INTRODUCTION:

In our modern daily lives, we rely on a myriad of

undeniably indispensable. However, within the

The project at hand,” Determining the Presence of


Various Chemicals in Household Products,” embarks on a
journey into the depths of these products. It seeks to
unveil the enigma of their chemical composition, to
decipher what lies within their bottles, cans, and tubes.
This endeavor is not merely an academic pursuit but a
vital quest for knowledge with profound implications for

The purpose of this project is to shed light on the intricate

The main goal “Determining the Presence of Various


Chemicals in Household Products,” is to systematically
investigate and analyse the chemical composition of
common household products, specifically focusing on
cleaningagents, food items, and personal care products.

This ambitious undertaking seeks to achieve several key


objectives:

Firstly, it aims to identify and quantify the specific


chemicals present within these household products. This
process involves the use of scientific methodologies, such
as spectroscopy, chromatography, and mass
spectrometry, to unveil the hidden components that

Experiment 1: Determining pH Levels
in Household Cleaning Agents

Aim: To measure the pH levels of different household


cleaning agents.

Materials:
1) Various household cleaning agents (e.g.,
dishwashing liquid, surfacecleaner)
2) pH indicator strips or a pH meter
3) Beakers
4) Distilled water
5) Procedure:
6) Pour a small amount of each cleaning agent into
separate beakers.

Dip a pH indicator strip into each beaker and note the


color change or use apH meter to measure the pH value.
Compare the pH values obtained from different cleaning
agents.
Observations:
Record the pH values of each cleaning agent.

Conclusion:
Determine whether the cleaning agents are acidic, basic,
or neutral based ontheir pH values.
Experiment 2: Testing for Starch in
Food Items

Aim: To test for the presence of starch in various food


items.

Materials:

1. Various food items (e.g., potato, bread, rice)


2. Iodine solution
3. Droppers
4. Test tubes

Procedure:
1) Crush a small piece of each food item in separate
test tubes.
2) Add a few drops of iodine solution to each test
tube.
3) Observe any color change.
Observations:

Record whether a blue-black color change occurs,


indicating the presence ofstarch.

Conclusion:
Determine which food items contain starch.
Experiment 3: Determining Lipids
(Fats and Oils) in Food Items

Aim: To test for the presence of lipids (fats and oils) in


various food items.

Materials:
1) Various food items (e.g., butter, vegetable oil,
chocolate)
2) Sudan III solution
3) Test tubes
4) Droppers

Procedure:
1. Place a small sample of each food item in separate
test tubes.
2. Add a few drops of Sudan III solution to each test
tube.
3. Gently shake the test tubes.
Observations:

Observe whether a red layer or droplets appear at the


interface, indicating thepresence of lipids.

Conclusion:
Identify which food items contain lipids.
Experiment 4: Testing for Protein in
Personal Care Products

Aim: To test for the presence of protein in various personal care


products.

Materials:
1) Various personal care products (e.g., shampoo, conditioner,

soap)
2) Biuret reagent

3) Test tubes

Procedure:

1) Pour a small amount of each personal care product into


separate testtubes.
2) Add a few drops of Biuret reagent to each test tube.

3) Observe any color change.


Observations:
Record whether a violet color change occurs, indicating the presence
ofproteins.

Conclusion:
Determine which personal care products contain proteins.
