SPECIFICATIONS .Congratulations on your choice of the TOPCON Lensmeter, Model LM-T3, which we are sure will give you satisfactory service for many years, as well as being a highly attractive instrument for your office. May we suggest that you read this instruction manual carefully, in the order that it is written, before even touching the instrument. Thoroughly familiarize yourself with the instrument and its operations and you will be able to obtain the full benefit of a superior pre jon instrument. IMPORTANT 1. The lamp bulb has been taken out of the instrument for shipment to you. It is packed in a styrol-foam box which is inserted into the right bottom corner of the larger styrol-foam case for the instrument. There- fore, take it out and insert it in the lamphouse, following instructions given in “Exchange of the Lamp”, on page 14. Do not touch the surfaces of lenses, with your fingers or any hard object. 3. Do not switch the lamp on unnecessarily. 4. Do not use the instrument in a dusty or dirty location, or in a room of excessive moisture or in direct sunlight. 5. Do not force movements but re-read instructions once more. 6. Check whether the instrument's primary voltage matches that of your A.C. current. 7. Always use the instrument within 5 percent of the required voltag 8. Always support the base of the instrument, with both hands, when carrying the instrument. Do not attempt to disassemble or overhaul the instrument but contact the authorized dealer, or a competent repair shop or us.FEATURES (1) Freely Adjustable Instrument Tilt The instrument is freely tiltable to ony angle between 25 to 90 degrees, to suit personal inclination. When tilted 90 degrees, or placed vertically, contact lens measurements are greatly simplified since the accessory contact lens holder is simply placed against the lens table (2) Very Lerge Measuring Capacity Extra-large lens table permits lenses from 30mm to 90mm in diameter, as well as very thick lenses, to be measured. (3) Cortridge Type Marking Ink Pad The morking ink pad can be refilled very easily and quickly because the cartridge type pad is completely detachable. (4) Corona Type Target Simple, speedy operations ore possible becouse the corona target is suitable for a wide range of measurements, with the axis of cylinder lenses speedily determined. (5) Plastic Marker Pins Hard plastic marker pins are used for marking lenses clearly and distinctly, while, at the same time, protecting the surfaces of uncoated lenses and plastic lenses from scratches. (6) Compact, Smartly-Styled Instrument The instrument is compactly constructed and quite suitable for use in crowded quarters, as well as being smartly styled to match the decor of the modern interiorLamphouse cover Pilot light Vertex power knob Vertex power scale e® Vertex power index ® Instrument body Collimating lens cover Lens stop Lens holder pod ) Lens holder handle @ Vertex power reading lens 42) Protractor scale reading lens Eyepiece adjustment ring d) Protractor ring 9 Protractor scale plate e Axis marker knob ‘Axis marker pin case @® Lens table adjustment knob ® Marking ink cover @ Marking ink pad @ Lens table @® Switch @ Tilt fixing lever @® Baseplate ® Bose @ Electrical cord @ Axis marker pins 8 Guide pins @ Plug2. a) OPERATIONS Preparations v 21 3 4) 5) Since the lamp bulb is not inserted in the instrument for shipment to you, it must be taken out of its styrol-foam container and attached to its socket in the lamp- house, following instructions in "Exchange of the Lamp" on page 14. Place the instrument on a flat, steady surface, in a room which is not dusty, does not have excessive moisture, and where sunlight will not hit the instrument directly. Inspect the instrument and carefully clean all exposed lens surfaces, by lightly blowing or brushing away any dust or dirt At the same time, strip the tape away from the lens stop @ (as it i only re- quired while the instrument is in transit) and place the axis marker correctly above the marking ink pad @. Insert the plug @ into the nearest convenient room receptacle and turn on the switch @. Check whether the pilot light @ is illuminated, when the switch is depressed, If the plug of the electrical cord @ does not match the room receptacle or if the plug has not been attached Ibecause of specialized requirements in your region), exchange or connect a suitable plug, as the case may be, keeping the following points in mind when doing so. The electrical cord is a three-core wire, ore color-coded in brown, blue ond — Green,/Yellow bias-striped green/yellow colors. The brown and blue wirings should be connected to the A.C. terminals of the plug while the green/yellow wiring should be connected to the grounding (earthing) line, when there is provi- sion for grounding (earthing) in the three internal wirings, which lue receptacle. Otherwise, it should be grounded as stipulated by locol electrical regulations, Fig. 2 or, if grounding is not required, this wiring should be cut at its very end so that it cannot contact the other two wirings inside the plug. The instrument con be tilted for personal preference. Simply loosen the tilt locking lever @, by pushing it downwards or in the counter-clockwise direction, ond adjust tilt of the instrument with the left hand, while holding the base with the right. (aeWhen placed ot a suitable angle, simply pull up the locking lever in the clockwise direction and the instrument lock i tilt will be locked. (See Fig. 3) =~ 61 Look into the eyepiece ond check whether the corona target can be seen in the field of view, when the vortex gga 4 power knob is rotated. If the corona target cannot be seen, it is usually due to one of two reasons, or— (a) The lens stop @ is still taped Fig. 3 and, if so, the tape should be stripped off, or (bh) The axis marker is not over the marking ink pad and, if so, must be placed over correctly. 