Objective
The learner graphs and solves problem involving circles and other geometric
figures on the coordinate plane.

Lets Recall
A.Fill in each blank to make the statement true.
1. A circle of radius r with its center at the origin can be represented by an
equation of the form ___________________.
2. The equation _____________________ is called the standard form of the
equationof a circle of radius r with center ( h,k ).
3. The equation of the circle with the center at origin and radius of 11 units is
_____________________.
4. In the equation of the circle ( x + 6 )2 + y2 = 25, the center is at________ and
its radius is _________.
5. The general form of the equation of a circle is _________________________.
6. In the equation x2 + y2 – 10x -10y -23 = 0, the center of the circle is ______
and its radius is______.

B. Write an equation in standard form for each circle whose center and radius are
given.
1. C (0,0) and r = 4 4. C (-2,-3) and r = 5
2. C (1,0) and r = 1 5. C (7,8) and r = √6
3. C (0,-7). and r = 3

C.Give the center and the radius of each circle whose equation is given.
1. x2 + y2 = 1 4. ( x + 7 )2 + y2 = 32
2. x2 + y2 = 25 5. x2 + ( y – 8 )2 = 50
3. ( x – 4 )2 + ( y + 2)2 = 36

MATHEMATICS10-QUARTER2-WEEK9

Lets Understand
Draw the graph of each of the circles given the following equations.
1. x2 + y2 = 25
C(0, 0) and r = 5

2. x2 + (y + 4)2 = 16
C(0, -4) and r = 4

3. (x – 3)2 + y2 = 9
C(3, 0) and r = 3

2
MATHEMATICS10-QUARTER2-WEEK9

Write an equation of circle C based on the given information.

1. A circle with center at the origin and passing through (4,0).
Solution: By drawing the graph of the circle, the radius is 4 units. If the center
is at (0,0) and the radius is 4 units, then the equation of the
circle is x2 + y2 = 16

Another solution is find the distance of the center from the point (4,0) which
will be the length of the radius.

C(0,0) and point (4,0)

r = √(4 − 0)2 + (0 − 0)2

r = √42
r = √16
r = 4 units

2. A circle with endpoints of the diameter ( 5 , -3 ) and ( 1, 9 )

Solution: Find the midpoint of the This time find the distance between the
diameter which will be the midpoint and one of the endpoint of the
center of the circle. diameter.This will be the length of the radius.
5+1 −3+9 (3, 3) and (1, 9)
Midpoint ( 2 , 2 )
d = √(1 − 3)2 + (9 − 3)2 d =√40
6 6
Midpoint (2 , 2)
d = √(−2)2 + 62 d = √4 𝑥 10
Midpoint (3,3) d = √4 + 36 d = 2 √10

Given: C ( 3, 3 ) and r = 2 √10 so the equation of the circle is

( x – 3 )2 + ( y – 3 )2 = (2 √10 )2 OR ( x – 3 )2 + ( y – 3 )2 = 4

MATHEMATICS10-QUARTER2-WEEK9

Lets Apply
Write the equation of the circle described by each condition and draw the graph.
1. Center at (2, 5) and tangent to
the y–axis. The length of the
radius is the distance between
the center and (0, 5) which is 2
units.

2. A circle with center at (-4, 4) and

tangent to both x–axis and y–axis.
The center is (-4, 4) and the radius is
4 units

3. A circle with area 36𝜋 cm2 and

center at (2, 5)
