortress, still functioning cave monastery, ruins of the old Turkish bath. You will have the opportunity to visit the most interesting archaeological site housing the ruins of two cities (14th -16th century). Tartars settled here on their expansion to Western Europe. Continue with a visit to the well-maintained Orthodox cave monastery called St. Maria Dormata which was expanded and modified inside the cliffs by monks over the centuries. Christian churches provide magnificent scenery through the windows of the monastery which still functions today.