7) Next, before starting measurements, adjust the diopter power of the instrument's eyepiece for the user's eyesight, as otherwise, there might be serious errors in the readings Revolve the eyepiece adjustment ring (3 in the counter-clockwise direction, as for as it will go, ‘and completely rack out the eyepiece. Then, revolve the adjustment ring in the clockwise direction slowly, (oo while checking the field of view. Stop rotation when [. if : the cross-hairs (see Fig. 41 on the reticule ore first | \\ seen clearly and distinctly. = No lens should be placed on the lens table during the adjustment aes Adjustments will be easier ond speedier if the vertex Fig. 4 Cross-hairs power knob @) is first rototed {before adjustments) ‘ond set 10 some point around +2 or —2 diopters. The eyepiece is adjusted to the user's eyesight with the above and will help moke measurements more accurate. Correction for astigmatism, however, is not possible with the adjustment ring ond, therefore, the user must wear properly cer- rected eyeglasses, in such instances. The eyepiece should, preferably, be adjusted before every session, although you moy find it more convenient to mark your personal correction with some kind of lacquer, point or marking ink, so that the adjustment ring can be set for your eyesight immediately, if it has been moved. (2) Measurements (a) Measuring Lenses Corrected for Hyperopia and Myopia First, pull the lens holder out and rotate it, in either direction, which will keep it So(b) ‘open for insertion of the lens. Always place the concave surface of the spherical lens against the lens stop ®, 98 in Fig. 5, os otherwise the measurement will not be correct. Next, rotate the lens holder handle @ to the vertical position ond the lens holder @® will move down and hold the lens in place. The green corona image ot this time will probably be seen blurred in the field of view of the eyepiece. There- fore, rotate the vertex power knob @) until both cross-hairs (Fig. 4) and corona image are seen distinctly ot the some time. (See Fig. 6) ey Fig. 5 Correct placement of lens Fig. 6 View of spherical lens image The reading indicated by the vertex power index @, at this time, will be the vertex power of the lens in the instrument, as shown in diopters. IF the centers of the cross-hairs and corona image are displaced, the geometric center of the lens is also displaced from the optical axis of the lensmeter and must, therefore, be corrected. If the displacement is vertically, revolve the lens table adjustment knob (@ to raise or lower the lens table @. If the centers are displaced horizontally, move the lens to the right or left, as the case may be, until the centers ore coincided in the field of view. Measuring Lenses Corrected for Astigmatism Measuring the cylinder lens is slightly different from measuring the spherical lens and greater care must be exercised, although the lens is inserted in the same manner, The cylinder lens is always seen indistinctly when the corona image does not coincide with the axis of the lens. On the other hand, the corona image can be distinctly focused at two points, or the stronger principal meridion ond the weaker sees(el principal meridian (with one being perpen- dicular to the other!, by revolving the vertex power ‘knob @). When the corona is focused sharply, how- ever, the corona image is not seen os a simple circle (as in the cose of the spheri cal lens) but each dot of the corona circle is elongated or stretched into parallel lines, age a cylindrical tube ‘Fig. 7 View of astigmatic lens image moking the corena pointed in the direction of in Fig. 7. Further revolution of the vertex power knob will make the corona image appear meridian, as 0s a cylindrical tube perpendicular to the first meridian (when the corona is focused shorply) and will show that the cylindrical oxis has revolved. The vertex power reading must be obtained at the two points where the corona image is focused. Since they will differ, the power of the lens is obtained in the following monner:— (i) The difference between the two readings is the cylindrical power, while. (ii) The weaker power is the spherical power, For example, be:— the two readings are —1.00D and —1.75D, the measurement will =1.75)—(=1.00)= —0.75, or 1.000 c=-0.750 The cylindrical oxis is marked ct the position of the stronger power, by rotating the lens so that the cylindrical oxis is horizontal. Or it can be marked ot the position of the weaker power, by rotating the lens so that the cylindrical axis is vertical, which will cmount to the some thing. Of course, the