Quantitative Analysis of Organic Compounds

1. On complete combustion, 0.246 g of an organic compound gave 0.198 g of CO2 and


0.1014 g of H2O. Determine the % composition of carbon and hydrogen in the compound.

2. In Dumas’ method for estimation of nitrogen, 0.3 g of an organic compound gave 50 ml of


nitrogen collected at 300 K temperature and 715 mm pressure. Calculate the %
composition of nitrogen in the compound. (Aqueous tension at 300 K = 15 mm)
3. During estimation of nitrogen present in an organic compound by Kjeldahl’s method, the
ammonia evolved from 0.5 g of the compound in Kjeldahl’s estimation of nitrogen,
neutralized 10 ml of 1 M H2SO4. Find out the % of nitrogen in the compound.
4. In Carius method of estimation of halogen, 0.15 g of an organic compound gave 0.12 g of
AgBr. Find out the % of bromine in the compound.

5. In sulphur estimation, 0.157 g of an organic compound gave 0.4813 g of barium sulphate.


What is the % of sulphur in the compound ?

6. An organic compound contains 69% carbon and 4.8% hydrogen, the remainder being
oxygen. Calculate the masses of carbon dioxide and water produced when 0.20 g of this
substance is subjected to complete combustion.
7. A sample of 0.5 g of an organic compound was treated according to Kjeldahl’s method.
The ammonia evolved was absorbed in 50 ml of 0.5 M H2SO4. The residual acid required
60 ml of 0.5 M solution of NaOH for neutralisation. Find the % composition of nitrogen in
the compound.

8. 0.3780 g of an organic chloro compound gave 0.5740 g of silver chloride in Carius


estimation. Calculate the % of chlorine present in the compound.
9. In the estimation of sulphur by Carius method, 0.468 g of an organic compound afforded
0.668 g of barium sulphate. Find out the % of sulhpur in the given compound.
10. Ammonia obtained from 0.4 g of an organic substance by Kjeldahl’s method was absorbed
in 30 cm3 of 0.25 M H2SO4. The excess of the acid was neutralised by the addition of
30 cm3 of 0.2 M NaOH. Calculate the % of nitrogen in the substance.
11. 0.301 g of an organic compound gave 0.282 g of silver bromide by a halogen estimation
method. Find the % of bromine in the compound.

12. 0.16 g of an organic substance was heated in Carius tube and the H2SO4 formed was
precipitated as BaSO4 with BaCl2. The weight of the dry BaSO4 was 0.35 g. Find the % of sulphur.

13. 0.40 g of an organic compound containing phosphorus gave 0.555 g of Mg2P2O7 by usual
analysis. Calculate the % of phosphorus in the organic compound.

14. 0.2475 g of an organic substance gave on combustion 0.495 g of CO2 and 0.2025 g of H2O.
Calculate the % of carbon and hydrogen in it.

15. 0.2018 g of the silver salt of a dibasic organic acid gave on complete decomposition of 0.1073 g of
silver. What is the molecular weight of the acid?

16. 2g of the hydrochloride of a monoprotic base was heated with 50 c.c. of N NaOH, the organic base
being thus liberated and volatilsed. The residual sodium hydroxide was then found to require 29.1
c.c. of N HCl for complete neutralisation. What is the molecular weight of the base?

17. 16 mL of a hydrocarbon gas was exploded with excess of oxygen. On cooling, the volume of the
resulting gaseous mixture was reduced by 48 mL. When KOH was added, there was a further
decrease of 48 mL in the volume. Find the molecular formula of the compound.

18. 7.5 mL of a gaseous hydrocarbon was exploded with 36 mL of oxygen. The volume of gases on
cooling was found to be 28.5 mL, 15 mL of which was absorbed by KOH and the rest was
absorbed in a solution of alkaline pyrogallol. If all volumes are measured under the same
conditions, deduce the formula of the hydrocarbon.
19. 7.5 mL of a hydrocarbon gas was exploded with excess of oxygen. On cooling, it was found to
have undergone a contraction of 15 mL. If the vapour density of the hydrocarbon is 14, determine
its molecular formula. (C = 12, H = 1)

20. 9 volumes of a gaseous mixture consisting of a gaseous organic compound A and just sufficient
amount of oxygen required for complete combustion, yielded on burning, 4 volumes of CO2, 6
volumes of water vapour and 2 volumes of N2, all volumes measured at the same temperature and
pressure. If the compound A contained only C, H and N, (i) how many volumes of oxygen are
required for complete combustion, and (ii) what is the molecular formula of the compound A?

21. 1.4 g of an organic compound was digested according to Kjeldahl’s method and the
ammonia evolved was absorbed in 60 mL of M/10 H2SO4 solution. The excess sulphuric
acid required 20 mL of M/10 NaOH solution for neutralization. The percentage of
