Method Statement
For Hand Applied Patch Repair Using Cementitious Based Material
(Sika MonoTop System)

Product • Sika® MonoTop® -910N

• Sika® MonoTop® -412MY

Description Bonding agent & Corrosion Protection Coating

• Sika® MonoTop® -910N:
A cementitious, polymer modified one-component coating material
containing silica fume used as bonding primer and reinforcement
corrosion protection, complies to EN 1504-7.

Structural Repair mortar

• Sika® MonoTop® -412MY:
A single component, fiber reinforced, low shrinkage structural repair
mortar, complies with the R4 class specifications according to EN
1504-3 that are relevant for tropical countries (up to 50mm thick per
layer).

Tools Required Electric drills (maximum speed 500 rpm) with paddle/stirrer, hacking
equipment, concrete cutter, air compressor, rendering tools, etc.

Preliminary Works 1. Mark out the defective areas to be repaired.

2. Measure the area in m2 (for bonding agent) and in m3 (for
repair mortar).
3. Estimate the required quantity of material for the repair:
Consumption:
• Corrosion Protection ~ 2 coats x 2.0kg/m2
• Bonding coat ~ 1 coats x 1.5kg/m2
• MonoTop -412MY
® 1 bag (25 kg) yields ~ 13.7 litres of
mortar

Surface Preparation Removal of defective concrete

1. Mark out on the site all defective areas to be repaired (as

agreed with the Superintending Officer) and record accordingly
before proceeding with the works.
2. Remove all contaminated defective concrete areas with
appropriate tools and equipment, till sound concrete is reached.
Where this depth corresponds to the depths of concrete cover
and thereby exposes reinforcement, breaking out shall continue
to expose full circumference of the steel and to a further depth
of 15-20 mm. Break out shall continue along the reinforcement
until non-corroded steel is reached or as directed by the
Superintending Officer. Special care shall be exercised to
ensure that any reinforcement exposed is not cut or damaged.
3. Cut out the edges of the repair work to a minimum of 10 mm
depth to eliminate feather edges. The cut shall be
perpendicular to the surrounding concrete face.

This report has been prepared based on Sika’s current knowledge and experience of Sika’s products when properly stored, handled and applied under
normal conditions. It only applies to the application and product referred to in this report. In case of changes in the parameters of the application, such
as changes in substrates etc., or in case of a different application, consult Sika’s Technical Service prior to using Sika’s products. The user of the
product must test the product’s suitability for the intended application and purpose. Consult the current technical data sheet. Except as expressly stated
in writing Sika’s warranty is governed exclusively by our current sales conditions. In particular, Sika does not warrant the correct application of its
products. 6/2003

4. After hacking the defective concrete, remove dust & loose

particles by the most appropriate method (water jet, wire brush,
air compressor etc.).

Reinforcement preparation
1. Clean all exposed reinforcement rust by wire brushing or other
approved means.
Caution:
When the rust has been removed, the diameter of the
reinforcement shall be measured. Should the
reinforcement lose more than 10 % of its original cross
sectional areas, the Superintending Officer must decide on
fixing new reinforcement or otherwise.
2. Remove all dust and debris from the repair area using clean,
oil-free compressed air.
3. If anti-corrosion primer is required, apply Sika® MonoTop® -
910N onto the reinforcement bars.

Material Preparation Reinforcement Protection and Bonding coat

Mechanically mix Sika® MonoTop® -910N in a clean container using
a drill and paddle. Volume of water to add is as follows:
25 kg of Sika® MonoTop® -910N and 5.0 – 5.25 litres of water
Repair mortar (Sika® MonoTop® -412MY)
Mix mechanically Sika® MonoTop® -412MY in a clean drum using a
drill and paddle. Volume of water to add is as follows:

Product Volume of water (litre per 25 kg bag)

Sika® MonoTop® -412MY 3.5 – 4.0

Add the Sika® MonoTop® -412MY slowly while mixing. A minimum

of 3 minutes is recommended to achieve a thorough mixed mortar.
Do not exceed a speed of 500 rpm to minimise air entrapment.
If a small area is to be patched, mix small quantities of Sika®
MonoTop® -412MY at a time to minimise wastage. Care shall be
taken to mix homogeneously the powder and water with the right
water ratio.

Application Soak the prepared substrate thoroughly with clean water to a

surface saturated dry condition.
- If necessary and decided by consultant, apply 2 thin layers of
Sika® MonoTop® -910N as corrosion protection. Inter coating time
depending on the tack-free time of coated areas.
- Apply a thin layer of Sika® MonoTop® -910N as a bonding bridge
with a brush to the surfaces, brushing well the material into the
substrate.
Place the Sika® MonoTop® -412MY whilst the bonding coat is still
“wet”.
Should the bonding coat dry before the application of the
repair/patching material, then a second coat must be applied prior
to placing the subsequent layer of mortar.

Apply the patching mortar with traditional tools (wood float, trowel or
spatula) using rendering technique to fill all voids and pores. When
reinforcement is exposed, ensure the mortar is well filled and
compacted behind the bars. Press hard and force the material
against the edges of the repair, working toward the centre.

Product Maximum Thickness per layer

Sika® MonoTop® -412MY 50 mm

For repairs in excess of recommended thickness, (in vertical

position), apply in layers ensuring previous layers are well keyed
and hardened. If necessary, to apply again the bonding bridge to
ensure full continuity between layers.

Finish the patching with a clean steel trowel, wood float or sponge
(depending on the required finish texture).

Curing Cure Sika® MonoTop® -412MY in accordance with good curing

practice or spray on a curing compound such as Antisol® A or
Antisol® E on the surface immediately after finishing (refer to data
sheet for consumption and application details).

Cleaning Clean all tools and equipment with water immediately after use.
Hardened mortar can only be removed mechanically.

Safety Precaution As cement is alkaline and may cause irritation to certain allergic
people, applicators are recommended to wear gloves while working
with any Sika® MonoTop®. For more information, please consult
our respective Safety Data Sheet (available upon request).

Note This is a general method statement and therefore specific

conditions of use cannot be anticipated. It is the specialist
applicator’s responsibility to review the actual site conditions and
specify detailing requirements.