protractor scale must previously be set to zero, cr, in other words, zero on the protractor scale plate 3) must be coincided to the index on the pro- tractor ring @. Measuring Mounted Lenses Cerrected for Astigmatism The vertex power of the cylinder leas mounted in the frame is also obtained in the same manner as noted. Measurements will be very simple if undertaken in the following manner. First, set the vertex power scale to zero and then revolve the vertex power knob. The spher- Fig. 8 View when cross-hoirs ical power will be the reading when the corona are-colacdedso the image is focused for the first time (the weoker cylinder lens axis powerl, while the difference between the first -7=(a) reading ond the reading when the corona image is focused for the second time {the stronger power) will be the cylindrical power. Next, the axis of the cyl inder lens will be obtained by rotating the protractor ring (@) until the longer line of the reticule cross-hairs coincides with the cylindrical axis (see Fig. 8), wi reading indicoted on the protractor scale by the index of the protractor ring. the Meesuring Mounted Lenses Corrected for Phoria Lenses corrected for phoria can be divided into those which are simply corrected for phoria only, which are prisms, and those which also have = & correction for refractive irregular- ities. The mounted lens is checked by ls placing the spectacle on the lens table @i), as in Fig. 9, with the geometric center of the lens posi- t tioned to coincide with the geomet. rical center of the lens stop @), or, bus in other words, the optical axis of 9 Placing the spectacles the lensmeter. (on the lens table When the vertex power knob @) is rotated to focus the corona image, the center of the corona will not coincide with the center of the ret- icule cross-hairs, in this cose, but will be seen displaced, as, for example, in Fig. 10, showing that there is Prism. Fig. 10 View of lens corrected for phoria Rotate the reticule cross-hairs, with the protractor ring @, until the right-hand side of the horizontal cross-hair line intersects the center of the corona image, if the corona image is above the horizontal cross-hair line at zero reading of the protractor scale. The reading on the protractor scale, at this time, will indicate the direction of the axis, while the graduations on the horizontal cross-hair line five. lines ond circles intersecting the cross-hair line) will show the prism diopter reading, as each graduation {or intersecting point) will be one prism diopter (A). For example, Fig. 10 would be o lens thot is corrected for phoria of 30° base and 3 prism diopters. SoIf the corona image is below the horizontal cross-hair line, at this time, use the left-hand side of the cross-hair line for the measurement, with 180° added to the protractor reading For example, in Fig. 11, the bose will be 210° (@+ 180°). le) Decentering the Unmounted Spherical Lens for Phoria Correction To decenter the unmounted lens 10 obtain prismatic effect, rotate the reticule, with the protractor ring @), until the horizontal cross-hair line is set to the axis direction indicated in the prescription. In Fig. 12, the direction is 30° is 180 Fig. 11 Addition of 180° to protractor Fig. 12 Image of (left eye) lens corrected angle reading @ for phoria of 30° base and 2/\ Next, while holding the lens against the lens stop, adjust the lens position so that the corona image intersects the horizontal cross-hair line at the prescribed prism diopter. Fig. 12 shows the corona image at 3 prism diopters. The axis must be marked, without any chonge in lens position, with the axis marker so that three dots ore marked on the horizontal center line, as illustrated in Fig. 12. For proper decentering effect, the lens should be mounted so the center dot coin- cides with the geometrical center of the frame while the other two dots ore on the horizontal center line. If the axis direction is lorger than 180°, first subtract 180° from the reading ond set the horizontal cross-hair line to the adjusted pro- tractor reading, while using the left-hand side of the horizontal cross-hair line for intersecting with the corona image. Mark L or R on the top side of the lens, to show whether it is for the left or right eye, and place on arrow around the inside dot (<1, to show the side to- words the nose. (See Fig. 12) (3) Axis Marking and Refilling of the Marking Ink Pad Pull the axis marker knob @ towards the operator. Once it hos slipped its g pin @, rotate the knob to the left, as far as it will go and then push in. The oxis oeAdjustment screw Fig. 13 Fig. 14 morker pins @ will be pressed against the lens surface and mark three dots on the horizontal center line. Of the three dots, the center dot indicotes the geometric center of the lens and the other two dots the axis. When the marking ink pad has dried up, simply pull out the cortridge type marking ink pad ond refill with marking ink until the felt surfoce is sufficiently moistened for use. Then, replace the marking ink pad. (4) Measurement of Contact Lenses Place the contact lens in the accessory contact lens holder ond place the latter on the lens table. (See Fig. 15) Conduct measurements in the same manner as r the spherical