Visual Arts Handouts
Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, producing works to be
appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power
• it reflects the complex issues that shape our diverse, global and rapidly changing world.
• It is developed in the year 1960s-present time
Visual Arts: artworks such as painting, photography or sculptures that appeals primarily to the visual
sense and typically exists in permanent form
Performing Arts: a time-based art form that typically features a live presentation to an audience.
a. Dance: It is the art of the human form, body is used, mobilized and choreographed in a
specific time, form and space.
b. Music: It is the art form that combines vocal and instrumental sound to create a
composition.
c. Theater: It is the art form of performance. It is also a collaborative art form which
combines words, voice, movement and visual elements to express meaning.
Literary arts/ Literature: it is the art form of language through the combine use of words, creating
meaning and experience.
I. Architecture: is the art and technique of designing and building, as distinguished from the skills
associated with construction.
Film: A popular form of mass media. It is a technological translation of theater; special effects are utilized
to enhance the story telling.
Appropriation: is the use of pre-existing objects or images in their art with little transformation of the
original.
Performance: Interpreting various human activities such as chores, routines and rituals
Space: art form that is performed and positioned in a specific space. Indoor or outdoor.
Hybridity: mixing two or many elements to form the other. It is also the usage of unconventional
materials to produce artwork.
I. Graphic arts: visual art forms with length and width known as 2D art
II. Plastic arts: visual art forms with length, width and volume known as 3D
I. Fine arts: the artworks we readily associate with art. “fine arts” was first used to describe the art
forms created primarily for their appearance rather than their practical use.
II. Decorative arts: artworks that aesthetically pleasing and functional.
III. Contemporary Art: new and usual art forms that could not be easily categorizes between fine
arts and decorative arts. Art style and techniques that are avant-garde or experimental
• Pop art: an art movement that emerged in the UK and USA during the mid to late 1950s.
It includes imagery from popular and mass culture object, such as advertising, comic
books etc.
• Word art: form of art that include text, forming words or phrases. It is a combination of
language and imagery
• Graffiti: is form of visual communication created in public places.
• Conceptual art: artwork whose medium is an idea or a concept, usually manipulated by
the tools of language and sometimes documented photographs. Its focus is on the
concept of the art instead of the finished art pieces
• Installation Art: a 3D visual artwork, often created for specific place (in situ) and
designed to change the perception of space
• Photorealism: an extremely realistic style of painting and drawing, in which the artwork
is based entirely on photograph.

- The subjects of art works shifted from rural to urban themes. Urban setups became the usual
subjects of visual arts.

Paris Cubism: it is a kind of cubism showing fragmented figures in larger planes, color harmonies and
texture.

SURREALISM: an art and literary movement that utilized fantasy, myth and dream imagery when
creating art.

highlighting their texture and color
GENRE PAINTING: showing the lives of townfolks legends and traditions stayed in the Philippine

environmental awareness.

In order to promote and preserve the rich artistry of the country, National Government through the
NCCA’s Committee on Visual Arts (CVA) launched an education program.
These groups create workshops, art festivals and art exhibitions to encourage young generations to take
part in enriching the country’s visual art.