lens and the vertex power will be obtained directly from the vertex power scale.3. ADJUSTMENTS The lensmeter, similiar to other precision optical instruments is very precisely constructed ‘and, therefore, is easily influenced by rough handling during transportation, or strong shock in use or long years of service. Check the following points before using the new lensmeter ‘as well as periodically thereafter, and adjust, if necessary. (1) Adjustment of the Corona Image and Reticule Cross-Hairs (a) The corona image and reticule cross-hairs are properly adjusted when the former is correctly coincided with the center of the latter, as in Fig. 16. (The relationship must be checked without inserting o lens and at zero diopter. If, at zero diopter, the corona image is displaced to the right (or left) from the center of the cross-hairs, as in Fig. 17, Fig. 16 when the protractor ring is set to zero and is still displaced in the same direction when the protractor ring has been rotated 180°, as in Fig. 18, the opticol oxis is displaced and must be adjusted. Fig. 17 Fig. 18 ‘Adjustments are made by unscrewing the metal cover on the collimating lens section, which will expose three adjustment screws, as in Fig. 19. Since there will be movement of the corona target, when the adjustment screws are loosened, loosen the screw (or screws) on the side towards which the target should be moved and tighten the screws (or screw) on the opposite side by the some amount. By alternately loosening and tightening the adjustment screws, the corona image can be correctly centered to the reticule cross-hairs. yesOnce correctly centered, tighten all adjustment screws ond replace the collimating section cover. ‘Adjustment screws 7 4 Fig. 19 Fig, 20 (di If, at zero diopter, the corona image is displaced to the right (or left), when the protractor ring is set to zero, as in Fig. 17, but is displaced to the left (or right), when the protractor ring has been rotated 180°, as in Fig. 20, the reticule cross- hairs cre displaced from the optical axis. Since correction of reticule displacement requires special tools, besides experience ond technical skill, do not attempt this adjustment but send the instrument out for repairs or ship it back to us for adjustment, but only after first writing us your problem in detail (2) Adjustment of the Axis Marker (a) Use an unmounted lens of about $ —4,00DC —0.50D for testing the axis marker. (b) Set the vertex power scale to the stronger power of this lens and place the lens in the lens holder, with the lens rotated so that the corona image is stretched into @ cylindrical tube in the horizontal direction, and the centers of the corona image and reticule cross-hairs coincide. (cl Place three dots on the horizontal center line of the lens with the axis marker, at this point, ond then rotate the lens 180°. After confirming that the centers of the corona image and reticule cross-hairs are properly coincided, mark the axis once more, (d) If the three dots, for both markings, coincide, os in Fig. 21, the axis marker is -12—le) Fig. 21 Fig. 22 properly adjusted. On the other hand, if the two sets of horizontal dots are displaced, as in Fig. 22, the oxis marker must be adjusted. Adjustment is made by shifting the axis marker by one-half of the displacement, or, in other words, by a/2 in Fig. 22. Loosen the adjustment screw in Fig. 13, with a plus-head screwdriver and shift the ‘xis marker slightly, to make the required adjustment. —13s—4. CARE AND MAINTENANCE (1) Exchange of the Lamp The lamp should be inserted into the lamphouse, when the instrument is first received, or exchanged in the following manner: 1) First, switch off electricity and/or disconnect the plug @ from the room recep. tacle. 2) Pull the lamphouse cover (D) forword, os in Fig. 23, and the lamp will be exposed for exchanging 3) Simply unscrew the old lamp ond exchange with the replacement lomp. 4) Push the lamphouse cover back in strongly. w (2) Repair of the Instrument With coreful and correct handling, there should be no troubles with your Lensmeter. However, over an extended period of time and with great use, it is possible that the mechanical ports will eventually wear out. In such cases, do not repoir the instrument yourself or try to take it apart but send it out for repair to a competent optical repair shop or contact us for further advice. In eny cose, never touch the optics, as you may simply get into deeper trouble. If, at times, the vertex power knob ond vertex power scale do not seem to be mov- ing smoothly, there is no need 10 worry because there will be no effect on the accuracy of the measurements. (3) Storage Always turn off the switch and cover the instrument with its vinyl dust cover, when the instrument is not being used for measurements, aAlthough the instrument should not, in principle, be used in a dusty room, protect the instrument with two plastic covers, with drowstrings tightly drawn, 10 prevent entry of dust, if there are no other suitable rooms. And, of course, cover the instrument, as soon as possible, after finishing the session It should be noted that the obrasive effect of dust on the moving parts will wear out the surfaces of the mechanical greatly, surfaces, 5.
